However, Challis screams for the commercial to be turned off at the end of the film
+kadejito - yep, he literally looks disgusted when he says "Begging for candy!", originally it was a celtic tradition - Samhein, which would mean that the harvest season was finished and the "darker" season was upon them. The celtics would then sacrifice animals and children to make sure that their plants/food/stock would be good for the next season.
Great scene. You're thinking he's completely screwed, going to die in the worst possible way, with no hope. Plus, he's the only guy who knows what's going on and could save the world.
Probably the best, most poetic, Gothic part of the film. I only wish Cochran had said, instead of showing the film HALLOWEEN on the TV (which, though, is so cool, great, meta and classic in itself), he had said, "We knew it was time to return when, a few years ago, there was that very nasty business in Haddonfiled, Illinois, involving a killer mad man who escaped from a mental hospital, and went back to his home town to play some delicious tricks on the townsfolk...and his Sister...then disappeared after killing a dozen people on Halloween night...quite a scary trick...the time began for us to begin Our work then..." That would have been even creepier, and, it would have tied the hoped-for anthology films to be, in some way, connected to the original Halloween universe. Either way, it's a cool callback. Mr. Oherlihy was excellent in this role.
Yea! it would've provided an eerie lead up to the whole ancient cult controlling Michael Myers but , at this time, I don't think they had any plans after the third film to bring back Michael Myers as they wanted to turn the franchise into anthology-type movies (like the 'Creepshow' series).
Better yet, this should have been a prequel to the whole franchise. Think about it: Cochran is performing a mass sacrifice of innocent blood. But why? What is he trying to appease? That's where the story of Michael Myers comes in. When his scheme is even partially thwarted, an ancient evil lashes out in outrage over its sacrifice not being fulfilled. It takes matters into its own hands and manifests in the form of a young boy. A boy who stabs his sister to death. The Thorn trilogy could have worked if the cult wasn't controlling Michael, but rather trying to aid in his mission and appease the evil inside him. Thorn would be just a name, a name for something too ancient and powerful to understand. Halloween 4's ending would see the evil passed on to Jamie, and Halloween 5 would feature Wynn spiriting her away. Halloween 6 would bring things full circle when Loomis and Tommy would free Jamie from the evil. But it would be reborn in Michael again, as his body would be in possession of the cult. And THEN the movie series would end in H20.
TheGreaterGood80 -- "Gothic" in the artistic, literary sense. I know it's Celtic...the way the Celtic lore is dramatized is what makes it Gothic-Romantic in tone.
Or what if we see the effects of the masks across the country but a few seconds before a boy puts the mask on he’s messing with the chip he then puts the mask on quickly and instead of melting the kids face it just glitches up and starts electrocuting him in the brain you then hear a voice saying something like “Michael stop watching the TV” the boy then turns to the speaker and removes the mask revealing the blackest eyes...the devil’s eyes
This speech is from Halloween III: The Season of the Witch directed by Tommy Lee Wallace and produced by Debra Hill and John Carpenter. This scene is between the sinister Conal Cochran, played with suave malevolence by Dan O’Herlihy, and Dr. Daniel Challis, played by John Carpenter alum Tom Atkins. As a piece of dialog, it is great. More than great, it is EXCELLENT. The movie itself was not received well, but has garnered something of a cult following (no pun intended) in the ensuing decades.
Imagin if the Man in Black in Halloween 5 was Cocren and this film was ment to connect with Halloween 6, therefor bringing them close together and having the Mark of Thorn behind the Shamrock this whole time. Now hows that for pay off of many sequles. I would of really really injoyed that concept :) would u???
That would've been a really theory, Robbie. I'd would've love to see Conal Cochran return in a future installment of the Halloween franchise as the Man in Black.
The franchise is not called Michael Myers, its called Halloween, so there is no logical reason for people to insist Michael Myers be in it. As for those wishing it was called Season of the Witch rather than Halloween III: Season of the Witch, remember that there is already a movie called Season of the Witch, so in addition to it being an alternative concept to the previous two Halloween movies, there would be the issue of copyright infringement. This was a great installment in the Halloween franchise. End of discussion.
Thus scene and the atmosphere it creates is amazing, but it culminates when he pauses, almost absently, to look at Challis coldly to say "Happy Halloween" without any cheerful inflection whatsoever. After what he revealed to Challis of the REALITY of Halloween (in the film's universe at least) it's such a cynical, mocking, cold-blooded moment and O'Herlihy sells it perfectly, completely without joy or any semblance of the stereotypical supervillain moment. Wonderful. And then the classic Halloween music kicks in to underscore it. Just great. It's a shame the whole Halloween universe thing did not pan out because this film is great horror schlock with Cochran at the center and the pop culture specter of Michael Myers in the background.
Being Scottish and Celtic, Halloween is one of my favourite holidays since it resonates on a personal and cultural level. ‘Halloween III’ might’ve been better placed as a stand alone movie, but regardless, it still had that old school John Carpenter feel and vibe. I always watch this at least once a year (usually just before Halloween). Perhaps not a masterpiece, but I still consider it a classic.
Cochran's actor, Dan O'Herlihy also played the Old Man, the villain from the 1987 film of RoboCop and its sequel who shared similarities to Cochran: Both are founders of the technological companies.
Because Cochran offered a reason to his actions and a slow death while Michael never offered a reason or a conversation, he just simply offered an instant death
Don’t worry, Cochran got transferred to a new dimension and lived. He used his robot building skills to work at OCP, he’s the number one guy at OCP. OCP runs the cops. He fired the number 2 guy.
It's a joke, bro. And besides our hands our tied because the alignment of the planets commands us to have a huge sacrifice this Halloween. Got you. As a movie villain, you have to give Cochran credit for his fanatical devotion to his beliefs, no matter how savage. Only thing miss to firmly tie this movie to the first two would be a magically revived Michael Myers in the witchcraft laboratory of Silver Shamrock. Too bad the anthology concept didn't make it. Would have been better than having Michael Myers coming back to slash up more people, again and again.
I like that in this entry, _Halloween_ and Michael Myers was _just a silly little movie_ about a babysitter killer. He can’t compare to the cosmic evil Cochran is about unleash on the world.
Sinister but also very proper with his verbage and personality. He isn't necessarily working to create a problem as much as he is simply participating in it.
I like how the music from the original Halloween fits perfectly with this scene, almost as if they're actually tied together and not completely separate timelines. I still think if the H18/HK/HE trilogy actually suggests that Michael's mask is the source of his power, perhaps Silver Shamrock/Cult Of Thorn could be linked to it...? Big stretch though.
1-3 were really good, 4 was great nostalgia, 5-6 were terrible, H20 was really good, resurrection was terrible but guilty pleasure, Halloween 2007 was ok, Halloween 2 2009 was the worst ever made, and Halloween 2018 was in the middle, had good moments but the comedy and doctor turning evil ruined the movie.
There wasn't a studio willing to back him after this fizzled quickly at the box office. So unfair! The advertising campaign was so minuscule no one had any idea Myers wasn't the antagonist. Universal had so little faith in it they decided to fool the public, collect a big opening weekend and move on. I hated this movie on opening weekend, thought about it for a few days, saw it again the following weekend and have loved it ever since.

@@lionelhutz5137 To control his environment.
Great scene. You're thinking he's completely screwed, going to die in the worst possible way, with no hope. Plus, he's the only guy who knows what's going on and could save the world.
Favorite scene from any horror flick. Dan O'Herlihy was an established actor long before this film, as was Betsy Palmer before Friday the 13th.
David Moadel agreed 🤝
Dan was also in a movie called "Good Against Evil", a little known TV movie with Dack Rambo. He played a priest.
The most amazing scene in any horror film ever.
The end is great, too.
what is so good about this scene ?

@@lois78 i found the movie interesting somehow. highly lacking logic, but somehow scary as well.
I watched that movie in the 1980s and even now in the year 2020 that Speech sent chills up my spine

This movie overall isn't so perfect, but this sequence alone is 100% that
Underrated film. Very scary. Good story

Also before he helped Alex Rogan defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan Armada.

@@anthonypalermo8816 That's what happens when you grow up without air conditioning
Damn I really like your idea! It would've been awesome to hear Cochran say those very same words.
This will teach kids to never enter a "free gift card giveaway" on the internet lol
Lol so that's what they are...
Dam that would have been a better route than what we got
The franchise is not called Michael Myers, its called Halloween, so there is no logical reason for people to insist Michael Myers be in it.
As for those wishing it was called Season of the Witch rather than Halloween III: Season of the Witch, remember that there is already a movie called Season of the Witch, so in addition to it being an alternative concept to the previous two Halloween movies, there would be the issue of copyright infringement.
This was a great installment in the Halloween franchise. End of discussion.
I think it was boring after this one.
That’s like saying the franchise is not called Freddy Krueger it’s called Nightmare on elm street
Scotch Morrison I disagree, 4, 5 and 6 were great!
Runnin In the 80s Exactly, so if they decided to not have Freddy in a Nightmare on Elm Street movie, they could. It’s a theme, not character specific.
@@BrettMannion actually 4 was good and 5,6 were awful
1:55 my favourite part of the whole movie
Love how Laurie's theme is playing in the background!
That was kinda cool how he said happy Halloween and then the original Laurie theme started playing.
Tom Atkins plays a great hero!
Makes you wonder about what's happening in the world today, and whether there is a certain agency making all of it happen for a very sinister reason.
Cochran actually reminds me of Boris Johnson.

I'm pretty sure that Cochran is more evil than Michael Myers
Because Cochran offered a reason to his actions and a slow death while Michael never offered a reason or a conversation, he just simply offered an instant death
Death always has a design
Absolutely, he wants to kill billions of kids
When Cochran says "Happy Halloween" while Lights Out plays on the TV makes this scene 10x better

Conal is awesome as the ancient Irish warlock.
Sinister but also very proper with his verbage and personality. He isn't necessarily working to create a problem as much as he is simply participating in it.
Cochran LEGEND! Rafferty was right. True genius!
There u have it folks! The origins of Halloween, or also known as to me, the festival of Samhain
Yup. This movie is accurate about Halloween history. I used to be Wiccan, so I know.

Carpenter should have continued to make more stories after this. People would have eventually came around.
@@ronaldh8446 I think where they made the mistake is not having this be part 2. They should have let carpenter do his stories at least 1 more time. I guess part 4 was supposed to be a ghost story. They should have made that one and I think people would have understood and if they didn’t you could have brought Michael back and did part 2.
@@taylorpack7705 I think that is completely valid. Once Myers was the protagonist in the 2nd flick the anthology idea was immediately behind the 8-Ball.
I still think it may have worked - at least with audiences at the time - had they been open in the advertising. HALLOWEEN: SEASON OF THE WITCH without the III (3) to start with. And a tagline stating that Carpenter/Hill, the creators, bring you a whole new tale of terror. Universal dropped the ball. And Carpenter - even with his B movie sensibilities - as usual, was ahead of his time.
