I was a member of an Old Time music group a few years ago and I was leaning to play claw hammer banjo. I really enjoyed it, but the group dismantled after awhile and I eventually sold the banjo . This makes me want to pick it up again! The "Bum Ditty" and the Cluck are a little tough to master, but I love that sound. You've really got it down!!
Sorry to bother you again, but I'm thinking about buying another Open Back Banjo and just wondered what brand banjo you're playing. It sounds great! I've got an old banjo made in the 1970's that sounds ok... It's a cheap Japanese brand with a wooden resonator I can remove, making it kind of an open back, just doesn't have the cluck and ring of a true Open Back Banjo. Thanks for your videos!!
@@ambu6478 The banjo I’m playing here is a Mike Ramsey Maple Special 12 inch pot with a rolled brass tone ring. Unfortunately Mike passed away a while back thus ending production of his great line of banjos. I’m lucky enough to have two of his banjos. A Ramsey Bacon 11” pot and this 12 inch Maple Special . Mike was a special person with a special knack for making banjos . You can still find one for sale every once in a while if you search around a bit. There are some really good open back banjo makers out there these days though. Check some of them out. My best to you , Johnny
Absolutely lovely. You play and sing with such sweet melancholy, it's truly beautiful. By far my favourite version of this tune and I can't wait to learn. Thanks so much for sharing

Aaron Sure thing. It’s double C tuning capoed at the 4th fret . I have railroad spikes at the 7th and 9th fret for the fifth string. The 5th string is under the 9th fret spike for this tuning.

Yes sir there are several good videos right here on you tube that you can glean stuff from . Just search "Drop Thumb Clawhammer Banjo" and a ton of stuff will pop right up. That being said several years back I first learned drop thumb from a Lynn Morris video from the "Murphy Method" Video Tape (VCR) series on Clawhammer Banjo . Have to google them and see if they offer it a DVD now.
@@marydegnan9729 Hey Mary, you can play in double C and not worry about having to capo up four frets. You can also capo in the 2nd fret and tune your 5th string up one step to A. I tune to double C and capo at the fourth fret to be in the key of E because that’s where it’s easier for me to sing this tune at. I sure hope this helps.
