    On point Jurgen! This is basically my thoughts on it too mate. It sounds ridiculous but at this point my heart jumps with joy when I buy a new release and find out its black vinyl. If its not, I feel like ive bought a novelty gimmick suitable for a five year old. I know its the music that matters but still...I wish this trend would fvk right off!
    Well said mate. Cheers!

    Couldn't agree with u more. This vinyl trend is absolutely insane. I almost stopped of buying records nowdays. Theres people buying vinyl that they don't listen, just to say they own it, which is ridiculous. And that same supposed collectors pay high prices. And something i don't understand is why buy a reissue if the original is cheaper. I mean, theres tons of vinyl reissues that in a few months the prices go soooo damn high. I personally don't like reissues, and i don't have in my collection. All originals. Cheers 🍻

    I've seen KISS, MAIDEN, METALLICA and MOTORHEAD albums these days costing 10 times what you could have picked them up in the 90s for. They aren't even rare. Insanity.

    I thought Roger had turned German when you were ranting about coloured vinyl! 😂😂😂 I totally understand your argument, colour vinyl used to be limited edition and a novelty back in the day, it's not very limited nowadays and its not special anymore. The price of vinyl is ridiculous, it's a big reason as to why I don't bother collecting vinyl. I have a lot of my parents OG's anyway, which includes a limited purple vinyl of Kreator's Coma of Souls. I very rarely listen to bonus tracks on a reissue/remaster, its cool the first time but when you wanna hear the album how it originally was it just make it unnecessarily longer. As of present day I'm more than happy collecting CD's, they're much cheaper and easier to store in a collection. But even the CD price is going up slowly wihtout anyone noticing, it's ridiculous! 🤘🏻

    Totally right on . I will never understand people who collect multiple copies of the same record. The only remastered version I actually prefer to the original is Iggy and the Stooges Rae power. The only way I would buy a record is if it has bonus songs that aren’t live or demo junk ( only unreleased studio recordings).

    Excellent video Jürgen. I totally agree in most of what you say here, colours, double vinyl, remastered stuff........ Many of the big labels, Nuclear Blast, Seasons of Mist, Napalm etc are damn gready.........
    I do like that some albums are remixed, just because the original recordings might have suffered from low budget or bad producers. Cheers. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

    Even as a fairly newer collector, I can see things are getting out of hand, and it's getting to a ridiculous point. Yet another batch of that onr album in yet another five colors? Who buys these that they keep doing this? I mean, can you really blame the labels? If there is demand for an album, why would you not wanna sell more albums? However, they are using the wacky colors to sell it easier. I mean, if all the reissues they made were black, nobody felt the urge to double buy it. Unless it has something different like a colored vinyl record! I stopped buying the colored records very quickly, and now I'm stepping back from reissues altogether mostly. I love collecting, but I ain't collector scum! Hahaha

  • @bvdaussiemetalhead9338

    Colour vinyl is just ridiculous nowadays and it’s only for the multiple version collectors. I have a couple OGs on coloured vinyl but they were rare back then. I mostly buy new releases on cd now and concentrate on saving up and buying OGs when possible. I have purchased a few unofficial albums recently only due to the OG price being way too expensive.

      Exactly I see people that will buy five different records of the same record just because they are different colors that's ridiculous... I go for CDs only now and if I can get an original copy I will but if not I'm fine with a real.. a lot cheaper and easier to store...🤘☕🚬

    Excellent video, Jurgen. Like most people our age. I totally agree with you. I cant be arsed with these double vinyl reissues, or when a 12 track new album comes out on double vinyl, madness. I can take or leave the coloured vinyl. Back in the day, I was excited to buy Girlschool- Hit n Run on red vinyl, and the gold version of No Sleep till Hammersmith ( oh yeah, and the red vinyl version of Terrible Certainty). Now its a change to see black wax.

      I have a lot of those coloured LPs as well, the newer ones in the collection... It was cool for a while but it´s just getting out of hand.
      Double vinyl on 45RpM? Better sound quality? I can´t hear that. Without flexing about my stereo, I have a 2500 Euro turntable with a 800 Euro needle, amp and preamp for 3000 and speakers for 5000. So, all you audiophiles who say it sounds better, come, fight me, hahahaha....

  • @horseofunreason

    Great rant! One of the worst things is when they add a bunch of bonus tracks starting on the B-side, but it's not enough - congrats it's a double LP with a etching you look at once, and the price goes up. Cheers!

    • @albertampel4175

      Yeah, exactly, leave the album alone as it was supposed to be!!! One thing becomes very obvious to me now is: Old pressings are usually very thin and sometimes contain more than 50 minutes of music (Maiden i.E.). "Experts" say it sounds horrible if yout on more that 21 minutes on one side. Why do the old pressings then sound better than remastered versions on two LPs on 45 rpm?????????? The old Death records on Under One Flag sound better than the remasterd Relapse pressings, same as the example I used in the video: Razor....

    One of my biggest frustrations as a collector I've noticed the past 5-6 years bands have been releasing massive varient collections for one album and will leave the rest hanging without an lp release. The number of bands lately I've asked if they plan to re-release their past albums and got a no just the upcoming albums will be pressed. If i love the artist, i want to own their discography, not 10 copies of one album

      And I say this as somebody who only cares about black vinyl. I also love CDs and cassettes. I grew up in the 80's and as a kid I could afford almost only cassettes. Vinyl was an occasionally special treat. I had t save a lot for a record. I bought Bathory on vinyl for example because the art was too cool. When CDs arrived, I was happy about it and started to buy those, without stopping to love vinyls and cassettes.

    Pretty much agree with all you say here Jurgen. I will admit to buying a specific reissue of a few bands that are kind of "Special" to me but on the whole.... it's just nonsense... especially when the overall sound isn't as good as the old stuff from back in the day.... you forgot to mention the amount of warped stuff in todays market, lol. Black vinyl is the rare one these days and don't get me started on this double vinyl gatefold sleeve malarky. 😫No need for it all.

    Great video, Jürgen. As for the Black Sabbath remix version of "Forbidden", Tony Iommi said beforehand that they had never agreed with Ernie C's production from the start, but the record company had forced them. The band thought the production just "didn't sound right" and he made no secret of the fact that Ernie C was the wrong guy for the job. In this view, the production of "Forbidden" has never sounded the way it should have sounded since its release.

    Yes, the vinyl trend has gone pretty insane and there are lots of discuss about.
    1) Coloured records can be pretty tacky and cursed looking, especially splattered and weird colours that don't jibe well with the overall album's aesthetic. Agreed also that you cannot really see the scratches, dirt/dust, and other physical issues.
    2) Splitting up the record on double LP 45RPM has some advantages, especially with combating potential inner groove distortion on lesser stylus shapes, and allowing the engineer to increase the volume of the music during the lacquer cutting process, thus making it louder.
    3) New and used record prices are absolutely nuts and finding bargains, never mind actual albums we're looking for, is a game of futility. I've had my fair share of seeing people's prices being complete rip-offs or it turns out that their records are scratched to hell.
    4) Special editions and box sets are expensive and some are crammed with needless trinkets and other things.
    5) Remastered audio specifically for LPs is a very tricky process. I know who you're referring to regarding the High Roller Records remaster of that Razor album and he does quite a few decent cuts but I guess there's bound to be a few that aren't special. I've seen remasters where the label used brickwalled/compressed masters for their LP editions or the new remasters are botched in some way. If the remaster was taken from the original analogue master tapes or the post-mixes/pre-mastered audio, then I definitely would like it.
    6) Some remixes can be good or bad. I own remixes of older albums that uses brand new artwork, which I don't mind. Sodom recently released their "Bullet In The Head" 2024 Redux video with the new remix and it sounds better than the original sound from Tapping The Vein.
    7) Agreed with many people playing their records on garbage Crosley/Victrola players or uses them for mere props and decorations. Very annoying, in my opinion, and shows off a very bad impression of the sound quality of a record. Like you, I have a good stereo setup with Nakamichi equipment, a very high-end direct drive turntable and cartridge with a micro-line stylus, and Wharfedale Linton speakers and I own quite a few excellent sounding records across various genres, including metal.

    I aggree on everything you said. It always made me laugh about new(er) collectors especially showing the same record in 15 colour versions, because it is "cool". For me it is just show off, which comes from the instagrams and facebook, people think they are are special this way and will be praised for the fact that they have some many variants. Fuck them. It is nothing about collecting, but about showing off. At the moment I have only one album, which is in two different versions, and that is Dismember debut. I rather have the originals, or a reissue if the original is just stupid expensive, but I prefer to have different albums, not just the same thing in X variants just to put a fancy pic on instagram and expect people telling me how cool I am.

    I'm one of the loudest and most righteous critics of this trendy colored vinyl gimmick. I hate how it's transformed collecting into this novelty of "ohh look at the pretty colors" and further inflating the price even more. The most frustrating part is some of these labels aren't even putting out black vinyl anymore (I'm looking at. your Relapse and Nuclear Blast). To add to that, the most ridiculous gimmick is labels like 20Buck Spin that release like 18 different variants of an album. These labels treat the consumers like we're all trendy teenagers and not the grumpy old men that we really are!

Well done. 🤘 Been a lot of people putting up grievances about modern vinyl collecting. There's a conspiracy theory started by NTX Vinyl that a lot of the big record companies want vinyl to become a high-end collectible like sneakers or trading cards or Gucci handbags. Print a limited quantity mark the price up high and they sell out fast and the FOMO goes on for years until the record is pressed again. Keeping that FOMO alive and the prices high. Changes are upon us? Stay metal.

    People call it vinyls because they weren't born in the time when they were called albums or lp's - for instance, most teens i've heard they say ''those big cd's'' and when referring to turntables, ''vinyl reader'' , ''disc-reader'' or ''big cd player'' are alternative versions for the old term. Digital education has operated miracles in D-evolution !! And another thing - not all collectors are Metalheads, so they don't give a toss on the impact speculation brings to you. Thanks.

    Good points as always, Jürgen. However, the steep increase of prices for used vinyl… isn’t it simply a case of supply/demand? I mean, while there’s a finite amount old Heavy Metal LPs, the interest for those records has peaked in the last ten to fifteen years. In capitalist logic, this means prices will rise. It sucks, but what can you do?
    As an employee at a record store, I try to set prices according to what I believe a fan of, say, an early ZZ Top LP would be willing to pay to own the physical artifact, instead of slavishly follow the current Discogs median. Of course, ”we” can no longer sell them for 3 EUR (in excellent condition), that would put us out if business pretty soon. That doesn’t mean prices must go through the roof though. The middle path is the way to go.

    • @albertampel4175

      I totally understand that from a storeowner´s point. I have a friend that runs a recordstore as well. He just recently said he couldn´t do with only used LPs so he has to offer new stuff as well. The marge on new vinyl is very low it seems. They´re already pretty expensive when you buy them from the company or the distribution. Can you confirm this?
      Another point is the rent for the store and the energy costs. If you don´t have a shop and do just online sales, every platform takes a certain percentage off... and these are getting higher as well.
      Complicated topic! I just did it from a "old collector´s" point of view. There would be so many more aspects to be discussed.
      ...and like I said, I´ll be the first to admit: "I´m guilty!, hahaha...

    • @johanpettersson1423

      Just to clarify, I TOTALLY understand your complaints - having myself also experienced the ”good old days” of ultra-cheap Metal LPs it’s a real bummer to get even the most basic records these days… Old men yelling at clouds and all that. 😊
      I’m just an employee at the store (although I’m in charge of the second hand department), so I don’t know all the details around retail/distributor pricing, but yeah from what I’ve gathered the margins can be very small. The store I’m working for is a relatively large business though, so I suppose we have somewhat better margins because of the larger volumes.
      I can imagine it being really hard for smaller shops to try and compete with online retailers. It requires a loyal customer base who are OK with shelling out a few extra euros (god bless them!) to support the local store.

    This is a rant I approve of. All points 100%. When it comes to 80s and 90s albums I no longer will accept reissues. I've twice now sold a reissue LP to buy an original press CD even. As for colour 80s vinyl I recall Jag Panzer did like a dozen variants of their debut

  • @metalneanderthal

    Honestly man…colored vinyl is like collecting trading cards or slabbed (encased comics). Which is why I’m not a fan. I never slabbed my comics and wasn’t really into cards. I play my music. Black vinyl is where it’s at. Scratches scuffs etc you can see them so much better. Don’t get me wrong special box sets etc I’m a sucker for. So I guess I’m a bit of a hypocrite. Key big albums in my life? Yeah…I’ll shell out some coin for a cool collectors box with pendants, flags, posters, key chains etc.
    I like bonus tracks if they’re justified. For example adding an old demo that hasn’t been re released or some actual studio tracks that were never released but shitty sounding live tracks or rough cuts? No thanks.
    However I’m obviously not shelling out 200 bucks for an OG press when I can get a reissue for 30. So they do have their place.
    Buy what you like. Personally I buy cds mostly. I can still get a tons of cds for much less. You reap what you sow vinyl collectors. You want prices to go back down? People need to stop buying them. Supply and demand. People stop buying them completely along with cds though and physical media dies so keep that in mind.
    Look man..I’m a massive comic collector too and those movies screwed me over. Certain key books I wanted that I had a shot at buying I now know I will never able to afford. For example, Thanos first appearance Ironman 55 went for an average of 150 dollars. When that first Avengers film dropped? It became a 5000 dollar book over night.
    Records are collectible now like it or hate it. In fact records are now getting professionally graded like comics and cards as well as vhs. So there it is. I think it’s ridiculous when I go to record show now and you can’t touch an average old party copy of Judas Priest Screaming for Vengeance for under 25 or 40 dollars GTFOH with that. So it’s just not new colored vinyl that is inflated prices.
    I don’t know. Vinyl has definitely hit its ceiling though as far as new pressings

Leider!

    I despise remixes. Megadeth are the prime example. Imo remixing an album is like a painter going back to a painting and altering it. Hell NO! Not cool at all.

    The price has gone through the roof recently. I dont understand the double or triple dipping on albums. I don't believe its the best way to support a band either. It just takes another copy off the market for a potential fan. I noticed that Maiden are bringing out different versions of Powerslave and Somewhere in Time. I was hoping for a DVD so i won't be getting either of them. I see theres a new Motorhead Singles box coming out too if you didn't know. But most of all I bet youre looking forward to the Morbid Angel box set 😂😂😂 3 or 4 lots of splatter versions to pick from!

      I won´t buy the Maiden reissues either, nor the Motörhead boxset. A Morbid Angel boxset? Oh really, wow, hahaha...

    What I hate most are the prices. If you told me in the late 90s that 25 plus years from now vinyl will be more expensive than CD's I would've laughed in your face. Well, I would've been wrong. CD's are my format of choice so I'm happy the prices are basically the same if not a bit cheaper than they were back then.💿🤘🏻

    This video was very entertaining... Even though it's a not supposed to be this stuff used to annoy me as well only CD now... Original CDs have common bands now are 50 bucks... More underground bands easily 60-1 00... Could you make a video like this about cds? And what annoys you?

      A video about my CD issues would be boring, I have none, hahaha... I collect CDs as well. Yeah, the prices for OGs but that´s my only complain.
