The Akatsuki were the most powerful ninjas in the world but in the end they were just pawns for Madara to use towards his master plan. Itachi was the only one who didn't fall for his crap but Itachi wasn't really a true Akatsuki since he was just spying on them the whole time.
i hated them at first, but it completely dissapeared after seeing each one of them's sad past, they can be considered heroes cuz they really wanted peace n love to flow between shinobi's, no greed,no more clans fighting other clans for dominance, but they did it the wrong way, bcos by using massive genjutsu to control ppl's mind, you are not helping them that way but instead means you are forcing them to do something against their will, but i cant blame them tho, their painful past made them lost hope in everything in the world they lived in. they remind me of Light yagami of Death Note! So, Kakashi kills Kakuzu's first heart, blasting a hole clean through him. Couple of episodes later and Kakuzu's cloak is off and the undershirt is completely devoid of a huge hole. Well done animators. 10/10.
