Regarding the GOG version, like Steam, GOG has frequent weekly & quarterly sales. I picked up Skyrim SE, even the AE DLC/add-on during the last Xmas sale for under $15. So if you don’t have a pressing need right this second, and can hold off a purchase until a sale, you can get it fairly reasonably priced. Without the AE dlc I think it was under $10.
When I heard about the update, I said to myself that I Wouldn't update from 16.4440. but then I found this Armore mod(it required an updating Skyrim to be able to see this armor in the game) So I updated 1.6.1130. Took me many hours and headaches until I finally got my Skyrim to work like It used to be. I'll not update my game anymore for any reason. I learned from my mistakes. From 600+ Mods down to close to 400. My game started much faster also.
so with 1.6.640 there is a mod that gives you the updated files for the new version so you don't have to lose any mods at all would highly recommended going back and getting the mod the name is Backported Extended ESL Support
I switched to the GOG version a month ago and am up to a 106 mods list; I had been running over 300 mods before. I have at least temporarily lost many of my favorite animation mods but am still happy to be free of all the Steam/Bethesda garbage. Most mods will work fine on GOG, you just have to read first.
Small detail I want to mention that I and only a handful of people experienced (which makes me this is an issue exclusive to 1.6.640), setting Steam to only update the game when launched, and then using SKSE no longer works as a bypass. It instead will instantly close the game, and try to update, which I couldn't help but feel that was intentional.
You can find a specific Steam manifest for Skyrim SE, and setting it to read only should let you use the SKSE method. Been using it now for a few weeks without issue
Thank you for being another channel to join us in showing people how to do this! I slapped one together back in December, but yours is definitely more well put together.
I personally just run regular skyrim, not SE or AE. Just Skryim. it's good, and it even has a separate category in Nexus so you don't have to worry about capability. It just works.
Thanks for pointing this out to people, it's been a godsend for me. It may be worth pointing out that the unofficial Skyrim special edition patch is now only available for version 1.6.1130+ on Nexus mods so it could be advisable to install this before you run the downgrade patcher.
This is something I wish more developers would do, It's part of why games like Minecraft have stayed relevant for so long since you can always just go back to an old version to play your favorite adventure map or modpack.
@@MasterBroNetwork There is a LOTR Battle For Middle Earth Launcher that is available and they made it where you can change patches very easily with a click of a button. If Skyrim's Community were make something like that while still requiring a valid copy on steam and all, it would make a big difference especially for mod makers making mods using SKSE.
I'm slightly shocked Bethesda isn't taking over the beyond skyrim project. Do you have any idea how much money they would make if beyond skyrim bruma costed money???
Honestly, if that happened, I would buy it. Sure, I will be giving money to Microshaft for a games I already bought, but to support Skywind, Beyond Skyrim and Skyblivion, it would be worth it.
Unfortunately, Steam and Bethesda now work hand-in-hand to screw you over; setting Steam to Never Update Unless Launched Through Steam DOES NOT WORK. Why? Because, despite ALWAYS launching through MO2, Steam CHANGED my Skyrim settings, right before a Skyrim update, causing the newest update to happen, against both my wishes and my settings. And, as evidenced by multiple comments on my entertainment-news channel, the same has happened to many others. This is Not a joke, Steam is now in bed with Todd Howard to screw you over.
This happened to me too!! Tried to play Skyrim and SKSE told me they didn't match my version of the game. I checked and sure enough, my settings were changed to always keep the game updated. 🤬
I am new to this channel and i gotha say me gusta mucho😍 I also really like how you are "educational" on explaining things and fun at the same time:) i am content that i found this channel and subscribed:)
one thing that helped me sort what caused crashes since i have 600+ mods is sort mods by category and disable them one by one and see what causes crashes or (ctd) i was surprised to know that a compass mod was causing all that fuss as it was secretly conflicting with *less intrusive huds*. everything went back to normal and for some reason even mods that didnt work started working too so i suggest changing load order for skse64 then sort mod by category next 👍🏽
the game crash after the logo after the downgrade. Resolved: I used the mod Backported Extended ESL Support - BEES-1_2. Thanks for the video! While I have no compatibility issues with my mods with AE versions, I chose to downgrade the game for ideological reasons. What they did is sadly very bad! I selected to read only the posters and the app so steam can no longer update it.
Thank you for this. I stopped playing Skyrim for a bit to play games like Baldur's Gate 3 and came back to see Bethesda done fucked everything up again. I was using a massive mod collection too that was rendered basically useless. Probably won't play any Skyrim for a while(got the itch to play Oblivion again lmao), but I will definitely keep this in mind once I get back to it.
While I recommend staying on 1.5.97, I do think it's worth upgrading to 1.6.1130 and then downgrading with the tool, using the "Best of Both Worlds" option. That way you go back to 1.5, but keep the updated ESMs, which newer mods have dependency on and can use updated ESLs, which are actually the one good thing about the recent updates.
I just started Skyrim modding again since 2015 and I was having so many combability issues when I found out the game was still being updated for some reason! Thank you so much for this helpful tutorial
Hopefully Helgari makes another patch, I'd love to learn from this and make a manual backup of Skyrim once and for all. This manifest downloading all seems pretty jank, unsure how stable my Skyrim ended up now.
oh wait. so downgrade from the newest update to the 1.6 update before that THEN go to 1.5.97 go from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.1130, then use the patcher mdo edit: Ok the patcher still isn't working. think I need to wait for it to update? I waited for the files in steam to download
Personally I use a modpack that reverts Skyrim to a specific version of Skyrim for that modpack itself. I love it for that reason as I don't need to worry too much about patches. I absolutely feel the pain though of everyone that has to deal with this.
Thanks, Helpful Moddin' Rabbit. I set my manifest file to read only long ago, Steam lists Skyrim in my library but thinks I have not downloaded it. I enjoy that.
I did this a few days ago too, did the Steam hack and just downgraded back down to SE version 1.5.97. Every mod works on this version, and i never get any issues in comparison to AE which always seems to have issues with loads of mods.
Thank you so much, I finally got my game back to 1.5.97, and got some of my favorite mods to work. It was annoying, and we shouldn’t have to jump through these hoops, but I guess Todd hates us. Anyway thanks a lot. And I love that now they can’t update it for me anymore. That’s the best part.
1 and a half minutes in and i already like this content creator. ya know, there _is_ an ultra secret double-agent way to get Skyrim SE 1.5.97 without having to re-buy the game, use special mods that can cause save game issues or weird steam console commands (which i didnt know you could do until now). but its a hidden in a chest at the bottom of the sea..
Thanks for the video, I'm thinking of getting the game since there is a sale on a keyseller website for 10 dollars and i heard that the mods are where it's at, and i wanted to install any patches and whatnot for a unhindered experience, only problem is the whole system bethesda has with the game updates. so i'll definitely save this video for later. 👍
Also for the GOG version, I think it's only compatible with skse dependent mods for 1.6.640 (because it does have fishing, survival mode etc.), so if you were planning on using mods that weren't updated past 1.5.97 for it you're out of luck.
Haven’t played Skyrim in about 5 years, Nolvus the way to go from the get go? Also can anyone tell me is the steam community is the best place to stay up to date with things going on with the game or is there a good discord server?
Was already doing this when i started watching this video, still gets a like from me :D also- there i was thinking Bethesda couldn't have any more reason to feel shameful after Starfield...
Is there a chance that Bethesda could release updates for the game without causing mods to malfunction, or is it unavoidable? Cause all this work to avoid their updates breaking your mod list is really such a headache.
When the recent updates broke my 500+ modlist all I did was basically just downgrading to the version I've made my modlist for, yeah it's irritating, but not a big problem for anyone familiar with modding
I have the GOG version of Skyrim because I saw the marketplace update coming wayyy before it actually happened. Now I am playing the heavily modded Skyrim AE version before Bethesda's marketplace update. It's going to stay that way forever. I now only play the Steam version in its vanilla state because it is no longer worthy to be modded.
you know, since i first played skyrim in 2012, i wanted to enjoy it again. Yet im so overwhelmed by the amount of effort to just use some moding.... i just want around like 10 mods, but even that brings me to SKSE (that dosnt work), downgrading Skyrim, choosing wich skyrim since there are now 3 versions out there... i miss the times you just could drag drop them in to the mod folder and it would work 😭
It can be hard to start modding. There are some very new user friendly mods out there though. I recomment GamerPoets youtube channel for a good starter guide.
well last time i had to completely rebuild the game like for the 3rd time sigh this time i was covered no problems i thot until i took comp to shop to get some fams and power supply replace and tech tried to open game from steam.....but this seemed to have worked ty his has been saved by you
I actually had my game set to, 'don't update this game until I launch it', Steam updated anyway, it was a major update for skyrim and they changed all the ESM files, so now you also couldn't downgrade either because all the ESM's where broken also, (They still required the ESM to be the same.) so you had to find a patch to fix the ESM's so you could downgrade, I swear Bethesda needs to be giving all these mod authors a salary for fixing all their shit. On top of all that, some mod authors won't leave older versions of their mod so when we downgrade we can get the correct version to go with the downgraded version like Unofficial skyrim special edition patch, (He demands you update,) so you have to go find a version somewhere else who has added it to the web because their being stubborn, then some of the mods that require USSEP don't don't work (older version) but require the latest version...yada, yada, yada, you get the picture. I had been trying to finish Legacy of the dragonborn for so long now, I have no Idea when I even started, having to start over a million times because its a mod that requires a new game, no exceptions. this is an incredibly huge mod, many gigabytes, Its only recently that the ACF was finally added to the community. I think Bethesda is making it increasingly harder and harder to have a downgraded game on purpose, they want you to be current gen so they can tempt you with payed mods. Version 1.5.97 to me has been the best version to play, but now its been harder to maintain a full mod list, Just about ready to call it, modding and playing a game shouldn't require this much frustration!!
great video! been following your stuff on and off for a few years, ever since your oblivion playthrough you started all those years ago. just wanted to ask, what texture mods are you using?
Thank you! :) Noble Skyrim is my base for a lot of the landscapes, along with aMidianborn Book of Silence. I also have some extra little ones thrown in here and there, I listed them all a couple years ago in this video and in the description of it: th-cam.com/video/e_2lWupynY4/w-d-xo.html
Too bad the downgrade patcher hasn't been updated for 1.6.1170 yet.... And the depot method is incomplete; it doesn't cover the translations which need a fourth depot, different for each language. Also, don't use the 1.6.1170 version of gog skyrim yet, we're still waiting for skse on 01/23/2024.
It screwed all my favorite mods for my Xbox. Some of my beloved UI mods, NPCS overhauls, and character customization have all been ruined. I thankfully was able to recreate the load order with a lot less favorable mods but god did they screw me over. I really hope this allows me to even complete the game
The method of changing the steam settings to not update unless you launch it doesn't work anymore. Either Steam or Bethseda has changed that. There was a video a few days ago I watched about that and I checked and sure enough my setting was changed. They change it constantly, no matter how many times you fix it. I think this is really disgusting. What saved my game was having it set to read only. I do agree that the best mod ever is the downgrader patch. I been using it since it came out. Also, best of both will work with all mods. Right now there needs to be another update for it. But yeah, best mod!!
Disclaimer for those who are trying to prevent steam from updating skyrim. If you do not have steam start up when you turn your PC on then you will need to make sure you turn on steam before you start skyrim from the SKSE exe. Otherwise steam will start up and begin updating skyrim while you are playing. literally just happened to me 10 minutes ago. Thanks steam for not also including an option to just prevent updating altogether if the player so chooses.
Going to have to try this when I can, I didn't realize there was an update so when I used the second set without the first I broke the carriage sequence and deleted a whole chunk of ground in front of Solitude. It was so bad even verifying integrity (which forces you to update btw) couldn't fix it, I'll just have to start from scratch
Soo I downgrade it back Ae 1.6.640 and it work the first time but somehow it updated it after a week later.. and I finally downgraded it yesterday, game works but when I load into my saved or start a new game, it just crashes after 7 secs, is there a way to fix it?
I'm just done with Bethseda at this point, I'm not willing to touch anything being presently tampered with or made in the past 14 years by them. Fallout New Vegas or older from now on. It really sucks because I loved enjoying the mods people keep making, and I'll really miss Inigo... but I am so sick of Bethesda. As I'm getting older, collecting more responsibilities, I find myself having less time for bullshit like this.
This a phenomenal solution, atleast until someone gets Skyrim fully playable in a Fork of OpenMW. At the moment Skyrim has base compatability with OpenMW but doesn't have the necessary Middleware to make it fully playable. Give it a couple of years and it won't matter what version you were on.
When you use the steam console you may not need to use the mod to downgrade. Just check the details of exe file for the game in the directory mine was showing as 1.6.640 after and my game worked after this
All that hassle when we could just have an update toggle on steam... it really sucks and even tho a update button would help, probabily the next time you downloaded the game from steam, would be the lattest version, so either use the GOG version or Crack it, i'm cracking my skyrim right now in fact, i don't care if i'm not gonna lose my achievements and hours , i just want some peace of mind
6:18 ok i need to wait for all those to download by the looks of it, because only 1 pops up most of the time Edit: it worked! Got the script extender working now too. going to make the file read-only now had to wait for it to download. my internet's slow for future reference. i get it to 1.6.1130, then use the downgrade patcher to get it to 1.5.97

@@drakonghost6967 honestly I would be surprised if switch had any. Switch can barely run normal skyrim without exploding😂
your not, dumb, your just poor, i'm poor too, but i do have a PC, it's just old as hell by todays standards.
Thanks for pointing this out to people, it's been a godsend for me. It may be worth pointing out that the unofficial Skyrim special edition patch is now only available for version 1.6.1130+ on Nexus mods so it could be advisable to install this before you run the downgrade patcher.
there's an archived version of it

Thanks to you, i can finally enjoy my lover's lab mods again, my hero
This info is a big help. Just wish we had an option to do rollbacks like some games did back in the old days.
Same could be said of Skyblivion and Skywind. Saw a video on Skywind it looked good and they designing with levitation in mind.
Honestly, if that happened, I would buy it. Sure, I will be giving money to Microshaft for a games I already bought, but to support Skywind, Beyond Skyrim and Skyblivion, it would be worth it.
I will never buy a paid mod
Bethesda prefer to not paying them.
Don't give them any ideas!!!
I am new to this channel and i gotha say me gusta mucho😍 I also really like how you are "educational" on explaining things and fun at the same time:)
i am content that i found this channel and subscribed:)
one thing that helped me sort what caused crashes since i have 600+ mods is sort mods by category and disable them one by one and see what causes crashes or (ctd) i was surprised to know that a compass mod was causing all that fuss as it was secretly conflicting with *less intrusive huds*. everything went back to normal and for some reason even mods that didnt work started working too so i suggest changing load order for skse64 then sort mod by category next 👍🏽
the game crash after the logo after the downgrade. Resolved: I used the mod Backported Extended ESL Support - BEES-1_2.
Thanks for the video! While I have no compatibility issues with my mods with AE versions, I chose to downgrade the game for ideological reasons. What they did is sadly very bad!
I selected to read only the posters and the app so steam can no longer update it.
life saver
Thank you for this. I stopped playing Skyrim for a bit to play games like Baldur's Gate 3 and came back to see Bethesda done fucked everything up again. I was using a massive mod collection too that was rendered basically useless. Probably won't play any Skyrim for a while(got the itch to play Oblivion again lmao), but I will definitely keep this in mind once I get back to it.
your speech alone at the start of the video made me suscribe. amazing content xdd
This work has reserved for you a place of great honor in Sovngarde 👑
While I recommend staying on 1.5.97, I do think it's worth upgrading to 1.6.1130 and then downgrading with the tool, using the "Best of Both Worlds" option.
That way you go back to 1.5, but keep the updated ESMs, which newer mods have dependency on and can use updated ESLs, which are actually the one good thing about the recent updates.
Very late to the party, I recently started Skyrim. Was boggled by some mod issues. Thanks for this vid!
nice to see so many comments, keep it up Kou
I just started Skyrim modding again since 2015 and I was having so many combability issues when I found out the game was still being updated for some reason! Thank you so much for this helpful tutorial
Hopefully Helgari makes another patch, I'd love to learn from this and make a manual backup of Skyrim once and for all. This manifest downloading all seems pretty jank, unsure how stable my Skyrim ended up now.
My idiotic little brother started clicking random stuff on steam and launched skyrim. I'm making sure he never touches my PC again!
I'm subbing and never unsubbing because of the first minute and twenty seconds of this video.
Thank you I really approve your help and time you took to make this 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thanks for the help, this was a very clear easy to follow video. Great job!
oh wait. so downgrade from the newest update to the 1.6 update before that
THEN go to 1.5.97
go from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.1130, then use the patcher mdo
edit: Ok the patcher still isn't working. think I need to wait for it to update?
I waited for the files in steam to download
Personally I use a modpack that reverts Skyrim to a specific version of Skyrim for that modpack itself. I love it for that reason as I don't need to worry too much about patches. I absolutely feel the pain though of everyone that has to deal with this.
Thanks, Helpful Moddin' Rabbit. I set my manifest file to read only long ago, Steam lists Skyrim in my library but thinks I have not downloaded it. I enjoy that.
And thank you for your support as always!
Thanks for the Skyrim mod video Koubitz 😊😊
Don’t forget Backported Extended ESL Support for versions before 1.6.1130!
1 and a half minutes in and i already like this content creator.
ya know, there _is_ an ultra secret double-agent way to get Skyrim SE 1.5.97 without having to re-buy the game, use special mods that can cause save game issues or weird steam console commands (which i didnt know you could do until now). but its a hidden in a chest at the bottom of the sea..
such a solid guide. making a complex task to people like me who aren't familiar with all the tech stuff and making it easy to follow. thanks :)
i could not find the appmanifest mentioned in the video tho
Thanks for the video, I'm thinking of getting the game since there is a sale on a keyseller website for 10 dollars and i heard that the mods are where it's at, and i wanted to install any patches and whatnot for a unhindered experience, only problem is the whole system bethesda has with the game updates. so i'll definitely save this video for later. 👍
thank you, i have been waiting for this
Also for the GOG version, I think it's only compatible with skse dependent mods for 1.6.640 (because it does have fishing, survival mode etc.), so if you were planning on using mods that weren't updated past 1.5.97 for it you're out of luck.
I wouldnt be so sure that rupert isnt the best mod...
Blows my mind that a ton of people apparently didn’t know to just fucking disable Skyrim updates in Steam to avoid their mods breaking.
they didn't notice or ignore the news when the upcoming 1.60 release that day😂😂,
I wish Bethesda could update their games in a much more less-aggressive way than current's. Great video!
In some ways, the downgrade patcher is a combat mod. You're fighting the greed and incompetency of Bandithesda, and their overlords M$.
Maaaaaan at this point the best, most effective and also easiest way to save your mod list in Skyrim is to pirate the game.........
Ah, super helpful. I overlooked something so obvious. Thank you!
Haven’t played Skyrim in about 5 years, Nolvus the way to go from the get go? Also can anyone tell me is the steam community is the best place to stay up to date with things going on with the game or is there a good discord server?
For anyone to lazy to type cant copy and paste, still copy each code by itself go back to the steam thing click the typying area and hit ctrl V
Was already doing this when i started watching this video, still gets a like from me :D
also- there i was thinking Bethesda couldn't have any more reason to feel shameful after Starfield...
I have seen people commenting that even if you disable the auto updates on steam
The option is being turned back on somehow…
ty so much this fixed all my problems
Is there a chance that Bethesda could release updates for the game without causing mods to malfunction, or is it unavoidable? Cause all this work to avoid their updates breaking your mod list is really such a headache.
When the recent updates broke my 500+ modlist all I did was basically just downgrading to the version I've made my modlist for, yeah it's irritating, but not a big problem for anyone familiar with modding
This notification made me smile :)
Guess what. You can not stop auto Updates. Steam got rid of that, the lowest setting is update on launch.
What's the difference between downgrading from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.1130 and 1.6.640 if using the patcher eventually leads both versions to 1.5.97? Thanks!
Version 1.5.97 to me has been the best version to play, but now its been harder to maintain a full mod list, Just about ready to call it, modding and playing a game shouldn't require this much frustration!!
the constant updates keep me from coming back to modding just gonna go back to oldrim
1.5.97 forever. I have disconnected my Wifi every time before launch Skyrim and every one should do so. 🎉
I always keep a backup copy of my Skyrim game folder just in case.
Only real fix is playing the 2011 version, which I own and you can download the 3 DLCs free.
great video! been following your stuff on and off for a few years, ever since your oblivion playthrough you started all those years ago.
just wanted to ask, what texture mods are you using?
I really hope this allows me to even complete the game
this came in so much clutch
The method of changing the steam settings to not update unless you launch it doesn't work anymore. Either Steam or Bethseda has changed that. There was a video a few days ago I watched about that and I checked and sure enough my setting was changed. They change it constantly, no matter how many times you fix it. I think this is really disgusting. What saved my game was having it set to read only. I do agree that the best mod ever is the downgrader patch. I been using it since it came out. Also, best of both will work with all mods. Right now there needs to be another update for it. But yeah, best mod!!
Would Depot Downloader work to avoid updating the game too?
Disclaimer for those who are trying to prevent steam from updating skyrim. If you do not have steam start up when you turn your PC on then you will need to make sure you turn on steam before you start skyrim from the SKSE exe. Otherwise steam will start up and begin updating skyrim while you are playing. literally just happened to me 10 minutes ago. Thanks steam for not also including an option to just prevent updating altogether if the player so chooses.
That mod is indeed the best. I probably wouldn't play the game were it not for that mod...
I found the best way to avoid Todd's shenanigans was to simply get a key for LE
Going to have to try this when I can, I didn't realize there was an update so when I used the second set without the first I broke the carriage sequence and deleted a whole chunk of ground in front of Solitude. It was so bad even verifying integrity (which forces you to update btw) couldn't fix it, I'll just have to start from scratch
the game does not work at all after the latest "update" fail they did.
cant make a new character, black screen. cant load my old save. black screen.
Imagine making a game that people go out of their way to avoid getting the updates.
whats crazy is they reset users update preferences so it went from never to always update and it happned through skse as well
I've just been staying on 1.5, downgraded so I could play Sirenroot and The Cause.
Soo I downgrade it back Ae 1.6.640 and it work the first time but somehow it updated it after a week later.. and I finally downgraded it yesterday, game works but when I load into my saved or start a new game, it just crashes after 7 secs, is there a way to fix it?
in surprised that they put skyrim on gog.
I loved that intro lol
Thank you very much for the help! yay
The Sarcasm at the beginning is dripping so hard 🤣
Disabling steam updates doesn’t work and isn’t safe. Steam can and will force update you. Have to make your app manifest read only.
or just turn off the WiFi everytime we play Skyrim
Thank you for the video.
VERY helpful.
Peaceful Skies.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
When you use the steam console you may not need to use the mod to downgrade. Just check the details of exe file for the game in the directory mine was showing as 1.6.640 after and my game worked after this
Those poor Bethesda guys.. we should open a fundraiser for them
So I'm just going have to wait till the few mods I had that got broken get updated, well I've waited before, I can wait again.
I have this spinning wheel of doom while playing skyrim that makes me unable to save, like i literally can't press save. I think its due to my mods
All that hassle when we could just have an update toggle on steam...
it really sucks and even tho a update button would help, probabily the next time you downloaded the game from steam,
would be the lattest version, so either use the GOG version or Crack it, i'm cracking my skyrim right now in fact, i don't care
if i'm not gonna lose my achievements and hours , i just want some peace of mind
6:18 ok i need to wait for all those to download by the looks of it, because only 1 pops up most of the time
Edit: it worked!
Got the script extender working now too. going to make the file read-only now
had to wait for it to download. my internet's slow
for future reference. i get it to 1.6.1130, then use the downgrade patcher to get it to 1.5.97
