Went to the nursery Saturday in the rain. Got a lot of the perennials on my list to purchase. The petunias were a little limited but it is later than I usually plant mine. Saw Jenny and Jerry from the distance because they were busy. I came 2.5 hours to get to the nursery. Was not disappointed.

Sedum are almost fool proof by me, here in Virginia. Autumn Joy was my original, a huge, healthy thing that has been seeding itself around my garden for years. I now have six of them, all large and showy, that continue to throw off small plants, which I find new homes for. Just found a rather large specimen growing under a Little Lyme hydrangea nearby. John Creech sedum is another great one, which is a ground cover from heaven. Tiny buds, very low to the ground, grows like a carpet. Keeps the edge of a bed, right on the street, neat and tidy. No care whatsoever. My third try at a ground cover there, and this was a complete winner. Lovely green color.

To continue with Jerry’s idea, it would look pretty to have the Summerific Lilac Crush hibiscus in the center (or as a background plant) with the midnight masquerade penstemon surrounding (or in front of it) like he said. But then to ALSO add around (or in front of) the midnight masquerade some of the Rainbow Rhythm Daylily’s; they have the light green foliage like the hibiscus so it would tie in beautifully, plus also be a step down in size to have a really nice three tiered garden bed.

Thank you for highlighting the annual Surefire Cherry Cordial begonia in some of your other videos. We purchased five from Proven Winners Direct. The foliage is a little brighter here and the whole plant glows red. It is very eyecatching and the quality/health of the plant is outstanding. We are really enjoying them!

Have a pretty old white penstemon that has taken over an area under a Japanese maple over the years. Just dug four mounds up and gave them away. When that stand of plants is waving in the sunlight, it is a thing of beauty. It seeds all over that small area and I constantly dig up little ones all the time. I replant them and they seem to thrive with no issue. Deer and rabbit resistant for sure. Great plant.

Agree that Cat’s Pajama Nepeta is one of the best from PW. I planted 10 two months ago, and they haven’t stopped blooming profusely. The spent blooms really don’t need deadheading. It is just a fantastic plant here in zone 8a, Northern GA.

I planted Summerific Hibiscus twice, and each time a green caterpillar skeletonized the entire plant within. Few days. I gave both plants away to someone who does not see that caterpillar in her garden. It is a caterpillar that attacks Brassicas I think.

Well…if you have problems with a known pest you have to treat for it. Regular sprays with Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) handles such problems. BT is a natural beneficial bacteria.

I liked the pairing of the summerific hibiscus with the midnight masquerade and the backlight phlox. I do have a question: if I am using the hibiscus as a bog plant for an area in the garden that stays wet pretty much all season how would the phlox and midnight masquerade perform in those conditions? Would you pair the hibiscus with something else? Thank you! 😊

Three of each Oso Easy Italian Ice Roses, Pugster Blue butterfly bushes, and Double Doozy spirea. All came in great shape, packaged beautifully, and waited three weeks to get in the ground. They have public display gardens and those areas are open to the public. The nursery portions itself …greenhouses and growing fields can be toured if you are a licensed nursery or landscape professional. They do have occasional sale to the public events for charity…but otherwise do not sell to the public. If you want to buy Proven Winners you can head to Garden Crossings also in Zeeland Michigan as they sell the full line of Proven Winners plants.
