Good amvs spoil fairly little about an anime so they were useful. On the other, some AMVs could be really well done and creative. Steel Fenders is a nice example of that in my opinion. They could be enjoyable in their own right on their own whether you'd watched the shows they're from or not.
There are still lots of amvs VermillionAMV is a channel that recompilates amvs from different creators, and there are more channels like that. But right now I only remember this one.
