I was in Matagami back in 1982 - We went there for a project for my college but also had a girlfriend who had relatives there so we went for new year's eve. The trip to Matagami is incomplete if you didn't stop at the 69 - that's the stop between Amos and Matagami...69 miles is half way to Matagami...there, you could refuel, get a haircut, a bar and even a few strippers if needed.. This place was complete service let's say. In matagami, there was the Hotel Bell, the motel electric and a bar with 2 floors, street level was just a normal bar but downstairs was a strip joint. We had fun in matagami with the family and people there. it was quite a trip. Remember seeing at the entrance a village of indians who built shelters out of scrap material - this village was huge and the cop told us that by the end of the week, it would be bulldozed... god knows what happened to the people living in these quarters... Don't remember. Was a tough place to be back then, people didn't get into trouble, especially at the bar in the hotel bell... mostly natives drinking and fighting there... the bar room was made with chairs bolted to the floor and the bar was just an opening in the wall with a plywood that would shut when there were fights. That was my version of the "Far West" in Quebec. This trip was unique. Loved it.

I plan a visit to James Bay next summer, it appears Matagami is one of few spots to stop along the way, in my case half way from Montreal. Were you on the way to James Bay? Was the motel where you stayed a nice one? How is the view when driving?

The motel pictured here, the first in the right as you enter town, was reasonable and clean. Like you, it served as the midpoint on my trip from Sudbury to Radisson.

Oh, and the view in several places along the James Bay Highway was remarkable.

Thanks for your reply. The farthest point north in Ontario for me was Geraldton many years ago, by bus. Life seems so laid back up there, now I want to see what life is like near James Bay, this time by car for more freedom. The hydro electric installations as well the sheer size of them is what draws me most for this trip.
