As a proud Tasmanian and 20 years+ love affair with Pinot, I can also say Tolpuddle is one of the very best we have! I would also add Pooley's (2023 Best Winery of the Year in Australia from James Halliday) and Bay of Fires to the list, so many cracking wines from South Australia and Victoria, we are spoiled for choice! Great channel mate, subbed.
After visiting 2 years ago on holiday Tasmania is one of my favorite regions for Pinot Noir though it’s hard to find many of the producers in the US. My go-to bottle is Holm Oak Pinot Noir 2019 at $36. Love it!
So happy to see Hyland Estates in your video! I previously worked with them for years (Hospitality & Cellar) and their wines are a real hidden gem in Oregon. I travel around Europe with them as the wines and their quality are truly worth seeking out! Happy to Hyland making an impression that they deserve!!
Very happy you preferred the Tasmanian Pinot Noir. So many truly great Pinot Noirs are produced in Tasmania. The Tolpuddle is a high quality Pinot Noir.
I think that these wines are rather difficult to come by in some international markets. You would probably have to go to specialist importers to find these wines, so while I've read about them, I haven't tasted them yet. It is surprising that Oregon PNs are sometimes more full bodied that Santa Barbara or other cooler areas of California. Tasmanian PN is supposed to be great, but it seems that they need to increase planting and also work on their geographical indication before they reach a larger target audience. As at the moment Tasmanian wines in general are very much a niche product, IMHO. Nice video and good insight into two important & emerging PN regions. Cheer!
Have had some Pinot noir from Oregon, just down the road from us, ok a little further than that but close enough. They tend to get pretty expensive by the time all the government taxes are added on here, but I love that they are a little more concentrated. A very good Pinot noir is hard to beat. I will look for the Pinot noir from Tasmania. Great tasting! Currently enjoying the Diora La Petite Grace Pinot noir Monterey 2020. Very nice Pinot noir at a great price.
Great stuff! Thank you! I love Pinot and have been exploring emerging regions. I’ve noticed both Central Otago and Tasmania are quite smokey and almost reductive on the nose. Is this your experience?
Hey Dr. Horkey, i was wondering in your opinion what is the the best wine you ever had the grape type and name brand and what is the most worst Grape type and Wine Name Brand you ever had and you will never drink or touch ever again?
Awesome content, once again! I know this would be nearly impossible, but could you please do the video for the budget pinor noir? price range would be 50~100 bucks 🤔 Thank you so much for the great insight!
Thanks Matthew, Great tasting! I agree, cool climate Australia really is making some fantastic pinot noir. I recently tasted Farrside by Farr 2020 from Geelong... pure Pinot Noir character with a real sense of identity, not overtly Burgundian in style but also not needing to be. Excellent.
Nice video Matthew. Tolpuddle is a top producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. I think you need to work on your pronunciation game in relation to Australia too - especially Geelong, Yarra Valley and Macedon Ranges. 😆
I have tasted several Oregon Pinot Noirs. Some of them have been really good. Also few Australian Pinot Noirs. But never anyone from Tasmania yet. I will look for some and try.
I’m from the willaaamet valley, and love our wines. Recently we opened a bottle of Jansz, sparkling wine from Tasmania, all Pinot I believe, super delicious super value. If you’re ever in the area let me know, I’ll cook you a good dinner, and open some great wine.
In order of preference for Pinot Noir all things being equal: 1. Tasmania 2. Sancerre 3. Willamette (dammit ;) ) 4. Burgundy (Bourgogne/Village) 5. Anderson Valley 6. New Zealand 7. Monterey Now, if you're throwing in 1er/Grand Cru Burgundy then it's probably going to be #1
The Tolpuddle is fairly uncommon even in Australia and it’s over AU$100.! I believe that Michael Hill Smith is the Smith from Shaw & Smith ,another Australian wine brand you’re fond of, so I’m not surprised you enjoyed the Tolpuddle
I find the Tolpuddle wines a little overhyped. I prefer Bream Creek Pinot Noir and my first tasting was 25+ years ago where it had already been aged 5 years. Truly memorable!
How would you compare it to germanys top Spätburgunder producers? Both wines are about 60 Euros in europe. For 60 bucks you can get a bunch of highend pinots from germany.
I tend to agree with that. Pinots from these regions are very good but I tend to find too that the prices for these wines are too high compared to what you can buy domestically.

Bay of Fires can be excellent too!

That is a solid wine! Lucky you, I gotta make it down there

They are very good and under the radar!
Wow! Not a bad choice for Tassie Pinot Noir! Many in Australia consider Tolpuddle the benchmark for Tasmanian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay!
For good reason!
Tolpuddle has slowly become one of the most collected wines down under ; beautiful pinot noir and Chardonnay
For good reason!
When I visited Willamette I saw the Swiss clone all over the place. And that Tolpuddle?!??! I reviewed the 2016 3 years ago. Really nice wine.
So cool!
Very happy you preferred the Tasmanian Pinot Noir. So many truly great Pinot Noirs are produced in Tasmania. The Tolpuddle is a high quality Pinot Noir.
High quality stuff indeed! I gotta make it down there in the future.

Thank you! Yes Tasmania is the region in Australia where demand outstrips supply in terms of wine grapes
Red Burgundy was my first true wine love, little did I know how unaffordable it would get.
🤣🤣😂😅
No doubt.. Oregon has some spectacular Pinots ! And we have Papa Pinot to thank for being such a pioneer !
There are plenty of fantastic options to choose from there

Ohhh Monterey County does some stellar Pinot!
Great stuff! Thank you! I love Pinot and have been exploring emerging regions. I’ve noticed both Central Otago and Tasmania are quite smokey and almost reductive on the nose. Is this your experience?
I do find Oceanic Pinots are often reductive but it does add a subtle hint of complexity.
Yes. I appreciate the character difference but did not know it was related to oceanic geography. Thank you!@@drmatthewhorkey
I think it’s more winemaking choices…
Hey Dr. Horkey, i was wondering in your opinion what is the the best wine you ever had the grape type and name brand and what is the most worst Grape type and Wine Name Brand you ever had and you will never drink or touch ever again?
I mention on the channel often I love Sangiovese and Riesling!
@@drmatthewhorkey oh ok

There is one on the channel already :)
Just had the Antica Terra ‘Coriolis’ which rocked my world, the Tolpuddle is on my to-do list!!
You'll love it!
Excellent.
Ohhhhhh I love that wine!
I love the Sangreal as well
Beautiful wines, the Highland estate I’ve had several times never disappoints. Great face off any future plans to do another underrated overrated?
Not at the moment! Possibly in the future

Yeearrrr Ahhhh
Have you tried Dundee Hills Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir 2019 or 2016? It's really good
I've had a few vintages, beautiful wine
I have tasted several Oregon Pinot Noirs. Some of them have been really good. Also few Australian Pinot Noirs. But never anyone from Tasmania yet. I will look for some and try.
Good luck and happy hunting!
Funny story, it was my first step into the wine world. It was the food pairing that really sucked me in.
a good reason to get sucked in!

Jansz is a classic down there!
Was told willamette should rhyme with dammit
Tasmanian Stefano Lubiana Pinot Noirs are my current favourite Australian PN. $30 to $50 US dollars.
🙏😮
Great tasting of my favourite grape .
Thanks a lot

Yes they are both his projects. I def finished the Tolpuddle after the video hahaha
I find the Tolpuddle wines a little overhyped. I prefer Bream Creek Pinot Noir and my first tasting was 25+ years ago where it had already been aged 5 years. Truly memorable!
Ohhhhh wowzass!

I love Rudolf Furst's Pinot Noir. German Spatburgunders are getting pricey too (although there are great values to be had too)
At least he's not laughing his ass off like mr wineking that's a plus+.
Yes, He still laughs a lot though, I wonder if they are both laughing at us Occidentals?
funny enough I like it when Jae laughs.
Dawson James is a great Tassie producer and half the price of Tolpuddle
Very good winery!!!

👌👌
NZ and Germany are closest
Both countries do great stuff!
since Pinot, Bordeaux and other super popular stuff get more eyes, I am not going to engage with it… sorry Mathew, I dont make the rules😅
No probs!
