I bought the Kitchen Queen 550 Grand Comfort 1 1/2 years ago, with the idea of heating my home in the winter. About 8 months ago, I gutted the kitchen and rebuilt it mostly by myself, so this is now my first winter using it. I absolutely love it.
Because of an idea for the wood stove placement, I started cutting wood 2 years ago. 😁. I just turned 66 and have been by myself for about 9-10 yrs now. Don’t have to be a spring chicken to try new ideas or make new goals. The stove is solid and meets my needs for heat and cooking very well. Cheers!

82 Years old and now right in the middle of my first full year of heating with wood. It’s going very well. I am very warm in Central Maine. a state no one has ever heard of or been to. I use the fat stick, but I would never ever oh my goodness use a blow torch. Wow. But there’s nothing more friendlyfriendly than a friendly fire. I have a full tank of oil as a back up that I haven’t had to use at all as the winter has been rather mild so far. This is early January 2023. I also have gas for my stove, but I could cook on the stove if I were out of electricity. I have solar, which would not help if I were out of electricity, but it certainly helps with a very low bill
The installation cost was not mine. I practiced with wood last year and stocked up ahead of time this year. Oak is superb- I have ash so I use more than you.
My stove is set into the (old) fireplace chimney which means that I do not have to worry about a hot pipe. Nice presentation here!

She makes for a dramatic statement in the kitchen. I would miss having this independence from the grid ~ Diane

Thank you for the tip with the propane torch.
I just started using a wood burning stove in my basement shop. I'm a bachelor so i turn the heat way down when I leave for work in the morning (and I like to sleep cool so the temperature is pretty low when i get home) I live in Ohio and our winters can be pretty harsh some years. Now I come home and light a fire which quickly heats the house up before I turn the gas furnace to normal heating. It's a small stove so i let it burn out before bed. I'm switching to a heat pump system (I have solar and an EV) so I'm almost done with paying for energy at this point. The little fire doesn't even use up the wood I cut just trimming the trees in my yard. I bought an old farm house inside a city of 2 million so thankfully my taxes are low as I'm still a 'farm'. I have a good sized garden, nearly an acre and plenty of free (wood mostly oak, maple and hickory) even a few Paw paw trees which I hear can grow in the UK!

Heating a room with a wood stove is easy, but cooking with a wood stove is difficult. It requires you to bring the stove up to a very high temperature, that most people aren't comfortable with. If you want to heat up a cast iron pan your wood stove will need to be burning at maximum power. A stove heated up to this level often will release a cooked paint smell every time you do it. It's a nice idea to have one of these stoves as an emergency cooking source. But it is not very practical. In days gone past people quickly realized that Coal stoves make a superior cook stove. Coal stoves produce much more heat, and it can be concentrated in a much smaller area.

    • @honeybugglehomestead

@@Smartfella_or_fartsmella Hello Paul! Thank you so much for your comment, you have shared some very interesting and informative information. As the weather has been so warm this past week, we would not light the cook stove. It does get very hot when I am cooking on the cook top and have realized that I need to wear thick apron. As propane prices has risen and that is how we have always heated our home, we needed to make long term decisions as to saving money. In our case, this is a more practical choice for our age.

I worked wood heaters for 60 years, never had one that smoked out like yours, curious about the condition of the chimney flu if it is not drawing properly. I always used the smaller bits and fat lighter wood on bottom and larger on top, that worked best for me.

    • @honeybugglehomestead
      @honeybugglehomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hello Jeffrey, thank you for your comment, I think it is a fair assessment. We believe the reason we have to take the time to warm up the flue is because we have one 45 degree bend and two 90 degree bends and our chimney is 30 foot high. Once everything is heated up, our draw if fine. Everything is brand new...the stove, the chimney pipes the triple wall thimble and the masonry chimney. We are going to try a couple of other ways to light the stove and will report back...stay tuned!

Its the right angle of the pipe that causes draw issues but I'm guessing he had no choice in the layout , or Posibly that wall is facing a head wind naturally plus it exits out the wall and that obviously would result in another curve for the stack run of pipe and it would immediately have a temp difference at that curve as it exits creating a turbulence in the draw convection resulting in a drag of air flow kind of like how an open front cooler works in the dairy part of a store its almost like a wall and has an affect simular to the surface tension of water in how it can hold its own properties in place .

Thanks for this I researched KQ's years ago - the company changed and the design changed but this new model seems nice. A lot of armchair experts giving you criticism and/or advice and you're so kind in your responses kudos to you! One thing I think is worth note - I feel safer with an exterior chimney as opposed to one that runs through the inside of the house - however there is a trade off. An inside chimney stays much warmer because 90% of it resides within the house, stays relatively warm, and will always draft much easier. An exterior chimney is the same temperature as it is outside and requires a pre-warm, in my opinion, to get the draft started. Every chimney, and every stove, requires trial and error methods for lighting and burning. I have no criticism for your pre-warm, or your top -down fire, or modern use of available methods such as propane torch - and its true Grandma didn't use one, but realistically if she had the technology back then - perhaps she would have used one. Also - draft is affected not only by a warm chimney or a cold chimney, and bends in the pipe, but also your landscape - whether you live on a windy hill, or down in a calm valley. Humidity, temperature, and wind conditions also affect it greatly. You must experiment to see what works for you in your location. I think you've done great for your particular circumstance. There exists no one size fits all solution with burning wood.

Maybe my chimney is easier to heat but I just burn whatever cardboard I have to heat up the chimney. There’s always plenty since we save cardboard boxes from food packaging, pizza boxes, mail, etc. Next to the cardboard I throw in a few handfuls of sticks collected from the woods. Sticks are free and plentiful, and don’t need to be stacked neatly as they’re irregularly shaped and will always allow airflow. On top of the sticks, you add the wood/logs. No special fire starting kindling needed.

Hello @cyrilbrun8764, Thank you for your comment, you can get a vacuum hose in there on the top part of the stove no problem....lots of room. As ours is new (as of this year) we have yet to clean off the soot. However all you need to do is lift off the eye hole cover over the oven and use your scraper to push the ash and soot down the side of the oven. I don't think we will vacuum ours. Then you can clean out the residue from the bottom where there is a clean out. I did contact the person who sold us the stove at KQ and he also delivered it to our farmhouse. He stated that we should clean it when it is at least 1/4 inch of soot/ash.
We are really enjoying our KQ 550 and will be happy to do a short video of the 17 gallon water reservoir. I will try to get that up next week.

I’ve had a Kitchen Queen for a few years now. I love it. I have never had a problem starting a fire in it. I don’t warm the flue. I save paper towel rolls and stuff them with saved dryer lint for kindling. I throw in a few small logs with my “kindling” and it always starts like a gem. When I use the oven to bake, I ignore recipes, and cook until the food is done, rotating a few times for even heat. The top is very hot over the firebox, so that’s where I fry, and I braise on a trivet over the fire, or on the stovetop in the middle, turning every now and then, or on the far right to slow cook. Love this stove. Very well made

Hello @donnalee1310! That lever that was opened for the torch to get to to warm the flue is called a damper or a draft. Thank you for bringing that to our attention as we didn't call it a damper, we referred to it as the flue. With the damper in the open position, it allows the smoke from the fire to continue up the stove pipe and out the chimney. With it in the closed position, the smoke/heat is directed to circulate around the oven box and heat the oven for baking. I like the idea of the propane torch to warm the flu. I'm going to try that. I use the 'small fire first' method but you do get smoke some times. One thing I do that works for me - is once the flu is warm and I light the main fire, (the point where you light your fat stick) I close the door but leave it open an inch. That creates a sort of super draw effect and I find I don't get any smoke coming in to the room and the fire catches quickly. Just thought I'd share that. I'll do a video on it some time this year. Wranglestar did a good video on this and 8m in is where he talks about the door. th-cam.com/video/CgKCBnxm3ig/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Wranglerstar

Yes there is a technique to lighting a wood cook stove unfortunately this video did not show it. If you knew anything about fire you would not put your kindling above the logs. That silliness with preheating is just that. Kindling and paper if you want to use paper goes on the bottom and the wood gets larger as you go up. If your stove smokes when you first light it you have the draft set wrong or possibly too short a chimney or too small a diameter pipe.

@@honeybugglehomestead A top down fire is best built outside when you are building a fire directly on the snow. Building that kind of fire in a stove works directly opposite of physics and slows down how fast your fire will catch. I watched your video and you have a draft problem which is why you are having problems. You should not be having to open the ash door or the main burn door to get that fire going.. When was the last time you looked up or down your chimney? When I fire up my Lund or even the Franklin for that matter when either is burning they have a low frequency howl in them from the draft. In your video you said that you cleaned the chimney with a brush from the bottom. THere is much more to it then that you need to brush all the surfaces including the pipes and fire screen and roof cap. If you just run a brush up from the bottom your fire screen in the roof cap is probably half clogged and the underside of the cap probably has ash stringers hanging down partially blocking the draft.

@@hartstudebakerkid Hello again! Actually this is a brand new wood stove, new stove pipes and and a brand new masonry chimney. At the time of the filming of this video, we had lit this stove about 10 times. I admit, we have much to learn and again you are very knowledgable and we appreciate you taking the time to comment here as many people look for answers to their wood stove problems, looking to the comment section of TH-cam videos. Here is the link about building a "top down" fire. We may have it all wrong and if we do, we will be the first to admit it here. I have copied your instructions for cleaning when brushing all of the surfaces...we will definitely use your process as it is very thorough indeed. @@honeybugglehomestead I am a US Forest Service and Fire Department Firewise certified fire prevention specialist so I know the physics of fire and the top down fire building slows the fire growth.
Is it possible you are simply not setting your dampers right. I think I saw one on the pipe and your stove could have one and then you have the slider for the air feed.
You admitted that you have only lit this stove 10 times which is why I suspect that you are setting it wrong because you should feel the draft on your hand once you have it set right.

Hello! Our Mini Split system is directly behind the cook stove outside and the fittings for the upstairs unit are running up the outside siding right where a straight stove pipe could have gone. This was our only option to have the angle of the pipes the way they are now.. Glad you are here visiting our channel! Happy New Year.
