    Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are back! They raised over $120k to go on tour, make a new album and finish their movie. I was hoping to see them open for King Crimson someday.

    If this isn't a complement I don't know what is.

    When a musician of his stature says "I can't do what these dudes are doing", you know you're in for a treat... Been a big fan of KC and SGM for most of my life now, but up till today I had no idea Tony was in on it. And honestly I'm glad he is. It's some of the freshest, most groundbreaking stuff out there alongside his own music and it's a pleasure to see they're borrowing from one another to push the artform.

    WOW! What a compliment to my friends Sleepytime! I was lucky enough to open for them back in 2002! Thanks Tony!

    Wow! I've never seen this and am floored. I had the pleasure of chatting with Dan Rathbun after a Free Salamander Exhibit show in Memphis and he mentioned Tony in our discussion. This is so awesome and I'm sure Dan is proud. He's such an amazing bassist and counterpart to all of the antics that he and nils have made over the decades.

    Hey Tony. Sleepytime back together and on tour. I saw them in Seattle on the 3rd. Great as always. The crowd was so excited to see them again. Hope you catch them on this tour.

    SGM is, indeed,unique, to say the least. It is true that we want to absorb that which are drawn to, artistically. Thanks, Tony!

    If you're not already familiar and enjoy the sounds of this track, I'd urge you to also look into their previous work as Idiot Flesh and later work as Free Salamander Exhibit. Dan, Carla and nils also contributed to Charming Hostesses album Eat, which is wonderful.

    I wholeheartedly agree with Tony’s assessment when it comes to their sudden tempo shifts. I’d previously heard fusion bands like the Wayne Krantz trio do such things but SGM does it in a way that’s simultaneously shocking, satisfying and completely organic, to borrow a word from Tony. The other thing that I’ve always loved about them is their production value. Lots of smaller bands rely on “lofi this” and “garage that” (there’s nothing wrong with that) but SGM has always had *prestine* production on their records. You can tell that they all have really good ears.

    Really cool video. I felt the same way the first time I discovered SGM, being a long time King Crimson listener.

    SGM take cues from Dadaism, Einstürzende Neubauten and things that piss in the face of musical virtuosity. But because most of them are classically trained, you can hear a band that learned the same rules they masterfully destroy, to leave someone like Tony very inspired.
    Saw em live and it was glorious! Idiot Flesh is great pre SGM band with a few core members to check out. And consider some of it predates Mr. Bungle's first commercial release!

    I hope he's aware that the band is still existing in some form or another now as Free Salamander Exhibit, it just unfortunately doesn't have Carla or Mathias. Still great band though, Carla and Mathias have been doing their own thing as Rabbit Rabbit Radio and Mathias has been composing video game soundtracks like the one for Binding of Isaac.

    The definition of progress is that SGM has gone light years beyond KC. Levin's sad attempt to cover them is proof. Which is not to dis KC. Nothing like them round about the third album (Lizard) when I saw them live at the Eastown in Detroit, what , like 1971-72? There might not be a SGM if not for KC.

    What's the song at 1:40

    • @GKViddingHD
      @GKViddingHD 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Could be some alternated part in the middle of Sleep is Wrong where she sings "when I grow up..." though I am not sure. Could also be something unreleased. SGM performed those, too.

      It's definitely a modified version of Sleep is Wrong like @paraprog85 said. Over the years, they modified their songs for live performance. IIRC, Sleep is Wrong is the one they modified the most. It became more epic over the years...which is saying a lot.
