@@blackfang0815 I think Monster Slayer was supposed to be fourth place. Beast Master was last, and Hunter was third place. So he has skipped fourth place.
I'm glad I watched this. I'm playing a ranger who just got to level 3 so this was helpful for me to learn all of the archetypes and what they do. I think that Gloom Stalker sounds like a ton of fun to play and am probably going to choose it
I have a love for the ranger class and i agree, it is one that does a lot out of combat, where most of it's spells are used to travel or slow down enemies. But in combat the ranger isn't weak but one of the hardest class to play because there is so much you can do, i have played a couple of the class and i like i feel completely different than a fighter with a bow. Also thank you for the intro explanation to not baah a class!
Played a Ranger and at 3rd level took Gloomstalker. Wicked. Took out a Flaming Skull in the first round (was at 5th level & one hit was a crit)... I added to the drama by entering the light when I attacked at retreating to the darkness when I was done....
I'm playing a two weapon fighting horizon walker. Sounds pretty cool, but I realized a problem that wasn't apparent at first: bonus action economy. The bonus actions for my character include: 1. Two weapon fighting 2. Hunter's mark 3. Zephyr strike 4. Planar Warrior 5. Misty step 6. Ethereal step 7. Haste 8. Healing spirit 9. Hide (lvl 14, which I haven't reached yet) Even without two weapon fighting, it is really hard in combat to utilize hunter's mark/zephyr strike/haste/healing spirit + planar warrior + misty step/ethereal step. Moreover, this limits the choice of the 9 bonus action spells on the ranger spell list, including healing spirit and swift quiver, which is a pity seen as they're really cool spells. I don't mean to say that the subclass is bad, but you just have to be aware of this problem as it takes a few rounds of combat to utilize the full potential of your character and 2 weapon fighting basically becomes unplayable. Overall, just expect more of a swiss army knife, and decide which abilities suit which scenarios best.
Only mad person plays Horizon walker woth dual wiending. Hunter class is desinged for this type of fighting. Horizon walker is designed as S&B, 2H weapons user, or archer. Even on 3rd level, you can see, that this subclass cannot work properly with dual wielding!
@@JuckiCZ A teleporting knife thrower could be interesting now with the Thrown Weapon Fighting Fighting Style in Tasha's, no bonus action required to make 2 thrown attacks (after level 5). Maybe pick up the new Fighting Style Feat to get Archery too for the bonus to hit.
@@bladetytan9025 You are right, I was thinking about the same. I classify this as S&B, because with throwing FS you can easily cast - drawing a weapon is a part of the attack, so you can cast even absorb elements with such character (The same with 2H weapon). The same is impossible with dual wielder. Even casting haste is problem for dual wielder, or ordinary S&B Dueling Ranger.
I think you read the Monster Hunter ability "Slayer's Prey" incorrectly and it probably hurt your ranking of it. The part that was incorrect reads as "The benefit lasts until you finish a short or long rest. It ends early if you designate a different creature." Based on this, there is no limit to the amount of times you can use this ability within a short or long rest, just that it can only be used on one creature at a time. But since it's a bonus action, I don't feel like that's a huge downside.
Hey Rhys, I would have no problem playing a Gloom Stalker ranger even as a variant human, because I could live with just two levels of no Darkvision!! Also, did you do a video about the new optional ranger features in Tasha's Cauldron Of Everything yet? There are also new Beastmaster companion options there too!!
Good things even a Basic Ranger has - Proficiency in Simple and Martial Weapons, Light and Medium Armor, Shields, and they have a d10 hit die. Assuming that the party's Ranger has the same Constitution Modifier as the Fighter and Paladin, and has at least a +2 Dexterity Modifier, and the party is decently well funded, a Ranger with Half-Plate is going to have 17 AC, the same as Splint armor (admittedly for about 3 times the price). Throw on a shield, that's now 19. Thus, here is how I see a Ranger being played - Shoot the foes as they come towards the party. Then, when the enemy gets in melee range, that's when the Paladin or Barbarian, or whomever the tank is, closes in to engage. Ranger still uses arrows, and maybe a few spells. Then, when the Tank is below half their Max HP, that's when the Ranger swaps places with them, and does melee damage.
I find my ranger Remus is extremely deadly. He's a hunter ranger variant human. I gave him the crossbow expert feat as his bonus feat. He's styled as a crazy cowboy who duel-wields hand crossbows. With Hunter's Mark and Colossus Slayer he hits super hard. That's a total of 4d6+1d8+8 damage at 3rd level. Not into min maxing but I wanted a gunslinger cowboy type but the DM said no guns. So hand crossbows were the stand in.
Too bad you can't reload a bolt when your hands are full. It would be great if you could also shoot on your second turn. Sure you can disregard the loading properties, but you can't ignore the ammo properties. You need a free hand to put a bolt in the crossbow. Or does the variant part mean you have 3 arms?
The ranger is my absolute favorite class, not because it's good, but because I love the archetype of the ranger in general. In 5e I can deal more than decent damage (especially as an archer with Sharphooter and HM), track almost anything (especially with Hunter's Mark) and even heal/buff to an extent. I just love the versatility of the class! Also, the Horizon Walker is my personal favorite archetype.
I love the Ranger thematically, but I've always found the base class to be fairly weak or too situational compared to the other classes. The subclasses help, but I still find the base Ranger to bring it down. Plus Foe Slayer still sucks.
Agree w/ Miles. Even though I think your ranking was good, your criticism of Beast Master was a little off. It still deserves to be dead last. First, you were correct that the beast master was over limited. The ranger has to sacrifice an attack to allow the beast to attack. Generally the beast's attack will be weaker than the ranger. It should allow a beast attack in addition to the ranger's attack. [The ranger does gets Extra Attack btw]. This would allow the beast master to remain relatively even with other rangers who get bonus damage. This is a big action economy issue for the BM ranger. The beasts' attacks do become magical at level 7 but there needs to be dedicated magical items for a beast to enhance their capabilities in the DMG or a sourcebook. Which brings us to the second problem... at level 7, you can now stop using your attacks to power the beast but instead you have to use a bonus action. Hunter's Mark directly conflicts with this. It's not good but it's not a subclass killer as you only use the BA for the initial Hunter's Mark cast and when you need to move it. HW's Planar Warrior power also conflicts with Hunter's Mark. This might be one reason I waver putting Horizon Walker at 2d in the tier ranking instead of Hunter (which doesn't suffer from the BA conflict). In campaigns or with DMs where there's always lots of minions and the Hunter can use Volley often, the Hunter is a stronger damage dealer than HW. But HW still gets over on the Hunter in movement capabilities while Hunter gets the slight edge in defense against casters (Evasion). It's very campaign dependent. A third Beast Master problem is that the beasts die relatively easily. They should start with the maximum HP of the animal chosen and should gain more HP than they currently do as the Ranger levels. They should also get Ability Score Improvements to max out their to hit and damage bonuses [and increase HP with Con buffs]. Oh and their AC is usually very low. Magical items and ASI's to Dex needed. Fourth, Share Spells is just an ok power. Beyond healing spells, there isn't much to work with on the Ranger spell list. I mean Protection from Energy and Stoneskin are decent. But this needs enhancement. In my Homebrew, the Beast is commanded to attack a creature once and then attacks each round until that creature dies or escapes [or you issue a new command]. You don't have to waste an attack or Bonus Action every round. I also give the beast Uncanny Dodge at level 11 and Evasion at level 15 in addition to current features. I give the Beast more HP (max stat block HP + average of HD rounded up per level) and Ability Score Improvements [but no feats] when the Ranger gets them and gains proficiency in Athletics and Stealth at level 7.
I Take 2 Levels Of Twilight Cleric, For Eyes Of The Night (300ft Of Darkvision) & Twilight Sanctuary (30ft Of Low Light & Healing), I Then Take 18 Levels Of Either Mage For (Bladesinger) OR Rogue For (Assassin or Arcane Trickster)...
Once Tasha's comes out, and the new Beast companions with their better action economy, as well as the new and much better ranger variant features drop, i think beast master is actually going to be sort of great.
@sum body i think the sorcerer and warlock additions are great too, and the new fighting styles. And some of the updated spell lists were honestly badly needed. I mean, the Divination Wizard cant even cast divination in 5e currently. Glad Tashas is gonna fix that.

So, I love your videos, but you've been spending too long with the Revised Ranger Beast Master Conclave. None of what you said applies to the PHB Beast Master. Your beast is CR1/4 or lower. They don't get to add ability score improvements. And it takes your action to command the beast to attack, but at 5th level when you do that as an action, you can make one attack. Not coordinated attack, and it doesn't require the beast to use its reaction. Also, 7th level is exceptional training, which lets you command it to dash, disengage, or hide as a bonus action. And it gets magical weapons to overcome magical resistance. 11th level lets the beast take two attacks when commanded. And 15th level lets you share spells. Also, Slayer's Prey does not have a limited amount of uses. You can use it all day, every day.
My issue with the Ranger is that its spell casting feels like its there to make up for things that should be core class features but arent. It makes it feel like your burning your (very, very limited) spell slots to do what other classes can do without spending resources.
Monster hunter should be higher, you've read Slayer's prey wrong. There is no limit to quantity of uses, and the only duration is the next rest. "Slayer’s Prey Starting at 3rd level, you can focus your ire on one foe, increasing the harm you inflict on it. As a bonus action, you designate one creature you can see within 60 feet of you as the target of this feature. The first time each turn that you hit that target with a weapon attack, it takes an extra 1d6 damage from the weapon. This benefit lasts until you finish a short or long rest. It ends early if you designate a different creature."
If you actually knew what things did and what is Cannon and UA it would help. Slayers prey does not work on the short rest mechanic you can use as much as you want the only thing is it can only target one creature at a time. This has been clarified by Jeremy Crawford. The Beast Master you described is the UA version. I like your videos but they need to say in my opinion because that is what it is your opinion on the archetypes. Everyone that makes a ranking video places them differently. I love the ranger there are things I do not like about it like there base 10th level ability in my opinion is the worst in the game. It is still a very good and useful class in combat, exploration and even extra healing if you have no healer in the party.
