    Pro Tip: I usually make a 350MB to 450MB EFI partition, because in case I need to dual boot or even add bootable recovery environments.
    And I also create the 128MB MSR partition before the main data partition.
    Convert GPT
    Create part efi size=350
    Format quick FS=fat32 Label=System
    Ass letter=g
    Create part MSR size=128
    Create part PRI
    Format quick FS=NTFS label=WinDrive
    Assign letter=C
    ___
    But great info, I didn't know how to deploy Windows from the command line, I might use it a lot.
    I usually have a premade image with all of my stuff, as a backup (Acronis or Aomei) and then just patch in the drives from a windows pe with:
    dism /image:c:\ /add-driver /recurse /driver:F:\WhereverMyDriversAre\

    • @anotheryoutubeuser
      @anotheryoutubeuser ปีที่แล้ว

      Does the MSR partition not need to be assigned a letter?

  • @Melody666
    @Melody666 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I just want to say that you forgot to create a msr partition (create partition msr size=400), also you can optimize the image before booting with dism /image:C:\ /optimize-image /boot
    Not making a MSR partition can break upgrades, in-place upgrades, system restore / snapshotting, system resetting, and also break some servicing operations in the OS.

      You might be able to create a custom ISO using the Windows ADK and accomplish that. I don't know for sure as I haven't tested that specifically, but it might be worth looking into. It might be kind of tricky with that method if it's possible at all.

    • @MikeBramm
      @MikeBramm ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, Microsoft has several tools that allow you to build the WIM file as needed. You can then write a script to partition and format the drive, then apply the WIM file, basically what he showed in the video. My company sells PCs and I have created a bootable USB drive that the production department uses to image the PCs. It makes it very easy for the production department and is much quicker than manually clicking on things using the Wizard installer (and keeps them from making any incorrect selections). Once the PC has been imaged, the end user just boots it up to my custom shell and application.

    What blew my mind was that if you don't enter a password for a local account, you skip the, frankly, idiotic security questions - I'm happy that I know this now, but this tad bit of knowledge would have come really handy just a couple of weeks ago when I needed to set up 3 different installations. With all this intensifying Microsoft idiocy, I'm so happy I switched to Linux as my base system 15+ years ago.

  • @mucookul
    @mucookul ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Just saying a few things, format uses ntfs by default and you don’t really need quick for partition 1 since most computers would take less than a second to fully zero out 100 mb. Also amazing video, I though the size needed to be 512, but you showed it can be a minimum of 100.

    • @dingokidneys
      @dingokidneys ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think you may need a bigger EFI partition if you want to be able to boot more than one OS. You'll end up with more files occupying more space in that case. I guess many automatic partitioning schemes make allowance "just in case".

    • @CTSFanSam
      @CTSFanSam ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you have an HP computer, go bigger. I had a bugger of a time with an HP bios update. It uses the efi to store the update program/info, then does the bios update via booting. After the update does its thing, it reverts the boot process back to windows. I had to use Linux tools to resize the efi partition to get the bios updated.

    Great video, Chris! It would have been even better if you also included the steps to create the recovery partition during the pre-installation phase as, after populating all the remaining space to the system partition, it requires many more steps and additional software (partition management tools) to do give users the ability to reset their systems to a "factory" state. Hope you can take my suggestion into consideration in a future video. Good job!

    Since your Windows 11 video, I've exclusively installed windows via the command line. It's a powerful tool to have absolute control over patitioning (you only need EFI and OS partition, nothing else). And I also trim with NTlite and MSMG (b pass). Once completed, I run the utility and after 5 minutes (after intiial boot is complete), the process count sits at 55/57. Windows Store and Windows Live accounts are still functional, so if you remove those as well, you can get it down to 50 probably xD
    (I've also removed TPM, bitlocker, defender, smartscreen, UAC is kept as dependency but I use the local admin account anyways so I don't get any UAC prompt and everything is elevated. I know; it's not recommanded but my usage is very 'sandboxed' so it's fine).
    (If you remove UAC module entirely, everyone is an administrator and the run window will show that the command will be elevated, despite not being logged as admin).

      @@oldmandeckhand Yes.
      On Apple silicon, you're best off with virtual machines instead of a multi-boot setup. Win11 doesn't run bare metal on Apple silicon (yet? I don't know if there's any real work to make is run bare metal) and neither does Linux (Asahi is making great strides, but is still quite a ways from being production software ready for normal use).

      it is not necessary, but still useful if you don't want the recovery partition at the end of the disk. When i got a new SSD i thought to myself that i could make a windows recovery image just to realize that i couldn't expand from 240 to 512 gb that i bought because of the recovery partition was at the end. Frustrated by it i just did a clean install.

    Pro Tip. Not choosing Quick Format will actually mark bad sectors as bad which could avoid tons of migraines.

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Relatively-modern hard drives (from the past 25 years or so) remap bad sectors internally. If the full format detects bad sectors something is very wrong.

    • @Radidsh
      @Radidsh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To elaborate, a full format would mark bad sectors in the file system itself only up to the Windows Vista era. With Windows Vista, full format instead zeroes out the partition. If the disk happens to have a bad sector, the disk is indirectly being told that nothing of value resides there, and if it cannot read nor write to that area, it will now remap that sector to a spare sector instead, with the process being done on the physical disk level as opposed to the file system, or at least that's how I figured.
      I think the comment was blocked for posting the source link to Microsoft documentation, so I am going to omit that this second time, haha

    I'd love to see a preset for gamers. There are a lot of additional tweaks we do.

    I remember having to do this when I had to install from a USB drive, I encountered the bug where the installer thinks it's still a dvd drive (I believe that was the issue?) And it kept trying to overwrite stuff on the USB the iso was on. Definitely reminded me yet again why I dd Linux on my personal computer

    So this is the way to do it to prevent windows installing bootloader on another disk?

    Hi Chris, you need to look at your toolbox because it messes up the context menu. When you hover over view/sort option it just shows the option instantly instead of taking 1s time. It looks very weird system design wise.

    Nice! Loved it. My next windoze install will be like this......
    One small query - I want to have the Users dir on a separate partition. How do I do this?
    Also, since this is a Powershell based install - is it possible to do this install with just 1 .ps1 file?
    Please let me know...... :)

    After my last Windows update fiasco I gave up on their operating system. I found that Windows 11 is an unstable mess that takes up too much of my time trying to keep it up. Even with your great advice and fixes, it is not something I want to constantly maintain. Hello Linux!

    I always use diskpart clean when wiping a drive to reinstall Windows, I had issues with the built in partition wizard once and don't trust it anymore, also diskpart makes it easy to see if the drive is GPT. Also I am not sure if this was on purpose or not but the installer also creates a recovery partition, even though it rarely works its nice to have just in case you don't have a usb around

    I installed windows 11 as english-world as recommended in the last video. At the first installation at startup, microsoft store did not work and I had to change the options but in the second installation it was present as in the classic version of windows 11, why?

    OUTSTANDING!!!!! - I wish I would have thought of this. Chris - You ROCK!!!!!😉 I am a bit curious, why you chose to label this work as "the Arch Linux Way" Did you come up with this, or is this something you discovered within Arch documentation? Note: Even if this information was obtained from Arch makes no difference. What really matters is; 1.) "You recognized the value your patrons will gain using this method". 2.) "The clear concise and elegant style you presented it"! As is your way to inform & educate. Thank You, for being YOU! - Fantastic!!!! A Technicians Tech! Not just an opinion. It's a FACT! That you prove with every video you produce & post. It is my honor to know you.
