I agree with all these for sure but I also wanna say that Yharnam(while being a place I would never ever wanna go to)is an absolutely amazing setting that never fails to makes me feel completely engrossed in it. It's certainly the virtual world that most makes me feel like I'm actaully there and that I'm in a ton of danger every second I stick around.

Love the Bioshock Infinite appreciation here, that world was incredible, so much fun to explore

    • @sulidos
      @sulidos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

OCYT I've played Bioshock 1&2 a ton of times and infinite once but never the DLC for it.
In fact it completely slipped my mind that the DLC showed rapture before the fall. Imma eliminate this gross oversight on my part asap and play the gd DLC. Back to Rapture!!

    • @Uppernorwood976
      @Uppernorwood976 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

sulidos IMO burial at sea is the perfect example of to do DLC properly. Came out at a similar time to last of us left behind, which is also great.
Both are not necessary to have a complete experience with the base game, but both feel like a worthwhile addition to the story.

I loved your picks Colin, but I have a few I would add:
    1) I would say the Norse mythology within God of War was an amazing setting, whether you were in Midgard, Alfheim, Helheim, Muspelheim, Niflheim or Jotunheim, they were diverse, just beautiful and I can’t wait to see Svartalfheim, Vanaheim and Asgard.
    2) Gotham City in Arkham Knight was done in a sinister, dark way that made Gotham City feel real.
    3) Mafia 2 had an amazing setting that truly made me feel like I was in the 40-50’s of New York.
    4) Shoutout to Spira in FFX. I have yet to play FFXII, I heard that Ivalice is amazing as well, but I loved Spira because it was so different. One group condemns machina, while others embrace some/most of it. It made the areas quite different from each other and made the adventure even more memorable.
    5) Quick shoutouts to Yharnam (Bloodborne) Silent Hill and Kamurocho (Yakuza) for nailing the setting and atmosphere so good!

These top 5s & 10s might be a cliché, but they're very fun to watch. And I hope you find them fun to produce.

Colin thank you for all the time and passion these high quality videos take. I would agree on Bioshock and Rapture as one of my favorite worlds, I would also add Fallout (any) the wasteland itself, Half Life and Half Life 2, The Elder Scrolls games from Dagger fall to Skyrim, and Racoon City of early RE games.

I quite like the setting of I Am Setsuna. There’s something about the eternal snowy landscape that fits so well with the story and music.
Alsio, honorable mentions to Yharnam from Bloodborne, and the Skellege Isles in the Witcher 3.

10:10 A minor correction: there *was* a survival horror game on the SNES: _Clock Tower._ Unfortunately it was a very late SNES title released in 1995 (only a year before Resident Evil), and therefore was never released outside of Japan.

S.D. Perry's RE novels really dig into the mythology. He did a good job in expanding the universe, stories, and characters. Other worlds that I think deserve a mention are Shadow of the Colossus and Breath of Wild.

I loved The Last of Us but my only petty gripe was when you have to run from building to building while a sniper was shooting at you from the furthest building. If you look closely when you are below the sniper you can see that it's just the gun and there isn't a human there. It's just a sniper turret.

    @NismoR034 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Since everyone else is listing their favourites as well, I'll also jump in with a couple.
Metroid, specifically Prime 1 & 2 but the whole series is good at it. I choose the Prime games though because there is so much nuance and depth to Tallon IV and Aether that is very easy to overlook, but there if you choose to look for it. Tallon IV in particular is also one of the few game locations that I felt truly 'nailed' what an alien world/planet should feel like, as well (Mass Effect trilogy achieves this as well but in a different way). I admit to some bias as Metroid Prime is my favourite game of all time, however the reason it is that is because of things like the incredible detail and atmosphere found within. One of the few games where I actually felt like I was 'there', even though I obviously wasn't. :)
My other selection is one I'm surprised no one else has mentioned yet: Minecraft. Given how 'simple' that game can be, it's ridiculous how well it can give you a sense of place and make it feel like your own. It has atmosphere stronger than a lot of current triple-A games do, somehow, yet you wouldn't know it upon first glance. Coming out of a cave out of a mountain only to find a sunset over the hills in the distance still gets to me now as much as it did back in 2009 when I first began playing. Perhaps the best way to describe what I mean here is to say that Minecraft understands that, sometimes, less is more.

Loved the original Dead Space and how the USG Ishimura establishes its own set of “rules” only to break them and make the player feel that much more uncomfortable later on. I’ll never forget being ambushed by a necromorph while upgrading my weapons under the false guise of safety in the weapon bench menu screen. RIP Visceral

  • @the_grimby1722

I've got a few! Some curve balls, but mostly memorable. I'm a huge PC/ fantasy dork.
Nirn (Elder Scrolls!) has to be one of my favorites. It's like the only game that I turn into an apothecary and wander aimlessly harvesting herbs instead of paying attention to the main quest. I think Morrowind was my favorite (game, and world).
Rapture was a great call, totally immersive world. I'm not a huge Infinite fan, but i'd agree that Colombia was pretty damn well made as well.
Skies of Arcadia was a fantastic world that I loved exploring. Still waiting for SoA 2!
Azeroth (Warcraft). It's pretty much a given for someone who started out playing Warcraft 2 ages ago and loved WoW for years as well. Great world, well developer, and a lot of personality to it!
Thedas. (Dragon Age) Just a well developed world with a lot of depth to it. When you can actually remember a lot of the lands within the greater world...they probably have done a good job developing the story and the world around it.
Norrath (Everquest). Yeah...another fantasy MMO that I spent a lot of damned time in.
Halo world. Just the ring worlds and the way it all fit together. Maybe not the best ever, but definitely memorable for me.
Mass Effect was a great call. It's just incredibly well developed. It feels like they could flesh out several more games if they wanted to with just the original trilogy.
Dunwall (Dishonored). Was just fantastically drawn together. Just a lot of interest in the world and how you interact with it. They really nailed the dank/dirty london vibes.
Honorable mentions. Gears of War world. Overlord world (always thought it was a really solid fantasy world). I want to say Starcraft world because i'm a huge blizzard fan. Also, whatever world Viva Pinata resides in just seems lovely.

All of the Soulsborne games have great settings. Demon’s Souls, even more so than the other games, just had this really unique vibe to it when it came out- it felt really different atmospherically than anything else I had played up to that point. Kind of hard to explain, but it just gave me a certain “feeling” every time I played it. Great stuff.

Nothing unexpected after listening to you for years, but I enjoyed your takes.
My maybe top ten videogame worlds/universes (not including anything that you mentioned) would be something like:
    USA (Fallout)
    Unnamed Continent (Witcher)
    Russia (Metro)
    Forgotten Realms (Baldur's Gate/D&D)
    Carribean (Monkey Island)
    Gotham (Arkham Series)
    Universe (Metroid)
    Nirn (Elder Scrolls)
    Earth (Deus Ex Franchise)
    Silent Hill

Great video but I think your inner PlayStation fan was coming out a bit for Resistance.
I'm not sure I understand the point you were trying to make. Correct me if I'm wrong but you basically said that the setting was so fantastic because the aliens took an interest in invading earth? What, then, differentiates it from any other piece of fiction where Earth is a "desirable little blue orb"?

  • @BrokerCast
    @BrokerCast 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good picks but I think Fallout is a far superior post apocalypse world than the last of us. I agree that the last of us has great characters but I find the setting itself to be pretty generic. Fallout is more unique and rich in lore but I really am comparing apples to oranges, they're very different. I'm glad you included mass effect. That setting is just as rich and memorable as star wars and star trek and it's really incredible that they pulled that off.

For me, it has to be Dragon Age. One of the most satisfying and interesting fictional worlds ever created. Love that world, love the games, especially Origins.

My favorite video game setting is probably the world of Bungie's Myth games in 1997 and 98. They were my favorite games for years. The Elder Scrolls universe is worthy of mention as well.
I've never liked the Final Fantasy games and Castlevania doesn't look like it would be up my alley either. I'm glad Dead Space and Mass Effect were mentioned, though.

Great stuff Colin!! I know you did not care for the game, but The Witcher 3 is incredibly deserving as well

On a related note, could you talk about games with the best atmospheres? Whenever I think about my favourite games, great atmosphere seems to be one of the few constants.
In my opinion, some of the games/series that accomplish this are:
    Fable
    Halo (ODST)
    The Batman Arkham games (asylum)
    Assassin’s creed (2)
    Silent Hill
Conker: Live & Reloaded (yeah I like it more than the original, sue me)
Call of Duty World at War (only that one)
    Oxenfree
Puppeteer (PS3 game, look it up)
    Bioshock (1 & 2)
    Elder Scrolls
    Dead Space
    Mario Sunshine
    Uncharted
    The Last of Us
    Metro
I’m probably forgetting some but these are the ones that come to mind first!

Oh man I love videogame atmosphere as well. Since you mentioned it, just a quick question: because you like atmosphere (and I presume ambience) in games, does that mean you are also a fan of in game weather and/or day/night cycles? I'm also a huge sucker for those but a lot of people seem surprised when I talk about loving rain in games or whatever. So yeah just wondering. :)

NismoR034 Absolutely. I love being immersed into the world a game creates and a persistent weather system and or day/night cycle can really help with that. It allows the player to experience another side of the world, making it feel more three dimensional. For example, Dying Light uses the day and night cycle to change the style of play, with more aggressive zombies only coming out at night.
Or in ODST, even though there’s no day/night cycle, you get to experience the city during it’s downfall and in the aftermath, which goes a long way to immersing the player.
Fun fact: ODST doesn’t render any rain, only the sound of it is present because it would take too much processing power! But it works all the same because they nailed the feel of a rainy night.

I love KH wholeheartedly, but it pulls too much from Disney to be on this list, imo. Good choise, though.
