What a great interviewer. The best journalism isn't on network TV....this guy is as good as it gets !! I love how informed Pat is, there are no stupid questions. Man, this guy puts the lost art form of journalism back on the map. It is refreshing to see a journalist tell a story on the content of the story and get the absolute best out of the story by doing his homework and doing the work. Pat has mastered his craft. Relax guy, Buster wasn't even that good when he best Tyson. People who understand boxing and Tyson's career know that Tyson beat himself that night. He showed up not interested, unmotivated, and barely even threw punches.
I remember where I was at 13 years old, sitting on my living room floor with my father when Douglas beat Tyson. Tyson was my absolute favorite athlete and I was crushed at 13. Hats off to Buster, great fight...shocked the world almost as much as he shocked me
Well said J.M I agree nice of you to give credit to Douglas for his performance that day I hope for nothing but the best for Douglas the rest of his life
I jumped so high when he knocked Tyson out, I hit my head on the ceiling. Granted, the ceilings weren't that high, but this was a fight I will never forget.
Buster was 1st class in a 3rd rate sketchy business. His accomplishment was minimized at the time but we are still talking about him 30 years later. God Bless you champ 🙏 Your accomplishments will live forever
Could you imagine the significance of that belt? To wake up every morning, look up at it and think about what motivated you to get it, how you got it, and who you beat to get it?! Truly, a story that should be retold as a part boxing history.
I met him at his gym in Ohio. What a great humble man! If ever someone deserved a title shot and then the championship it was him. Great guy took pics with my kids and signed shorts and gloves for us. Thanks Buster!!!! You were the better man that night for sure.
2Stroke Tyson ... 13 seconds to be exact. Yeah Mike got KO’d, but only if you count a touchdown after a team gets a fifth down, like the guy JR thinks. ✌️
2Stroke Tyson after getting rocked that hard, you want to rest as much as possible before fighting again. He probably would have gotten up before if the ref counted faster.

@@rilenixx show me the interview. Watch the interview with him and henry cejudo. This is the most recent interview. The reason why I called u out on the interview part because I don't know if you noticed , but Tyson has been silent on this issue. This loss had a tremendous effect on him. He hardly talks about it. The truth is, he trained for this fight like he did with his other fights. He underestimated Douglas. Buster kept coming to him and brought Tyson to deep waters, an environment he wasn't used to.
I absolutely loved this interview. I remember watching that fight. I was the only one openly cheering for him to win. Even after he won and I took an ass whoopin from a room full of my brothers and friends I still was the happiest kid there could be. Buster was,,,,,IS an inspiration and was to me when I was growing up. Especially after he won he taught me that ANYTHING is possible when you put your mind, body, and soul towards training. Thank you Mr Douglas. Losing my ma three years ago he had me in tears when he spoke of his loss.
I LOVED this night!!! I remember where I was, the ONLY dude that wanted Buster to win. I was over Mike Tysons ugliness, plus I lost my mother at a young age an I was devastated. I loved her so much!!! I was so happy for Douglas. I wish I would have only bet on the man. 42 to 1 odds. Great interview Patrick, once again!!!
Because a man can show his emotions and weakness to his mother. The father will just discipline and get you to overcome your fears or weaknesses. That’s why you need both parents when you are raising a child.
I was one of the believers! I watched the fight alone at my Aunt's house so I could tune out the distractions and what I knew would happen, happened. I'm from Columbus and my father was friends with Buster's Dad. My dad was very respected and revered and he admired Buster's Dad. We met him at Beatty Recreation Center when we were kids and I can still remember the smell of the gym and how the big brown leather training gloves dwarfed my hands. Buster must've been around somewhere, but I only knew about his Dad "Dynamite" at the time because of he and my Dad's relationship. More than anything, i always admired Buster's intellect and reverence for his parents. The way he describes his parents and their relationship reminds me of how much I revere my Mom and Dad and how my Dad reared me and my brothers. Last week, my son started training with Buster Douglas and believe it or not, I see Buster every day. His body moves a little bit slower, but his mind is still all there - as witnessed in this video. I think he's one of the most fascinating people in the world - ever and I'm honored to have him share his legacy with my family through his work with my son. I don't have many heroes, but he's one of mine.
Buster The Cost of Love we pay with the Grief of a loved one when they pass..The more grief you feel is the more love we gave,, god bless you man,,your good person..
I grew up in Columbus-moved here from Oakland,Ca in 1966. I was always a Tyson fan until I heard Buster was fighting him. I had to go to a local pub to watch the fight as it was “blacked-out” on all the local networks, and when he laid that 3 punch combination on Mike I knew we had just witnessed history. I worked at the university so on the day they had Buster “dot the I” on the band’s famous “script Ohio,” I was at the game and it took me 3 try’s to bust through security on the sidelines, and run up and shake Buster’s hand. (I’m not a fighter but I was a United States Marine and wasn’t going to give up easily) and then, probably 20 years later, I saw Buster again and told him “I was the guy who had security all over me while I was shaking your hand before the game in 1990 (or 91-it was a while ago) and he remembered me. Signed an autograph that said “Peace and Love” (to me) Buster. I treasure that little piece of paper to this day. My son will get it when I shake free of this dimension and he knows this history and glory James Buster brought to this “cowtown.” He’s a fantastic person-still helping disadvantaged youth in our city-and he’s a great MAN. I’ve met Ali too and grew up watching him with my dad when I was a kid in the late 60s and 70s. Ali was great too but Buster will always be “The greatest” in my eyes, just for who he is and what he’s done, and continues to do. God Bless you Buster. If you ever need a platoon of Marines for anything-I will make sure we’re there for you. 👊🏽👍❤️✌️
I was just watching a Mike Tyson video and thinking to myself "I wish Joe Rogan would interview Buster Douglas." And then this popped up. Looks like Patrick Bet David beat Joe Rogan to the punch. Thanks for continuing to provide us with amazing interviews with such interesting people, Mr. Davis.
Patrick Bet-David does great interviews. His Mike Tyson and James "Buster" Douglas interviews changed my whole perspective of processing, judging and choosing my favorite sporting competitors.
History now shows that James Buster Douglas was a damn good fighter and not the joke the media made him out to be. He was a top rank contender, ABSOLUTELY no pushover. He fought and knocked out plenty of good fighters. He knocked out Oliver McCall right before Tyson......the same top ranked Oliver McCall who knocked Lennox Lewis out. Bottom line is Douglas was a terrible matchup for Tyson, he had him on size, reach, strength, speed, heart.....I don't care which Tyson Buster faced, he would have had a huge problem with him any time anywhere
James, I am hoping you will read this. I watched that fight live on TV and made a record on VHS. I still have the tape. your performance on that day is my favorite heavyweight fight, the greatest performance ever in a heavyweight fight. it is unmatched. also from a spiritual point of view, it is a masterpiece! it is the greatest heavyweight fight ever. I think you did perfectly in Tokyo on that night. you have been prepared for Tyson perfectly, countered all the things that made him effective. you didn't wait and reacted, instead you have been the one who hit first. double jabbed. you didn't stop after you hit him, you kept on punching and then fixed him. you have been a split second faster than Tyson in every action. your mindset and spiritual strength on that night made the impossible happen. you did it for your mom. Everyone was scared of Mike Tyson, but I didn't see any fear on your side. not a glimpse of fear. I am convinced, *you would have beaten Mike Tyson on any day in his career* with that performance. you won because you were better than Tyson has ever been. you won because you fought a perfect fight. that lucky uppercut from Tyson was part of it. you took it as a reminder of who is standing on the other side, who ate countless punches from you, and it told you, to finish him now. therefore you did it 1 round later. You created a miracle. due to incredible spiritual strength and perfect physical control.
Great interview buster Douglas was a great heavy weight back in the day.. remeber watching his fight with Mike Tyson maybe Tyson could get buster Douglas up on his hotboxing podcast & smoke some weed with him & talk about their fight...
@@MrSweettipI havent seen that fight. I need to watch it. I was too young to even understand all that. What year was it holyfield knocked out buster? I disliked 95% of tysons opponents. Buster and Holyfield was not in that 95%. Im not sure why I liked buster and holyfield so much. I think it was bc they didnt come in there talking all that smack just to get demolished. They came in quiet, did their thang then left. Most of tysons opponents were overly cocky if you ask me. Dont get me wrong, tyson was cocky also but not like the others were. Tyson was respectful for the most part. Like tyson would knock his opponents out and then go over there and help them up and make sure they were okay. That was one of my favorite things abt tyson. Buster and holyfield give off the same vibe. Tyson man I couldnt imagine how far he would’ve gone without the drugs, wife and that crook don king. To say Tyson wasnt an absolute BEAST is just foolish and there are all kinds of ppl that say that. Most of tysons opponents towered over tyson. They had height and reach and tyson still dominated. Unless I am wrong, tyson didnt start losing until the other issues came, which would make sense. Tyson knew what he was abt and the damage he could cause, i dont think it was him wantinf to be cocky he just knew what was up. I would LOVE for buster, tyson and Holyfield alll sit down with a 2 hour long video and talking with each other. That would be legit. Holyfield and tyson has sat down in interviews a few times. 2 of my favorite opponents of tysons were buster and holyfield and there was 1 other one but cant think of his name. If I was just some tyson fanboy I wouldnt like Holyfield or buster at all bc they beat him. Boxing used to be the sht back in the day. Now its wack. Look at the Jake and Tyson fight, that sht was rigged like a mf. Thats not cool. Infact, made me lose a little respect for tyson for doing that to his fans for a paycheck. It’s obvious tyson wasnt even tryinf and didnt even wanna be there. The boxing community should be outraged at that rigged match. Boxing was one of the sports to for the most part be 100% legit bc most other sports are garbage these days. Much respect to holyfield, buster though. They the real mvp to go in a ring and destroy the iron mike tyson. His punches even sound terrifying lol
I was 16 when this fight happened. I was a boxing fan, and had grown up watching Mike Tyson obliterate everything in his path. I didn't know Douglas at all, but I watched this fight on TV anyway, because I watched all of Tyson's fights that I could. I (and everyone I knew) gave Douglas no chance. It was as close to a sure thing I've ever seen. Then the fight started. Douglas made it out of Round 1 which was the usually the end of the line for many of Tyson's outmatched opponents. Then a few more, and a growing sense of 'wtf is happening? What's wrong with Mike?' Douglas was holding his own, which, in itself, was more than anyone expected. Then Douglas got stronger and Tyson faded, and I thought, 'I think Douglas is actually winning this thing!' Then, the world order was restored when Tyson finally connected with one of his lethal uppercuts and Douglas went down. I was impressed when Douglas got up, but figured that it was only a matter of time before Tyson took him out. But, a funny thing happened. Against all odds, Douglas did more then just win the next rounds, he was beating the crap out of Tyson. It was like watching Superman get beat up. Finally Tyson fell and was counted out. I wanted so badly to dislike Buster Douglas for destroying a superhero, but, as the world got to know him, it was impossible to hate him. My hate turned to respect for the feat Douglas had achieved. After watching this, it's clear that Douglas is still one of the 'good guys.' Respect to you, Champ!
If anyone is interested in getting the in-depth story of who Buster Douglas was as a fighter, and a man, up to the Tyson fight, and conversely the same on Tyson up to the same point, read the book The Last Great Fight by Joe Layden. Such a great read and I came away feeling like I had been there. Great interview - well worth the time!!
"It was my mum" life sucks in life so much sometimes. James loved his mom like we all do. Although sometimes we fight and argue and not speak for a few years "Its still my mom".
Enjoyed the interview, letting Buster tell his story and express his emotions. His story about the 8th round was very funny when Tyson put him on his back and he realized that Tyson was still balling!
Would you really want to see a story about sombody only winning TECHNICALLY!! ONLY ONCE!! and then never being on top again... somthing that was TOTALLY in his control not to let happen.

Douglas was going through some tough times while Tyson was partying and letting loose, forgetting that he could be defeated. There is nothing more powerful than your *why* and Douglas’s mother was more than enough *why* to make it happen.
The Champ! I had the pleasure of serving the Champ lunch on a regular basis over an 8 yr period (2004-2012). At first The Champ was vastly overweight and eating meatball subs and drinking diet coke. By the end of my days at the restaurant The Champ had slimmed down eating healthy and drinking water. The Champ was always with Jon Johnson and they were always gentlemen and treated the staff and guest excellent. Johnson's son is a lawyer and was a regualr at the restaurant . Jon Jr told the owner that he, The Champ, Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley (Ralphie from A Christmas Story) had been dicussing a Buster Douglas movie and had shot test test footage. I kind of regret never asking for a photo or autograph from the crew but they knew they could eat in peace and not be bothered. Buster boxed at a nightclub called Screamin Willie's in the early 80's. The Champ was and is very Humble and he has always given back to the community and city of Columbus.
Wow it shows how powerful mothers are god bless u and all the mothers plz take care of your moms if they still around they are precious people, he definitely won because he lost his mom, u can’t mess with that anger
I love this guy. I'm so happy to hear this from James. Its been a huge missing piece to this story overall in the media in terms of frequency. James was a great boxer. People talk about him so negatively...it makes zero sense. You don't get a chance at the title if you can't throw. Most people would get absolutely destroyed by a featherweight that comment negatively about James. Nevermind a ranked heavyweight.
I respect Buster, but you got to tell Tysons side to get a real perspective on the overall fight. Lets be honest, Tyson had no interest in fighting that fight, he took it lightly and had a lot of problems outside the ring. But i respect the focus and the fact Buster was a decent fighter.
...and the lesson is...when you take another pro heavyweight lightly because you think you're the most dominant fighter in the world...expect a proper and systematic ass whoopin'. James respected the art, the history and the work for that fight and Tyson didn't. There's zero shortcuts in the pro's and Tyson learned that the hard way in Tokyo. You never surround yourself with "yes"men. They make you soft.
@@normmacdonaldrules4602 And I wouldnt disagree with you. But for one night Douglas was perfect. He didnt respect the art in his previous title shots, nor did he respect the art 6 months later against Holyfield when he came in like a fat bum and not a Champion. I respect Douglas for what he done in Tokyo, however I respect Tyson a hell of a lot more because he was a hell of a fighter. He was 23 years of age, his mum was dead, Cus D'amato was dead, his marriage was over, he was king of the world, however, can you imagine being 23 years old, a multi millionaire, global super star? Aside from his personal problems the motivation wasnt there. It may sound like excuses, but you have to look at both sides. Buster lost horrorbly to holyfield, he looked nothing like the Buster of Tokyo, and if you watch that fight he gave up. Tyson went on to ko his next 3 opponents before going to prison and Douglas refused a rematch. Nothings never quite as black and white as youve tried to portray.
I didn't "try to portray" anything. I told the truth. Apparently you missed the whole part where Don King completely railroaded Douglas. You've got a whole different narrative going on in your head. I didn't say anything at all about Tyson the first time. Not one word. That was you. Then I told you why Tyson lost that fight. Nothing more, nothing less. Douglas mom died suddenly right before that fight. Immediately before that fight. You're arguing with ghosts, man. Douglas won. Tyson lost. The End. Forever.
@@shamrockballs1066 ' Nothings never quite as black and white as youve tried to portray.' well in this context talking about black and white doesn't cut it. Boxers being black.
As was the premise of "Rocky" , if "good" works really hard, it can hang with greatness. Especially if greatness is off. And that was the case here. But beyond that, props to Douglas because he really did fight Tyson perfectly. He broke the code. After that, it was easy for others top follow suit.
One of the most iconic heavyweight fights in history , had an interesting backstory , an undefeated feared superstar champion , a huge underdog , a strange location (not Vegas for a change ) and a shock win , Buster shocked the world that night !
Thank you for interviewing James "Buster" Douglas :). What he was able to achieve will never be taken away from him. "Buster" sure had to fight for everything he got, but ultimately will be remembered as the man who beat the "unbeatable" Mike Tyson and became the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the world in the process. While Mike Tyson remains my all-time favorite fighter, there is no question that he lost that night. The long count was a lame ass excuse. Deep down Mike knows this to be the case. His ego expected him to win with one punch, not Mike Tyson himself. Both men came to fight. It was a far more competitive contest than what it was made out to be by some of the commentators covering the fight. Despite popular belief, Mike showed a LOT of head movement in the opening round, often making "Buster" miss. He even backed Douglas into the ropes at one point to test his dominance. However, when James took Mike's best punches and hit him back even harder, it seemed to get the champion out of his rhythm and then Tyson began abandoning his bobbing and weaving, resorting to clinches instead. The bottom line is that Douglas took advantage of his superior reach advantage to get the job done and the rest is history. Mike battled on like a true champion regardless and showed a TON of heart in this fight. The fact that he even managed to get back to his feet following that brutal "Buster" finishing combination confirms it. And for the record, this historic fight was not won by KO. The referee actually waved it off before the count of 10 was reached, thus signalling a TKO stoppage instead. Mike was up at 9, just like "Buster", but he was clearly out on his feet at that point. I remember Mike stating in a later interview that he would basically have to be killed in order to stay down for good. Anyway, thanks again for sharing this interview. Keep it up and NEVER give up!
I have not been the biggest fan of this channel until tonight. This fight was the most important event i ever had with sports in my life having a deep effect on the way i saw things from there on out. This was the best interview with Buster Ive seen and you did a great great great job. He is a quiet man and you brought life into it. Asked all the questions i hoped for and just really appreciate it. Thank you. Keep on!
Beautiful display masterful art of boxing demonstrated by Buster Douglas.!I can watch that fight over and over .Buster stayed constantly punching look at him again. His breaks here and there were few compared to other opponents of Mike Tyson. The way Buster put his front foot down followed by the jab.Picture perfect.Beautiful right and left crosses!
For whatever it is worth, i believe personally this was the greatest fight of all time. I know that is insane, but there is something about it. Tyson was invincible and Douglas was not on anyones radar. My friends and i were 14 and home that night. It was the same night as NBA dunk contest and we had two tv’s on in two rooms, but the moment the fight began i was glued. I knew by the third or fourth round he may win. A nobody. In Tokyo. It was so eery quiet. I believe Larry Merchant was drunk or something, believing it would be a round or two. Watch it with that it mind and it one of the great comedies ive ever seen. But the fight changed my life. I never feared fear itself the same. By the time he was dominating we were screaming with disbelief. Nothing else mattered to us and we knew we would never forget this night and we still talk about it today. It was like taking LSD. A big moment. Boom! He loved his mom and lost her and beat the living shit out of the man himself. Mike Tyson was so great, is so great, but Buster Douglas is a Buddha. He lost his mom, won the fight and he was done. He is a legend. I love you Buster.
I watched this fight live with a friend on HBO. Buster had a look in his eyes that was different than Tyson's previous opponents, whom always looked scared or beaten before the first bell had even rung. I said out loud, this guy came to fight! Then I predicted early in the fight that I thought Buster would catch Tyson. My friend said, No f'ing way. Well, we know how the rest went. Greatest fight I've ever seen to this day and I've watched maybe a thousand of them. I still get the HOLY SHIT!! goose bumps, just thinking about it!!

BiG I believe Buster's relentlessness fueled by his mom's passing is what ultimately factored in his win against Tyson. Notice 6 months later he didn't fight the same way against Evander. It was like night and day but regardless props to Buster for doing thang 💯
I'm gonna love this! At the time I became at instant a Douglas fan! It's a pity that his career turned out to have just one really exceptional fight. But that was an all time great beauty! Thirty years later people still speak about it!

Salute to Mr.Douglas.. This man shook the world in 1990, and can't anyone take that away from him.
Buster was a real underdog. Love his back story too. He need a movie
They made good movies a hell of a lot worse than this story. Someone needs to make it.
I totally agree Bsha getting money.....they really need to turn Buster's story into a movie. I really believe that it would be a blockbuster hit.
Factz Buster Deserves a movie on his life
A movie would give him chance to reclaim some don kings quick fingeredness
Relax guy, Buster wasn't even that good when he best Tyson. People who understand boxing and Tyson's career know that Tyson beat himself that night. He showed up not interested, unmotivated, and barely even threw punches.
I remember where I was at 13 years old, sitting on my living room floor with my father when Douglas beat Tyson. Tyson was my absolute favorite athlete and I was crushed at 13. Hats off to Buster, great fight...shocked the world almost as much as he shocked me
Well said J.M I agree nice of you to give credit to Douglas for his performance that day I hope for nothing but the best for Douglas the rest of his life
Buster was a great fighter for sure, but the Mike he fought was not the Iron Mike we were watching destroy people before then.
That fight was not a fight but a massacre
Thank the lord this man is still alive to tell his story
Buster is the Real Deal, i felt his emotions when he talked about his Mom.
Real deal was Holyfield! .... Sorry, bad joke. Tokyo Douglas was amazing
of course, you're human- i can't imagine someone *not* getting emotional during that part of the interview.

Because mom did not go crying to the school about his son being bullied. Real old skool you push me I push back, you punch me I kick your butt.
I mean who doesn't love there mom anyways? Your mom and my mom ain't different it's there job to raise us and our job to love then
Most people do love there moms, why wouldn't anyone love their mom until the end

Could you imagine the significance of that belt? To wake up every morning, look up at it and think about what motivated you to get it, how you got it, and who you beat to get it?!
Truly, a story that should be retold as a part boxing history.
Its solidified in boxing lore. Buster Douglas made his mark no doubt.

13 seconds to be exact.
Yeah Mike got KO’d, but only if you count a touchdown after a team gets a fifth down, like the guy JR thinks. ✌️

Because a man can show his emotions and weakness to his mother. The father will just discipline and get you to overcome your fears or weaknesses. That’s why you need both parents when you are raising a child.
Buster is so respectful. I love how he speaks about his Dad. Its so sad seeing him still crying about losing his mum.
Buster is a well read dude. You sometimes forget that it's a boxer being interviewed. I think he will be a great mentor for the youth.

Such a great story! Buster Douglas always was pictured like a nice guy, watching this confirms it!

He didn’t knockout McCall. He won a decision. McCall was never KO’d. He had that one weird stoppage against Lennox Lewis but that was it
Best fight I ever saw, Buster seems like a genuinely good person!

@@george45620 I love Tyson but Buster dominated Tyson that night, dominated.
Top respect to Buster. I'm a fighter and present one face to the World, but seeing his emotion talking about his poor mothers passing, it got to me!
After all that He get KO by Holyfield!! Buster had a good nite!! Tyson had a off nite!!
After watching this, it's clear that Douglas is still one of the 'good guys.'
Respect to you, Champ!
If anyone is interested in getting the in-depth story of who Buster Douglas was as a fighter, and a man, up to the Tyson fight, and conversely the same on Tyson up to the same point, read the book The Last Great Fight by Joe Layden.

His story should be a movie!
After this interview, I am very impressed with this man "James Buster Douglas" !
Very insightful. Great interview Bet-David
As was the premise of "Rocky" , if "good" works really hard, it can hang with greatness. Especially if greatness is off. And that was the case here. But beyond that, props to Douglas because he really did fight Tyson perfectly. He broke the code. After that, it was easy for others top follow suit.
Good man right there ! Don't just the speed of the words, just listen to what he's saying.. Peace
I cried when he talked about his mom. Dam that must of been really tuff. Well at least he took it out on Mike.
Me too..I always do cry ..
I love underdogs. The Buster Douglas story is special. A great story, a great man. Someone needs to make a movie.
This was a most excellent guest. Thank you.

I believe Buster's relentlessness fueled by his mom's passing is what ultimately factored in his win against Tyson. Notice 6 months later he didn't fight the same way against Evander. It was like night and day but regardless props to Buster for doing thang 💯

I like this man, he is real, he is emotional, he loves.
Buster was a bad dude! Nobody was beating him that night. Great jab! Also was a great basketball player! Great respect! a True Champ!!!
God Bless...Buster, May a soul rest in peace...I'm really took by to what you had to say about your Mom you loved her man...You're a great guy❤
Superb interview. You are the best interviewer, man.
I don't think anyone can do an interview like Patrick. He could interview a rock and hold people's interest.
I'm gonna love this! At the time I became at instant a Douglas fan! It's a pity that his career turned out to have just one really exceptional fight. But that was an all time great beauty! Thirty years later people still speak about it!
Douglas was brilliant that night his footwork his Jab his combination punching his control of distancing was awesome
BUSTER DOUGLAS your MUM raised a beautiful loving humble man, you definitely made your parents proud, may GOD give you happiness an keep you on top enjoying life!!! AMEN 🙏!!!! 😎🦋🐝
He's not really that humble, he still talks about Tyson as he was a bum and doesn't realize that he caught Tyson at the right time, when his life was in shambles. Buster still won but, we all know the truth
Douglas is a quality human being - when asked about King, he let you know how he felt without launching into character attacks - just 'not good'. A gentleman.
Buster Douglas - God bless you , you remain an inspiration to me.
