The navy medic at the end of the film was a real US Navy medic, Danielle Albert. It took two takes. The director told her to just treat him like a normal patient and the scene was mostly improvised. She froze star-struck during the first take, and Hanks joked with her that he was supposed to be the one in shock. The second take was the one used. The Captain of the ship was standing next to the director during the filming of it, and had tears in his eyes, stating, "I've seen trauma and that's what it looks like."
@frogofbrass382 Literally one of the best scenes, and best performances, I have ever seen. Tom Hanks is (obviously) fantastic in it, and I think it is his best performance in a single scene, but it's also up there on best performances in any scene, of any movie, by any actor. And the inclusion of a very real US Navy Medic, Danielle Albert as you say, in the scene, with the stark contrast of her completely compassionate but also calm and professional "treatment" of Hanks' character, makes for a bewildering combination that even elevates and enhances Hanks' performance. I'm just amazed that such a scene could ever be created.
Great choice. Really wish we had more reactions to this on TH-cam. Nominated for several Oscars and was directed by Paul Greengrass who found great success with United 93.
Well, now that one of the reactors has watched it, it won't take long before the others will watch it too, since that's the way it pretty much always seems to go with every movie. I'd like to know why that is. Just one example is how one of the reactors watched a classic, but totally unknown to these young folks, film from 1957, is in B&W, takes place in one room, and consists solely of people talking. But after one of them watched it, all of a sudden over a dozen of the others had watched 12 Angry Men within weeks. I've noticed this pattern repeatedly. It makes me wonder why. Cheers!
The first time I watched this movie I didn't think too much of it until we got to the end scene with the medic and Tom Hanks' amazing acting as he realizes he is finally safe. Some of the best acting I've ever seen in my life, I was mesmerized.
Thanks to Stephanie for the request! This is a great movie and Tom Hanks never disappoints. Your son has a good head on his shoulders and I have no doubt that is due to you James!
Tom Hanks is absolutely uncanny. He has an instantly recognizable voice, and you can hear his same inflections in every single role he takes, so by all logic you would think that would be distracting.... but it isn't. The man completely disappears into every single role he does, to the point where you almost forget you're even looking at Tom Hanks during the film, as he becomes exactly who you are seeing, without any absurd method acting required. The man is a total legend.
From what I understand when the pirates first burst into the room, that scene had not been rehearsed. First time Tom met the actors playing the pirates. The Somalian actors were brand new to acting.--- Sully.} Tom Hanks a must see.
The scene in the sickbay is one of my favourite scenes in cinema. It was powerful. The fact that Hanks acted opposite a real navy corpsman is just the cherry on top.
