I like you the most when you play KATANA AMP. Thank you for the great sound of the Stratocaster’s single coil . From Japan.
That little ditty on the intro has become one of my favorites. Sounds great!
Man the tones you get from that... Love your playing too. Sometimes I forget what the subject was listening to you play. ☺
Now try to download the software... TFU
Yes, I am sure he's much better than many artists he records..
man im so mad i bought the MKII this year and this came out. These tones are heaven!
Brilliant, Paul.
What a fantastic tone!
I recently got a Katana Gen3 212, as a surprise gift from my lovely wife and some Friends for Life.
The first thing I did was costume this tone!
I do not get tired of it!
Got your name on it: Paul's Tone!
Thank you and when you have some good ones for acoustic and Pearl Jam... I'll be first in line!
Cheers, Cadaval
Great video brother! Thx for taking the time. Just ordered the Gen 3 and can’t wait to dig in.
BTW, the Strat tone is perfect! 😲
Awesome! Thank you!
I've always added something in front of the clean, when I had the mk1 and now the mk2. Currently enjoying the TC Zeus or the NUX 65 just to give it something like this new pushed voice, and it gives similar results.
The Katana (especially the new Gen3 with that Pushed Clean amp) sounds SOOO good on TH-cam (no matter if it's micced up or direct with an IR).. it really seems way too good to be true, especially at that price. Not only it sounds incredible and very tube-like, but it looks like it's just as dynamic (players seem to be able to play both clean whispered notes and strong screaming one quite effortlessly). I know it has been a debate since the very first Katana, but are they truly that good, like a very good modeller? I'm not really talking about the speaker or the ''air-pushing'' compared to a real tube amp.. but more about the actual ''amp modelling'' part, in terms of how it responds dynamically. Cause I'm a NAM and TONEX user, and this is the most important part to me. Based on what I hear and see on TH-cam, it seems incredibly legit, which is kinda hard to believe.. what's the catch?! If i use a TONEX pedal in the FX LOOP of the 100w for instance, and use a comparable ''amp only'' capture, will I notice a big difference in sound and feel, compared to the stock amps of the Katana? Or how far from the GT1000 it is. Again, not talking about functions and features.... just amps tone and response.
Also, this is by far the most relic neck i've even seen! That black ''eyeliner'' around the frets is INTENSE!
Good video👍 It needs an adjustable tube sag control. The bloom button doesn't cut it.
Great sounds Paul. 😁👍
Many thanks!
I just bought this amp a few weeks ago. Thank you for this great video.
Enjoy!
@@TheStudioRats Ditto for me to as well! - just received a 100 Head w/ the 5" speaker.
I have a 72 Deluxe and a reissue VibroVerb but there are both pretty heavy and need pedal boards to get wide a range of tones
(These amps are becoming more like an investment anymore)
I've only played with the Katana for some 30 mins and it hasn't the tonal quality of the clean output of the Fenders but this post has shown me how to get closer to those sonorities! - Thanks.
Thanks Paul for your GREAT Katana videos. Initially I find the Pushed a bit harsh and usually only use Clean as base but I will experiment with it a bit more. I like the Light Compressor on cleaner sounds but the Orange is not bad on some when using a litter more boost.
I have the same gen 3 and it's awesome....Using in home studio, completely blown away...where can we get a proper stereo cable, as my inset cables didn't work,
fab video and awesome sound
Once again, you've convinced me. As you said, what's the point of getting expensive amps, especially with today's technology...
This was an amazing lesson and what a tone you made !! Thanks for this!
Cheers Louis
You managed to make it sound pretty good
That sounds so beautiful
My lovely mk2 head is just 2 years old. I will wait at least for the gen 4. But Paul is definitely a great instructor on sound ❤
This is more of an observation comment. The pushed channel in my experience likes passive single coil pickups. Jumping to a humbuckker tends to muddy up the sound. The Katana series in general sounds better with passive pickups, again in my experience. That's interesting because the Nextone amps don't show that strong preference. I just returned the Katana because it didn't play well with my gear. Hopefully that helps others.
I've just bought a Katana Gen 3, great tutorial
Enjoy it
Bought mine today. Delivery in a little over a week. I have the Line 6 Helix LT and Cat 60. I’m keeping all three!
Great Video Paul. I can watch them for hours. Maybe you can create a 'Pushed Tone' for us MK II users😀
Nice demo … Nice licks also. (Long time since I have been in on a jam, so thank you).
🎸👨🏼⚕️. 🫶✌️♾️.
What a beautiful strat 😍
Excellent as always, you are a real student of the instrument. I would be all over one of these if I didn’t already own a GT-1000
what do you monitor your gt through?
@@justinTime077
I use a Fender GTX 100 as a powered cab. It works really well with GT-1000. Best of both worlds !
thanks for bringing the heat Pole!
What’s the specs on that wonderful strat? I’m in love!
I do like this pushed amp and the patch Paul created. But, Boss needs to give the compressor its own block instead of putting it in the FX and Mod bucket. So annoying :(
You made it sound great
Honestly, at first glance this sounds 95% like your Amplified Nation (which sounds great).
Katana friends, please go to 5:50. Paul has set a few reverb settings, but at the top, under the reverb knob we read "OFF". Later in the video the same thing happens with the delay and the compressor.
I downloaded this TSR Pushed patch for my Artist gen3, but most of Paul's settings don't show up in Tone Studio; wrong cab resonance, wrong delay etc. What's going on here?
How do you change the solo volume level? Also how to change the delay switch on the Fc Ga ex into a solo on and off? Thanks. You have been a great help!
Sounds really good! Great video as usual. What pickups are in your Strat?
They are ancho pablano
@@TheStudioRats Oh goodness those cost more than my Strat... haha. Welp! 😵
Hi Paul.
Beautiful tones as always!
I have a Katana Artist MKll 100W Head.
Apart from the new ‘Pushed’ amp and the option to connect via Bluetooth, most features being demoed in the GEN3 videos are already available on my MKll Artist, (variation, cab resonance, contour, solo etc.).
What are your thoughts on whether it is worth upgrading from Artist MKll to Artist GEN3?
Will you be doing a comparison once the Artist GEN3 comes out in July?
Thanks as always for your time in creating this awesome content.
🤘😎🎸
Hi, I feel the gen3 is a big upgrade to the sound. There will be an artist review when it’s released.
I've got to ask the question Paul, how do we get a pushed tone on the Katana 2's?
Hope all is well with you gents.
Turn up the gain on the clean channel, but it’s not the same as the new gen 3
I tend to turn the gain right down on the brown channel and maybe back off the volume a little depending on the guitar.
I'm just curious, can't you get the pushed sound just by tweaking the MkII's eq and boosts/gain?
Yes. I think you would be able to closely match it. But, that;s apart from the other new features and enhancements found in the MkIII.
I just ordered a Gen 3. If I don't sound this good when I plug in, I will be slightly perturbed.
its about 80% of the way to sounding like a really really good tube amp, which for the price is pretty amazing.
What gauge do you use for strings
How come I dont hear any single coil pickup hum? mine always has a very slight one. I have a boss katana mkii, its not the amp but my 73 am vii strat hum. Please help😃😃
hi, Paul! in the video about katana mark 2 you said that adding a treble booster and a little compressor to the clean channel makes the sound on the verge of breaking. And it really works. How can you compare the new push channel and the clean channel + treble boost in katana 2? is it similar in feel and sound? thank you !
@@rockblues9443 it’s a similar thing, but the GEN3 has taken the Katana to another level in my opinion
@@TheStudioRats ok
@@TheStudioRats ok. …
What about the crunch and lead channels? Better than they were in general? I am mainly interested in the push and lead channel. I'm not interested in recording and other stuff. Is it worth changing because of ni!? Or is it possible to use katana 2 with variations to make yourself a good tone on the verge of breaking and a solo sound? Using a clean channel? I always watch your channel and trust your opinion. I think it's not biased and honest. Thanks for attention.
Sounds nice doesn’t it.
Too soon to start wondering what Gen 4 will bring? 😂
CAN YOU USE THE BOSS TONE STUDIO WHEN THE AMP IS CONNECTED VIA HEADPHONE OUT?
I’ve got a Katana 50 MKII. Might just sell mine and get the III. Is Boss going to release an official app on iOS for the Katana? The app for the Air doesn’t work 100% with the regular Katana.
Boss/Roland has great marketing skills.
Katana Go just been discontinued might dent their reputation?
I wish they had made it was possible to engage the speaker while going out in stereo thorough the headphones out for live performance.
Agreed
This guy make a scrappy amp sound great no matter what it is great recordings
Nice playing as always and great breakdown thank you
Thank you kindly!
Paul, do you think the upgraded speaker in the new Katana 50 EX gen 3 is a worthy upgrade over the standard 50 gen 3?
I haven’t tried an ex but if it’s the waza speaker then yes.
Where does the effect loop position tho?
What size and make strings you using Paul thanks.
10-46 NYXL
Would this sound and perform better or equal too a Marshall Dsl40cr combo for home play ?
personally I believe it would.
@@TheStudioRats I played both the new 100 watt gen 3 Katana and the Marshall dsl40cr and after 30 min of back and forth the Marshall came home with me . Katana only had one good channel which was the clean channel. The Marshall was full of usable full sounding tones . Thanks . Love your you tube channel .
Can you use the Gen 3 100 as the master and the 100 MKii as the slave and run them in stereo?
Yep
Thats great!!!!!🫶
I've enjoyed & downloaded many Katana patches from Paul at The Studio Rats. One thing I am very aware of is that these videos involve running the Katana into a DAW, suggesting home/studio use rather than live. It would be good therefore if we could have more patches/TH-cam videos dedicated to gig use. They'd probably sound crap at home volume but I'd welcome them...
What’s the song in the intro you always play?
It’s a bit like Drifting in the dark by the studio rats. You can listen on iTunes etc or it’s on youtube
It’s really good.
Just got one of these.
I wish I understood half of what you did 😂
If you’ve watched the Andertons iconic Blind Amp Test... you will know that the best thing you can do with a Katana is... get a VOX.
By reducing the high cut you are making it brighter. You said because the effect is bright you can reduce the high cut. It's the other way around. If the effect or sound in general was dull... High cut on amps like voxes are different to presence controls. . Work in opoosites
No Joe, high cut reduces the high frequencies.
@@TheStudioRatsyes. So Joe is correct. Reducing the high cut makes it brighter.
I think you are both getting confused with high cut and high pass. Reducing high pass technically reduces bass perceived as brighter. High cut is exactly as it says cutting highs. I’ve been a studio engineer for years before doing the studio rats channel.
@@TheStudioRats We agree on what a high cut does. All of us. I believe the confusion lies in how it's being applied. As Joe points out, you say that it's too bright so you're reducing the high cut. That would make it brighter. That's what joe said and he's correct.
Increasing high cut would make it less bright. Reducing high cut would make it more bright.
You said it was too bright so were "reducing high cut". That's obviously not correct.
@@iancurrie8844 I believe with a "cut" it's about the threshold. If you increase the high cut you let more highs through. If you reduce it you cut more highs above that threshold.
Was that Ride - Howard Hughes in the intro?
It should have the pushed model in it since day one. It bugs me that all these modelling amps have one clean channel that is just hi fi clean, then *maybe* one decent dirty model, and then the rest are a bunch of frigging metal models.
why my gen3 sounds totally different than yours?(worse )my guitar is fender ultra
♥️🎶🎵👍🎶🎵🙏🎸🎵🎶😎
Wow these relic jobs are getting outta hand 😂
I agree. It looks completely ridiculous.
If the wear isn't from playing its dumb imo like buying 70$ jeans with pre-cut holes
Bought the 100W Gen 3, the Bluetooth module, and the GA-FC. The amp sounds great - BUT - the GA-FC is for a MKII amp. You have to put stickers on it so the switches are labeled properly for the Gen 3, - AND - When I tried to connect through Bluetooth so I could use the BTS, I received a message that my brand new amp has an older firmware so I had to do an update. WHAT?? The amp just came out!!! Why in the hell would a brand new amp be shipped with out-of-date firmware? I know the answer to that, but will withhold comment. Now I not only have to mess with stickers, but I have to load drivers onto my computer, buy a USB C cable, and do a firmware update before I can even use all the features. Fortunately my computer has a USB C port. Otherwise I'd have to buy a computer too. What a pain in the ass. C'mon Boss, quit pissing in my pool.
It’s just a regular usb port the usb c is on the amp
too much bass
As a happy BOSS Katana 112 MK1 owner, this is one of the best amps in this range, "Sarcasm engaged: the range of guitarists who want to have a ten thousand bucks tone at 700$!! Sarcasm disengaged", so I feel pretty sad to not be able to buy a MK3 Kit that gives me all the MK3 features but without to buy the whole amp... I mean a kit for the bluetooth and some extra buttons for the new features of the MK2 and now those on the MK3 for around 150 bucks should have been a smart move from BOSS!? Maybe a good option to not have to buy an other Katana 100... Or maybe not🤔
Same, seems the upgrades are mostly in the software side. I’m mk2 owner but yeah.
