Relates to both as both Ruby and Neo went into the tree, but Neo has always been the alter ego for Trivia after the abuse she went through from her parents, as seen in Roman Holiday, she'd be ready for a new self going into this season.

Neo exacts her revenge, but immediately after she loses her mind, realizing revenge was her only motivation, she eventually let's go of the feelings in the finally, almost losing it in the process.

Was very curious to see what the soundtrack would be like now without Jeff Williams & MAN, they did not disappoint. Still has that same energy and Casey Williams sounds great as always. At this point it feels like RWBY music is one of the main reasons I’m still following the series 😂

The call backs to the Vol. 2 OP in For Every Life really feels like a spit in the face on all their "childish dreams". (Also from Vol. 8 OP) I really do love how the later tracks often reference earlier ones, it shows the development of the characters and their mental states throughout the series.
Also, from Vol. 2 "There's a point where it tips, there's a point where it breaks, there's a point where it bends and a point we just can't take anymore." Volume 9 is that point for Ruby. She's one good sneeze away from completely breaking down.
I can't help but think that last part is comment on how god-awful the Volume 7 intro is 😂

This is why I always loved the openings for RWBY because each opening was basically stating how the volume was going to go without you even realizing it. But it becomes so much more noticeable when the full song is released long after the volume is over.

Most of the openings are like this but I found this one to hardest to decipher early mainly because I couldn't make out half the worlds until I saw this video. I always heard "A new me, I'm ready..." as "I'm moody and ready" which I KNEW was wrong, but I couldn't hear anything else XD The rest of the song went along those lines for me too.

This volume spoke volumes to us fighting depression. I really loved the way they managed to show the whole thing, with a realistic happy ending (?)
Yeah, this song has been a great regular listen for struggling with mental illness and my identity. Just rings so true, especially lines like "A new me I'm ready but who will I find, Inside, I gotta let go but could I lose my mind?"

I have come from the future to inform you that the whole album is pure fire
You can tell that Ruby is going to go through some deep shit through these lyrics. Everything she's done up to this point has all been for nothing. She failed to save Pyrrha or stop the Fall of Beacon, she failed to secure Haven, she failed to protect Mantle or Atlas, she failed to save Penny, she failed to keep two of the Relics safe. No matter how much good she's tried to do for the world, things have only gotten worse. She's going to put all that failure on her own shoulders and it will break her.
And her friends might not be able to pull her out of this pit of despair she is putting herself in.

Well said! V5's ending made it seem like they saved Haven, but all they did was save a dead body of an institution. Ruby traveling through the Mistral Deadlands in V4 also really painted a bleak picture of the world outside the main city. Despite trying to do what she "thought was right" in Atlas her refusal to be truthful to Ironwood eventually pushed him over an edge, when she was questioned over her decision making at the start of V8 she became defensive.
Losing Penny, her best friend that she sacrificed two cities to save, will eat away at her. I fear that Ruby is approaching that same edge which Ironwood fell over, where all of her failures threaten to crush her and turn her into something else, not necessarily for the better.
Or... she can start to recognize her mistakes, reflect upon her errors and seek to become a better person rather than "having never learned from her initial failures, she only succeeded in spreading it."

You know if you listen to the Openings together it becomes apparent that Ruby's been Battling Depression since season 3.
Then explain Vol. 7’s opening
@@MiguelMartinon well, volume 7 started off looking the most positive they'd been in a long time, like they might be able to push back against Salem for once. But then it all goes to shit, and then volume 8 happens.
The fact that Atlas seemed like it would be their chance to strike back in some way only for it all to go so wrong probably ended up being a massive hit to Ruby's confidence, I'd reckon it may have been THE tipping point that's made Ruby so despondent.
Between the way relations with Ironwood crumbled, the burden of being the leader with Salem on their doorstep with Ironwood against them, and then *her* plan failing, any feelings of doubt and depression definitely got emphasized.
TLDR: Atlas looked like their chance to do something besides run, so the opening was much more hopeful than usual. Then it all goes so wrong and all that potential cheer goes out the window for Ruby as she feels properly crushed by her failure, cue the volume 9 despondence.

@@MiguelMartinon Too add to Lucas' statement, depression also isn't a constant, as we can still see her smiling and being positive in points past volume 3. She was still struggling with the situation and self-guilt of putting people on edge with lying to Ironwood in 7. Things were looking good, but they didn't stay good at all for very long.
The future of the RWBY soundtrack is in good hands indeed!

I love the way the vocals don't follow the general beat/tempo in parts. It gives the song an eerie feeling. Perfectly fits the strange nature of this wonderland the team has found themselves in.
I have a LOT of thoughts on V9 opening but the thing I've been focusing on the most is how the mysterious girl (most likely Alyx from "The Girl who Fell Through the World") is paralleling Ruby and Neo. I have two main theories as to why this is.
1. Alyx may be serving as a cautionary tale for the person Ruby and Neo themselves may become if they don't end up confronting the emotional distress that's consuming them. After all, Alyx seems to have the playfulness that both Ruby and Neo themselves have.
2. If you keep in mind Oz description of the story ("A young girl flees the consequences of a choice, to a magical place. But, having never learned from her initial failure, she only succeeds in spreading it")
I think Neo represents Alyx in the sense that both of them will alter the Everafter for the worse.
After all, while Ruby will be going through her own trials, I don't see her taking out her frustrations on this new world. Neo on the other has no such remorse. And given how Neo is standing in front of pink flames at the bottom of the Everafter portrait before transitioning into Alyx, it further illustrates how Neo's actions will spread across the Everafter like wildfire.
Neo is angry and wants to kill Ruby for the death of Roman (as far as she knows). Which isn't exactly untrue as Neo getting sent floating away ticked off Roman and summoned a Grimm to eat him
Impressive! It’s sad Jeff retired, but Casey did a good job for being pretty much the first song she wrote on her own.
Actually, ‘Fear’ in Volume 7 was her first attempt at writing a full song by herself for RWBY if I remember correctly. It’s clear to me that she’s worked hard to improve since then.

@@vashtinayagar1325 Just checked at the wiki. Casey is listed as the composer for ‘Until the End’, but not for ‘Fear’, that was Jeff. I got it wrong. That’s a pleasant surprise, I always though ‘Fear’ was one of the weaker songs in the series, ‘Until the End’ is a much stronger start for her.
Martin is also composing the music btw, give the man some credit

Amazing song as always! These lyrics are so ominous with the way it’s seems to be setting Ruby’s arc up this season. She has so many similarities to Salem it’s so interesting, makes you wonder if she’s walking down a path of darkness which will lead to her become exactly like Salem or if she will rise above the hardships she has faced and become someone who can be what Salem could not. Ether way it’ll be interesting to see and I kinda hope Ruby can maybe understand Salem better than she ever has or maybe we can even get an interaction between the two, heck if Ruby does start walking a darker path it might lead her to Salem’s side would be interesting to see since we still know nothing of what she plans to do with the relics when she finally gathers them all (Ozma has made a guess at what she’s planning to do with the relics and I personally don’t believe we can trust that information nor Tyrian’s cause well he’s got a few screws loose lol)
I didn't quite see her following Salem's path, but Ironwood's. In V8 especially there was a sense that both felt "I know what's best for Remnant!" (Ironwood outright says it and Ruby's actions point to her thinking she knew what was best). She has become so blind to anything other than what it means to be a "hero in the fairytales"! Her successes built upon themselves until she felt she was invincible and this arrogance lead her to this failure.
Now I am overjoyed that this volume looks to be a time for reflection, Penny's death, her best friend that she sacrificed two cities to save, is going to weigh on her tremendously, no matter how hard she tries to bite back against it. We saw that at the end of Episode 1. As the looming crush of her failures in Atlas sit upon her shoulders she will have to either change or lose herself in her grief.
@@HighPriestFuneral I think she will follow Salems path to an extent... the Pure soul. We know Ozpin stated that victory is sometimes in a simpler more honest soul.

@@callumbaurley716 I mean we don’t fully know what Salem’s path is besides “Destroying the current world system” though I do have a theory about it, she wants to use the relics and the silver eyes to kill the gods themselves and honestly if Ruby does go down this darker path I can see her being OK with that line of thinking.

She has been a free spirited girl, but with the death of her best friend, the destruction of both Beacon and Atlas, the death of her mom by Salem's hands, and the death of Pyrrha. All of that is finally getting to her, and now we need to see what she will decide to do

I think this is a connection to all the characters, including the girl that fell through the world "Alex". Everyone has always tried their hardest, but no matter what, they last everything. Even if they did win, at what cost?
Ruby failed to protect her friends, family, Beacon, secure Haven, save Atlas and Mantle (making thousands homeless), people are dead on her watch, both relics are now with Salem, and Cinder threw her down the pit to what could've been her death for all she knew. Her trying to stay positive and find answers that were as simple as possible, blew up in her face. Deep down, she still wants to believe that she's a hero that can save everyone, but now forced to see that she isn't.
Weiss failed to save her home, had to leave her sister while she was on the ground in tatters, and is trying to know how everything is through this sense of control she wants for security. Reguardless, her plans didn't work the way she wanted, and this happened time and time before. Like when she first ran away from home in volume 4 to find Winter, only to be in a crash after an attack, thrown in a cell in a bandit camp, and told her sister is back in Atlas.
Blake tried to keep everyone together and do what she thought was right but has a hard time trusting herself. Mainly after Adam and The White Fang, she found a side she belongs on, but when they divided and she had to pick, she had doubts on what to do. She seems to be uncertain about things and is getting frustrated by that. Now she is going by a book and noticing that they are making similar mistakes that Alex made.
Yang is charging in without noticing what she is doing. That dark creature that they fought, probably thought it was in danger and under attack, so it defended its self. She's not being patient and caused anger to sore in the town, and if she keeps this up, she will be a big part in probably starting another war in The Ever After.
Neo is hell bent on getting revenge, but doesn't even know who to blame after Cinder tricked her again. She now has a group of some kind behind her and will o to them what Cinder did to her most likely.
Jaune always felt like he was never good enough. He failed Pyrhha, he failed to get back to his team, he wasn't fast enough to go through the portal, he couldn't beat Cinder and lost to her a second time which led to Weiss getting nearly killed. He's gonna shoulder all his failures on himself, just like Ruby is going to do to herself and hold it all in until he breaks.
All of them are going to go through some deep self searching journeys that are going to harder and harder as they go until they are opened to changing themselves and letting their dark pasts stay in the past, but they can finally move on for the better. Maybe even find the key to beating Salem.

That opening guitar riff is phenomenal. I keep going back to that one part just to listen to it again and again. That part aside, however: the whole song is phenomenal, especially with the meaning behind the lyrics.
Casey’s voice has developed so much since she started singing for the series and it’s wonderful. Her voice has grown with the characters.
From what I have seen and after listening to this song, I have an undisputed feeling this Volume will explain the importance of balance within human nature, reminding us that life can be a cruel thief but always a gift, much like time or progress. Team RWBY will be conflicted by their identities acting like shades of their dark sides. One specific example would be accepting your past mistakes and tragedies (not fearing what might have been) as you eventually learn to forgive yourself since you may take responsibility for one event to another.
There may also be other life lessons much like sometimes, a monster and villain do not always exist as long as you’re not seeking them. Yet it’s actually trouble that be the one finding the hero. The most difficult and broking point in the Volume is Ruby learning to accept loss willingly in any conflict and kill someone upon ending their suffering, that way they be spared from more pain (when she and Cinder have their final match). Penny chose to give her life so that the maiden power can be carried on by Winter. Because of that fact, Ruby’s must respect other people’s decisions without blaming herself all the time.
This song is SO. FREAKING. GOOD. Whatever your feelings about the show, I don't think anyone could disagree that the music is always amazing.

I love how you can tell this is solely Casey’s and Martin’s work now, but that Jeff has still left a distinct impression on Casey’s style.
There’s elements of Jeff’s style but it’s been made uniquely Casey’s own version.
I’m VERY much looking forward to how Casey and Martin go with the soundtracks. I have been loving everything I heard in Vol 9. I’m ESPECIALLY giddy for Red Like Roses Part 3.

The lesson Ruby needs to learn this volume is not to choose between setting down her burden and carrying her burden, but rather to learn to share her burden with her teammates and allies. Ruby knows how to be a team leader, but she's still learning to be a team player -- the very lesson that her mother failed to learn. I'm predicting that Summer reached a point where she was afraid to risk her friends' lives, and nobly took off on her own (similar to Blake in V4), and that Ruby is going to encounter the same choice, but this time, make the right decision in trusting her friends to have her back.
Which is why I’m so surprised Blake didn’t tell Ruby that she needs to have faith in her teammates. Blake knows what that feeling is like

Yeah, it's one that sounds like a downer at the start, but goes fully triumphant by the end of the volume.
The voice at 2:30 saying you’re going to get yourself hurt/killed sounds like Coco a lot (machine gun purse girl who wears a beret and sunglasses in s2/3. And the “dont give up” at 2:48 sounds like Cinder I feel like.

Funnily enough, I immediately fell in love with the first part of the song, and actually wish more of the song was like that. Very much reminds me of the music of the original PS1 Spyro trilogy.
When it clicked that Volume 9 was going live and I watched episode 1, I knew this intro sounded good, but I wasnt entirely sold. After binging up to episode 8 and seeing the season unfold and hearing the lyrics, this song hits SO hard.
I especially love that last repeat if the chorus. Casey BELTS that line, and I just imagine Ruby's mindset reflecting that sentiment.

this song seems to suggest that we will see a parallel between ruby and neo as the protagonist and antagonist this volume. the first part of the song could fit with either of their perspectives because they are both girls who have suffered with loss of people close to them. neo will probably be the main villain in v9 but due to her having a very similar experience to ruby it will create an interesting dynamic
The ENTIRE song is about Ruby. The first part is about Neo's revenge being part of. (By a girl who lost her world) (Maintain balance/karma; balance is blind. 🎶 Tit for tat, eye for eye 🎶) (Vengeance is a riptide; Neo's unbridled rage and evolved semblance run rampant. In a fairy tale shell find; OH SHE FOUND RUBY, but notice it just cuts off) The part is about Ruby ASCENDING via rhe tree. Sinking down into the depths of "know"where to be undone as who she is now. Clasping tight unto memories means Ruby will remember who she is and her friends, even though the tree is supposed to erase the old her.
Inside is about becoming someone new, by letting the better parts of yourself out; but you worry about losing your mind the new person

Well if you're familiar with the literary concept of The Hero's Journey, I'm pretty sure we'd be in the part of it referred to as the abyss... basically the point where the character has hit rock bottom and undergoes a process of rebirth and refinement that leads to them coming out better and stronger than they were before their trial...so I imagine their time in Ever After is *not* going to be at all pleasant, but I don't think we have anything to worry about in the long run as this whole experience will only lead them all to learning from their missteps and coming out the other side better versions of themselves than they were before.
Definitely going to have this on repeat for quite a while, one of my favorite opening songs since Volume 8's "For Every Life" though in my opinion i think all of RWBY's opening songs have been amazing
Something I love about this show is it has truly made me feel like the villains might win, this song really shows how bleak the situation as a whole is, the heroes victories have been rare

-They beat Adam
-Emerald swapped sides
Otherwise even though Salem’s taken just as many blows as the heroes, she’s in the better position. There was The Fall of Beacon, the destruction of Atlus, and Haven academy is most likely in shambles because of Lionheart. The deaths of Pyrrha, Penny twice, Clover and Vine, Ironwood, and the group the fell into the ever after. There’s also the fact that Cinder technically has the bit of maiden powers she absorbed from both Raven and Penny, making her a bit of all but the Summer maiden. Really makes you question if the heroes win, in recent times media hasn’t been able to do that.
Maybe things will change in Vacuo but for now things really are looking bleak.

I was listening to this on 'Crunchyroll Dubs' channel and the quality sounded quite poor. But I now know it's just that channel's video. I would be shocked if the quality dropped of a RWBY Opening that is sang and composed by Casey Williams herself. Glad that wasn't the case. 😌

Always been a fan of Casey’s vocalwork.
And when she started releasing music of her own (well, not on her own obviously, I don’t know which member writes which piece but Limbo is a perfect album to listen in the car [both high energy at times while being ridiculously relaxing in others]) I legitimately grew to love it as well.
Too bad Jeff retired, I loved his vocal work and more metal/rock flavors at times but this is just as good.
Can’t wait to see if Casey has the same range of musical variety and how it will feel.

Not gonna lie I didn’t like the song at first, I couldn’t follow the time signature changes well and it sounded off. But a couple listens got me used to the switches and now I really like it!

I don't think so , Jaune is the one with said metamorphosis , she will suffer a lot in this arc and self-reflect too , but there are too many cautionary tales with Jaune and possibly Neo and Alyx , to avoid said dark metamorphosis in the end.

Yeah, the lyrics, and what we have seen of volume 9 so far, really suggests that Ruby is going to "ascend", becoming something better. She'll lose her memories, but "the heart will remember".
