    Thanks for such a detailed video. Two questions really haunt me . First as you said is the fact that the ISP knows that we are using Tor browser making us suspicious in some manner . Secondly, people at the exit node of Tor will obviously be tracking the information we present like filling out forms etc. ( as you have mentioned in the video).

    • @raymikado
      @raymikado 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, good catch, I think we're still compromised along the way. I recently watched a great video suggesting that even if we use some words out of the ordinary 1000 English words that could be a signal to track you down. I think you could minimize that by using a combination of many elements such as Tor, VPN and Tails.

    Hi, I appreciate how you thoroughly explain everything a newbie "must know" about TOR. I am new in TOR, and a big advocate of Privacy and also Safety. Being said that, it concerns me how a great tool like TOR can be taking advantage of by "bad people", if we all using this to avoid our Government spying on everything we do, I hope that everyone will value and preserve the Freedom that software such as TOR offers, of course, the world isn't about that, wouldn't it? Great Job!

    Pretty good for beginners. My only recommendation is if you want to take it up a notch, try learning a Linux distribution in a virtualbox until you're comfortable enough to switch over and use it as your main OS. Debian would be the best and simplest in my opinion. You can have much more security by hardening your configurations in sysctrl, iptables, and using access control implementation such as apparmor. Being open sourced, it also has the advantage of being patched much quicker than proprietary software. Also Debian (and most other linux distros) don't collect telemetry data on you like Windows does. Regarding VPNs, in Debian you can configure the OpenVPN and use that instead of a service's built-in app, which will help reduce the possibility of a buggy app or security exploit.

  • @bennattj
    @bennattj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Let's clarify something, "best practice" is _not_ to trust anything from the internet (or TH-cam). This guy isn't "wrong" (as long as you download from a reputable site) because most third parties aren't going to go through the hassle of creating a "reputable" certificate (e.g. paying Microsoft to "host" their certificate). I don't understand why this video even mentions certificates because it seems to be a clinic on why certificates shouldn't be trusted.

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a bit harsh. If Cryptographic signing keys are pointless, why do developers even go to the trouble to provide them? There are more rigorous ways to verify signing keys that are beyond the scope of this video. But the Tor project recommends verifying their installer packages:
      www.torproject.org/docs/verifying-signatures.html.en
      Don't take my word for it, take theirs. After all, they are the ones providing the software. I'm just demonstrating the "how to" for people who are interested.

    • @bennattj
      @bennattj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, certificates are excellent for verifying identity, but they're only as good as the source of the certificate. When developers use them, they go through a trusted Certificate Authority. This is why a browser sometimes gives you a warning that this _isn't_ a trusted certificate (just as your shell gave you the same warning, until you told it not). Anytime you get that warning, unless you know _why_ you're getting that warning you shouldn't proceed (so in this case, you're getting that warning because you know Torr Project didn't bother to register with a Certificate Authority...although I don't understand why they wouldn't).

    What about what many persons suggest, starting from Tails USB and then using Tor that is included in it ?

  • @Erarnitox
    @Erarnitox 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you have forgotten just one thing. When you connect to your VPN you do connect to the vps with your own ip address. You have to assume that they do keep logs. So they can track you that way. A solution to this would be to configure tor as a Proxy for the vpn. But for me using a vm which uses the tortilla network adapter works quite well this way you are effectively using a vm which uses tor as vpn. which leaves you with the two problems you have mentioned. But on top of that you can buy a VPS for just a small amount and have your own vpn which you can really trust to not have logs and use that to mask that you are using tor. The good thing about using tortilla is that you dont have to worry too much about screensize and flash since screensize will just return the screensize of your vm and flash is only dangerous because it likes to connect directly but since your using totilla adapter there is no way around tor making it safe to use flash.

    • @CryptoDad

      It is much easier if you skip the verification process and just download the installer and run it. Doing verification is complicated, that is why I made this video. The first time I encountered signature files I was mystified. I could not find any straightforward "how to" on the Internet. So I decided to try and present the process to help others.

    Antifa Hunter, I really like your advanced tips, but tails is very technically challenging and inconvenient to use. Most people can barley install windows on a normal PC hard drive, let alone a standalone version of Linux on a USB. In addition, I have to take issue on your constant implication that I am advising people to do something illegal or avoid law enforcement. I am not. This video demonstrates how to achieve a REASONABLE amount privacy and anonymity in order to avoid tracking and cookies. If you continue to advise my viewers on ways to avoid law enforcement, I will be forced to hide your comments on my channel.

    At 26:17 you say that, in order to prevent the possibility that the VPN provider reveal your log infos after being subpoena, since you created an account with a gift card paid in cash, the VPN provider really have no identifying information attached to you, EXCEPT YOUR REAL IP ADDRESS when you have connected to the VPN !

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the idea would be to create the account from a different computer at a coffee shop to ensure maximum security. Also when using the VPN, You would only connect When you're not at home . That's pretty extreme . In the real world , If you've been targeted they will find you eventually . Creating the account from a gift card though, does make it more difficult for you be identified, but not impossible.

    Hey Rex, how do you set up a cryptocurrency account without compromise your real ID? I'm pretty sure that no matter what precaution you take bu using Tor, bying a gift certificate to pay for a VPN service or installing TAILS, I think government or hackers could still track you down when you do a transaction using cryptocurrency. Do you know what I mean?

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A very tricky proposition. If you are worried about your privacy, you might try some of the privacy based coins like Monero or Verge. But there is really no legal way to open up an exchange account without revealing your ID. So you would have to purchase the coins in the open, but after that, you can spend them privately.

    • @raymikado
      @raymikado 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the reply though, but your valuable video is concentrating on the anonymity issue to the point of buying a gift certificate from Toys R Us, far away from home in order to keep concealing your ID. So I think you're compromised along the way, somewhere between transactions. Just a thought!

      If it is purchased in the open, you can NOT spend that privately, it is connected to you anyway.

    I love the part in the video where you do the VPN installation routine and the screen is filled with your face instead of what you are doing on the screen. Classic. Maybe... stop doing tutorials.

    What is difference in anonymity on tor and vpn? I cant find difference

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VPN provide privacy. No one can see what you are doing. But they know it is you. Tor provides Anonymity no one on the other end knows who you are if you use it right.

    What is the point of verifying a download with an untrusted key? You just verified from the site you downloaded from, that it was from the site you downloaded from.

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @bennattj
      @bennattj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, certificates are excellent for verifying identity, but they're only as good as the source of the certificate. When developers use them, they go through a trusted Certificate Authority. This is why a browser sometimes gives you a warning that this isn't a trusted certificate (just as your shell gave you the same warning, until you told it not). Anytime you get that warning, unless you know why you're getting that warning you shouldn't proceed (so in this case, you're getting that warning because you know Torr Project didn't bother to register with a Certificate Authority...although I don't understand why they wouldn't).

    • @CryptoDad
      @CryptoDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right. They are not using a certificate authority. They are using public/private key cryptography to sign the code and then making their public signing key available. There are ways to verify that the signatures are valid. the most secure would be to meet the developer in person, and verify his signature fingerprint, but that would be impractical. The next best thing would be a "circle of trust". Here is a relevant discussion of some of the methods for verifying that a a key is valid and not a forgery. (this is concerns GnuPG software the principle is the same)

    The current Tor Devs Key 4E2C6E8793298290 isnt found with GNU, I have hit a brick wall :-(
    Edit - I was able to grab it using the commands on Tor's page but the valid Sub keys dont match what I have. I really just want to install and hope for the best but then whats the point in any of this

      Trainspotter82, so I’m planning on doing a Tor video today and I just tested that key, and it does work. Although it did take a few moments for it to actually download. Perhaps yours timed out? And I’m using the GNU privacy assistant key manager. I’m going to server and choosing retrieve keys and then pasting that key in there. If you notice on the signing page that the developer team has one key but there are also other keys you could try like Mike Perry, Georg Koppen or Nicholas Vigier et Cetera

      Yeah Mike's downloaded I just didnt know if I could use it, thanks for getting back to me, will try again, strange it dosent work but mikes doe's, oh well, the joys lol

      ps I think I may have downloaded it recently and thats why it cant find it because I already have it? Just a thought and the fact that I cant see it alongside the Debian one I got yesterday means it probably isnt related. I am using GNU, i put 4E2C6E8793298290 into......#..#.....@?@?@?@ I was doing it as I was typing and it worked this time, maybe the server was down or something,Thanks again Crypto Dad :-D

      It's wise to keep your reading habits private . Really no point in trying to hide when you log into your Facebook account though . But they don't like it when people try to use Tor to view their website that's for sure
