    Making a dutch door for my coffee shop. I hastily grabbed a door i assumed was solid wood. We have not cut it yet but my guy was worried it was hollow cuz that would be a real problem. Now i can see it really is not a problem at all. Cool.

    Nice job. Just a suggestion. That inside door knob is real close to the bottom of the shelf. I foresee scrapped knuckles. I would replace that door knob with a lever style door handle.

  • @BrianOfBham

    What if you dont have a wood planer? Is there a standard lumber size like a 1 x 1 that might fit inside the door?

    • @Robinson-Homestead
      @Robinson-Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure about that but if no planner you can use a table saw to trim your wood to the size you need , hope this helps.

  • @Raynestorm1968
    @Raynestorm1968 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Looks great, I just have one small criticism.
    The door knob looks very hard to use on the front side. Looks like it will be hard to get your hand in there and turn it to open it. I can see lots of skinned knuckles.
    I think if I use this build I am going to have to bottom half higher to allow more room for the door knob. Thanks for the video though. It answered some questions I had about how to fill in the hollow ends.

    • @Robinson-Homestead
      @Robinson-Homestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would be best to leave more room that was the first one I built.

    • @Raynestorm1968
      @Raynestorm1968 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Robinson-Homestead actually, I was just browsing pics of Dutch doors and I found one I really like that has a shelf that sits right in the middle so there is some sticking out both sides and it's cut narrower than the door, so the door knob is free and clear.
      Pretty damn good for your first build. I hope I am lucky enough to have mine come out looking half that nice.
      I will be building mine next week, wish me luck LOL

  • @stevesautorepair
    @stevesautorepair ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You seem to be pretty accurate with everything but why on earth did you put the hinge on upside down, head is facing downward and will work out. Did you pop the pin out of the hinge and turn it or leave it that way?

    I'm thinking of doing this with the door to my hall coat closet, but with the knob on the top. The bottom gets hung up on my welcome mat and I really only need the top open to get at coats. I hardly ever use the stuff I keep lower down in there. I was thinking that the latch would be the tricky part, but the type you used looks perfect. Will you come weld a washer on it for me?

    couldve used much smaller "brackets" under the door. If it needed braces how come not just some small wooden "triangle-cubes" under the shelf, like about 2 inches thick or some pre-fab molding for underneath?
    this "dutch door "may be functional but not very attractive in the quaint old style.
    Those little shelves are usually on both sides.

    I can’t believe you would not just purchase a new solid door instead and cut that. All the labor you’re doing -woah - just to rig a cheap hollow door! Why? Me personally, I wouldn’t. I mean, this is interesting, but a solid door couldn’t cost more than $80-100

    • @TMNTsMama
      @TMNTsMama 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A hollow door is sturdy enough but also lightweight enough to not tear out of the frame. Plus if that's what you have it would be more cost effective. It's not like it's an entrance door to the house, just to the basement.
