Dan used to do all the mixing and mastering himself, but lately he's been able to afford to send his things out for mastering. He chose Tony Lindgren very intentionally. I'm glad you approve! I think the whole thing is just superlative - the most gorgeous, versatile, and powerful voice on the planet, lots of smiles, tons of energy (I thought that Dan was going to pop out of his skin at a few points), fabulous guitar work by Garrett, and not really a cover but a total reimagining while keeping the core of the original. For a lot of people, the shock value reminds me, a little of Dan's "Amazing Grace" or "O Holy Night" etc because the songs are so very surprisingly unexpected as we are shocked at how good they are, even compared to the originals.... sometimes better, sometimes at least as good. Dan has the wonderful ability to do this time after time!

Great question! Mixing is setting the levels and EQing out frequencies during the recording, which this is vital to make sure that there is no peaking or phasing problems which would make a recording basically useless. Mastering is applying effects like reverb, delay further EQ if needed and applying compressors and limiters. There is a lot more that goes into mastering but it is working on the small details that makes a song stand out.
