The Quran mentions the incident of Joseph and Zulekha. In Quran 12:53, Joseph says, '‘I do not think my Lower Self is exempt from sin, because verily, the Nafs e Ammarah (Commanding Self) compels one to do bad'. So in the light of the Quran, it is not just important for ordinary human beings to purify the Lower Self. Even the Lower Selves of all the prophets and saints were impure when they were born into this world.
'Devout Believers are those whose Spiritual Hearts have been granted the contentment by God. Beware! The contentment of the heart lies in commemoration of God'. Quran 13:28
In the light of the Quran, there are four sub-spirits of the Lower Self: Nafs e Ammarah (The Commanding Self, Quran 12:53), Nafs e Lawamma (The Blameworthy Self, Quran 75:2), Nafs e Mulhima (The Inspired Self, Quran 91:8), Nafs e Mutmaina (The Contented Self, Quran 89:27).

In Quran 4:103, God says in reference to the future, 'When your Salat becomes invalid, learn the commemoration which can be done while you stand, sit and toss and turn in your beds.’
In Episode 9 of Qur'an e Maknoon, Sufi Master Younus AlGohar goes over crucial verses of Surah Al-A'raf in which God reveals how the Devil misguides people, how he deceived Adam and Eve, and how he hurdles in the way of those on Sirat e Mustaqeem (Sirat al Mustaqeem).
'In order to adopt Islam, whoever has obtained Shahr-e-Sadr (Opening of the Breast) with the name of God is a Devout Believer. And that person shall begin to receive divine energy from his Lord. Woe and destruction upon those whose hearts are so hard that they do not absorb the name of God, for this is sheer misguidance'. Quran 39:22
The Opening of the Breast refers to the awakening of the inner faculties in the breast. It is not a simple thing. According to the Quran 20:25, Moses prayed to God to grant it to him.
This verse of the Quran goes on to state, ‘and through Zikar-e-Qalb (Heart Activation), when there is contentment in your Spiritual Heart, then you may establish Salat.’
