That grain pattern does, indeed make it instantly recognizable. Back in 1980 when I was a starving college student in Chicago with serious vintage guitar fever there was so little solid info out there. I remember seeing that advertisement photocopied somewhere and thought "That grain pattern is so unique, I wonder where that guitar could be now?" Fantastic!

@@anthonyc1883 I was managing a retail drug store and was miserable and wasn't a fan of counting pills, dealing with customer service, and babysitting kids who didn't care about work ethics. I met a nice younger woman and fell in love. Honestly, I was mentally ill of the college scene and just plain lazy (loss of interest). I wanted to learn guitar and bought a dean flying v (one of the earlier ones) and just couldn't COMPREHEND how Randy Rhoads and Dimebag Darrell played..... And once again gave up. I love the beautiful guitars and how each one is unique. That's what brought me here to Norms Channel....not to mention Lemmos style. But yes, my fever wasn't all that great for guitars, but I learned to appreciate them and the artists that played them. My favorite all time guitarists are Page, SRV, Trower, and even a little Blackmore, Angus can riff as well. That's just a few.

Back in the early 90s, I was a teenager, a drummer and totally into fusion. I had a gig with this guitarist who was a member of the wrecking crew back in the 1960s. Anyway, we performed live with no rehearsal and I knew next to nothing about guitar. He had the usual popular guitars of the day. Mainly a PRS. They all sounded decent. He then picked up this old telecaster with all the paint worn off and my jaw hit the floor when I heard it. I asked him about it afterwards and he told me it was a broadcaster. I politely hinted that he should get rid of his other guitars 😆. I’ll never forget that. That guitar was pure rock & roll. It was magic. I got an education that day.

Warmest pure tone ever . That tele rings every note in the chord evenly, and the string spacing looks spot on from string to string and from string to frettboard . Guitar of the decade . Santa help . I will be good forever .

  • @jimbonacum8917

If memory serves when the selector is in the front it is the neck pickup with the dark circuit. In the middle it is the neck pickup without the capacitor and in the back position it is both pickups and the tone pot acts as a blend so you can mix the signal from both pickups. At least I think that was what Mark said when he demoed Billy Gibbons' Broadcaster about 2 years ago.

It is the guitar of my dreams and I have always wondered how the reissues measure up to it.

And they've done very little to augment, let along improve upon, this original design in 71 years. Is there another mass-manufactured product you can say that about? I certainly can't think of one. Life goes on and things are changing (seemingly for the worse) every day, but it's comforting to know that in 2020 a Telecaster is still a Telecaster. To me, it represents America at its best.

People are asking questions here in the replies that should be addressed.
1). At first Leo called his guitar the Esquire but soon changed it to Broadcaster. After a letter from Gretsch notifying them that they were already using the name Broadkaster on their drums, Fender started cutting the word off of the headstock decals hence the (nick)name (which came much later) No-caster. Many people just called it the Fender guitar. Finally they renamed it the Telecaster, as television was jus becoming popular with the public.
2). The Dark Circuit was intended to simulate a bass. The Precision bass did not come out for another four years.
3). The Gilmour #0001 Strat was one of a very few special guitars made up for a trade show (Terry Kath had #0003). The Stratocaster was already on the market at the time and already had its own numbering system which started at #0100 (the first Strat S/N’s were stamped on the plastic tremolo spring cover. Strat serial #s were soon moved to the neck plates).
Remember this was the first solid body wood guitar (outside of Merle Travis’ 1947 Bigsby and a very few Slingerland guitars made in the 1930s). All the other guitar manufacturers thought it was a ridiculous idea at first. But they took off very quickly and became very popular, then all the makers had to have one of their own.
