Thank you. It’s really sad how people continue to defend and promote this, especially in a mismanaged senior group. People think just because it’s a reasonable circumstance (the rest have passed, which should be anticipated but pet death will happen) then the reality for the lone rat is also reasonable. It’s not. I really don’t get why this cope is so pervasive especially in dedicated rat (as pets) communities… cough cough Reddit.
We have a lone boy but will have friends soon because we had to get two of ours neutered as they were a group but he is going into intros soon we were really sad 😔 we were going to have to be alone and not what we wanted and our vets couldn't fit them in until they had the space so we made everything so easy for them and now they are neutered
He had a brother he passed away as well while waiting for our appointments for neuters and has been a roller coaster so he will have friends on Christmas day ❤
100% I just added 2 baby rescue girls to my group of females as i had only 2 left. It is so important for me that they have plenty of friends. Sometimes for people understand easier I compare rats to humans, as we are also a social species haha 😋 we couldnt live with 0 human interaction we would become crazy!
They are similar to us in that they need social interaction. I am not a fan of anthropomorphising them, though, as that can be very harmful. Especially if passed onto other species who are solitary animals.
if only people could stop anthropomorphizing their pets based on how they feel as a person. no, your rat will not be happy with just your company. no, your hamster will not get depressed without a companion. they are not you and have group or solitary requirements for a reason 😭
