I picked up my Bessa-R about four years ago for the sweet price of $110 and I immediately fell in love with it, it was my second LTM rangefinder but my first upper end model (I was using my Zorki 4 at the time) and afterwards I ended up with a few FEDs three Leicas and a Canon model 7 but it's still one of my favorites. Absolutely cannot go wrong with the Bessa-R series. LTM Gang all day.
Had both a Bessa r and an Olive R2 (sexy colour scheme) but sold my soul for an m6. Genuinely miss the R2 sometimes with its unique features. Great video dude!
I have a Zeiss Ikon ZM and a Voitglander R4A, I actually prefer them over my Leica M6, faster shutter speed, lighter body, larger and brighter rangefinder, aperture priority mode; also somewhat cheaper compares to Leica bodies.
@@GlaciaDay had a hexar RF for a while, such a beaty and a joy to use, but sold it because i realized i dont enjoy focusing with a rangefinder unfortunatly.. hurt my soul a lil bit to sell it!
I have the Canon P and it is a great little shooter. Heavy because like all 50's and 60's camera it is seemingly made from old battleship armor. The Canon lenses for the system are really good. I just added a Voigtlander VC Meter II to the cold shoe or bring my Pentax 1 degree spot meter. I wish the rangefinder patch was brighter but honestly that hasn't been that much of a problem. I've looked at the Bessa R but just can't bring myself to pull the trigger as my Canon P works so well, at least for me.
Could be worse I have a canon 7 I picked it over the P because I like being able to switch frame lines instead of all of them there all at once the only con for that camera is not having a coldshoe and since the light meter doesn’t work on mine I basically have a keks light meter attached to the top via some Velcro tape

My Canon 50mm f1.8 LTM lens was also offset on my Leica M8 and M9 using an LTM/M adapter. I don't know for sure but I've been told for some reason, all of the Canon lenses do the same thing. Sometimes I wonder why Voigtlander didn't come out with a digital Bessa.
I got the exact same setup, nice (Bessa R + Canon 50mm F1.8)! I just bought a voigtlander 15mm F4.5 super wide heliar to upgrade my system, cant wait to try it out

I have my first goog rangefinder for two month (a Kodak Retina IIC (the big C is important)) and I am really getting in the rangefinder way of shooting. I already looking into an upgrade...
Are you having issues with it? I’m sure it’s threaded properly. If the images come out fine also the thread mount lens on a thread, mountain body wood most likely seat correctly.
One of the big thing is really love about the M5 is its spot meter. The meter of the M6 was always a bit to broad for me. The meter or the Bessa sounds great.
That‘s the reason I‘ve been hunting an Epson R-D1 for way too long… Never got one though. But I still had the chance to get my hands on one for quite some time, and I love both, the Bessa R and the R-D1
My Canon 50/1.8 LTM mounts the exact same. The middle of the scale is around 1-2 o’clock. Looks janky, but it works with the placement of the focus tab/lock deal. That focus throw is sooooo looooong though, expecially compared to the Voigtlander.
@@BadFlashes Same here, and from experimentation it doesn't affect focus from what I can tell. The canon LTM lenses seem to be like the soviet ones where they're just a hair off the Leica specs so throwing them without calibration on seems to get you a bit of back focus. Fuck though I really want an R so damn hard, at least they're somewhat cheap out of Japan hahaha

Oh the Bessas. Was really torn between an R2/R2M in olive green and an M6 back then and picked the latter, though was a really close race. Ace video and don't worry, you got me cracking a smile with that bessa camera joke, even if it's just because it sounds like the German word for better. 🙋♂
Caleb, I will say that as someone with an LTM rangefinder (Canon 7), all the M-mount bros buying up LTM glass to use via adapters kinda chaps my ass. It makes it very difficult to find options for certain lenses that are both in good shape, and affordable. I found it particularly difficult to find a good-condition LTM 35mm lens option that wasn't $250 or more. I ended up choosing a Jupiter 12 because I could not justify spending $250 for a Canon 35mm f/2.8 or $300-350 for a 35mm f/2.5 Color Skopar.
Well I do get that… I initially had some problems. Unfortunately it’s the way things go at this point when looking for alternatives or cheaper options. I prefers M on M myself

Bessa R series are based on economy SLR Cosina chassis. I used one R exclusively as daily camera for one year or so. It worn out badly outside and shutter blades were showing some worn out as well. Despite this, R is the best from the R series, IMO. I have got new R2M later on and it was just bigger camera and nothing else, except M mount. But since all Rs are same SLR economy chassis, quality and handling is nowhere near Leica M series. If you are fast shooter.
The R is a pretty great deal for an LTM camera. The R2 (and other M mount versions) used to great leica alternatives back when they were under $800. The build quality just isnt there, and for $1200+ dollars, it's worth it to just save for Leica M2/3/4.
I need to know how many miles that LS400 has !! I love them so much , the fact that the 1UZ V8 is so damn bulletproof I play a fun game of guess the mileage on LS400’s with friends when we find them on marketplaces
Picked up a range recently. The petri didn't work out so got a FED 3 with a jupiter 50mm lens. Loving it so far. It''ll hold me over until I find me a Bessa R money. Would love 1/1000 on the shutter but, shooting with a range has gotten me out of shooting f2.8 so much. f8 and f11 life now. lol An internal meter would be legit as well. Great video as always duder.
Gotta turn in the hipster photog card if you say anything is a solid alternative to a Leica. I generally either a Zeiss Ikon or a Minolta CLE for a rangefinder with Leica glass. I prefer the Minolta mostly, but it only has 28, 40, and 90mm frame lines :\. Not the worst, I love 40mm the most more or less, but the Zeiss having 28, 35, 50, and 85 give me 3 I love and 28 is there, I guess. I get eye squints and dark stares when I say I prefer the Zeiss and Minolta over Leica bodies for most of the same lenses (the 40mm for the Minolta that is basically welded to mine is supposedly made by Leica in Germany, but it uses a different filter and stuff so who knows, and I can't be bothered to research). All that said, I pretty much only shoot film with my Mamiya 645 Pro TL these days. I love rangefinders but having a bag with a few backs with different films loaded in different sizes (120, 35, and Pano 35) all in one system in a formfactor I love (box/modular systems with waist-level viewfinders with the option of a solid prism finder) that I can swap between mid-roll is hard to beat. I do usually bring the Zeiss or Minolta as a backup because you never know, but that's pretty much my entire kit minus my Olympus Pen half frame collection.
Minolta Dynax/Maxxum/Alpha 9 still reigns supreme with 1/12000th mechanical shutter, not that I’ve ever used it. Like a divers watch you only ever wear in the shower… it’s nice to know it could if you needed to.

Bessa R(2)'s are great shooters, no doubt!! But with a Canon Serenar 50/1,8, You, Sir, can go full circle and have a Canon P, or according to CameraQuest the best; Canon L1 or VL! Voigtlander of this class is after all a plastic Cosina.

Yeah, I bought an R new from Cameraquest with a new color 35mm lens for like 450.00 in 2006, I regretfully sold it in 2009 for 500.00 and today that same kit in mint condition would be over 800 bucks. Those were the days!!!
@@BadFlashes Maybe a pinhole lens adaptor would make a great time lapse with that shutter speed. I saw a video recently where a German photographer, Karin Majoka, did a one year solar time lapse with a pinhole and the take aways were interesting.

My Bessa R jammed on me two time during different trips... Maybe I was too fast of a shooter.

Minolta Dynax/Maxxum/Alpha 9 still reigns supreme with 1/12000th mechanical shutter, not that I’ve ever used it. Like a divers watch you only ever wear in the shower… it’s nice to know it could if you needed to.

Bessa R(2)'s are great shooters, no doubt!! But with a Canon Serenar 50/1,8, You, Sir, can go full circle and have a Canon P, or according to CameraQuest the best; Canon L1 or VL! Voigtlander of this class is after all a plastic Cosina.

Yeah, I bought an R new from Cameraquest with a new color 35mm lens for like 450.00 in 2006, I regretfully sold it in 2009 for 500.00 and today that same kit in mint condition would be over 800 bucks.
Those were the days!!!

@@BadFlashes Maybe a pinhole lens adaptor would make a great time lapse with that shutter speed. I saw a video recently where a German photographer, Karin Majoka, did a one year solar time lapse with a pinhole and the take aways were interesting.
I had this before. It is awful! The metering is off. Everything just awful, not saying it’s gonna be awful for you too! Anyone reading this.. DO NOT BUY THAT CAMERA.
