An automatic pool playing robot - how hard could it be? Turns out harder than I thought. It took me quite a while to work through all the difficulties of this project but when it all finally came together is so worth it. To my surprise the most interesting aspect of this project is using the cue to play real games of pool over the internet. Let me know if you think twitch plays billiards would be worthwhile...
“This is probably the most complex project that I’ve ever done” seems like he says this every video. That’s probably why they’re so great.
10 years from now he'll be recovering his robot moon lander from the pacific and saying "This is probably the most complex project that I've ever done."
He's like Goku that keeps on becoming stronger whereas in this case strengthening his skills by challenging himself

Man, you are a smooth running model of efficiency! A real joy to watch and learn from. Thank you. ps..... I have been married for over 50 years to the same 'dream girl'. Hope for you the same. Wow, I thought my workshop generated a lot of useless stuff. The joy is in the building it, not using it (knowledge of, not practice with).
I'm a mechanical engineer and I think I'm pretty good at figuring out stuff like this. You are light years ahead of me. I can follow what you are doing, but if I had to do it all myself I would be completely overwhelmed even with all the concepts thrown at my feet. You are a complete genius. You must be in the top 0.001% of people to do things like this. It's an honor just to watch.

If a team of twenty people did this, I would be impressed. But the fact that you could figure out all these different aspects of this complex problem by yourself is just crazy. You are a genius!
The man is a real scientist, he approaches problems with a scientific brain, I admire him because of that
I think a team of 20 people would have made it 20 times harder
@@Upstart051 I don't know about that. This project involved so many different problems from engineering. mathematics, physics, computer science etc. To be sufficiently knowledgeable in all these fields that you can solve these problems in a reasonable amount of time is pretty hard. And I see potential for dividing these problems so that different persons can figure them out. For example one guy can take care of calibrating the camera system. One can be an expert on billard physics and solve the problem from which direction and with what amount of force etc should the queue hit the queueball. One person can build the queue that is capable of performing a shot in a given direction and with a given amount of force etc. Maybe 20 people is a bit much but I'm pretty sure that doing this alone is much harder.

@@hisokaamorou4981 You don't think the proof of concepts and things that he made in these garage projects here could provide anything worth utilizing to make real products that work in the real world? So many of the projects in this channel have huge potential to be further developed into something practical in the real world (e.g the algorithms he made for this one and the aimbot bow). That doesn't mean he needs to do it though, maybe he just likes to have goofy fun inventions here just for the sake of it. You know what the best part of this video is?...
It's not the wining shot or when all things work.. it the failures when you show how repeatedly unexpectedly we do run into problem and sometimes soo Soo small you don't even know where to look at.. but breaking it down and not giving up is the best part and to see that struggle and after that seeing the wining shot is the best feeling ... Even I as a viewer get! ❤️
Your wife's lack of enthusiasm about your stuff is the realest ish on the internet
Yup, just like home!
I'm sure she is just playing a character for comedic effect and in real life she is much more interested and enthusiastic. She wouldn't have married a person like him if she had zero interest in the stuff he does.
@@kellymoses8566 It's definitely a character/part that Wife acts in the videos, and the moments are definitely scripted, but Wife plays her character very well and is a great foil.
She is every developer's wife. I'd spend months on a project, show my wife my nifty new app. She would say, "Is that all it does?" I'd head to my office, babbling about how that it took months.

this guy: uses all of college in one video

I’m becoming a mechanical engineering tech and the math he was talking about went way above my head, to think most of that was an “easy equation” for him
Facts
mechanical engineering is just linear algebra
He knows everything. Animation, Engineering, Programming, Arduino, Web developer, Illustrator.
But does he know why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
He doesn't know that the robot is not his child.
Right? I'm freaking flabbergasted. Although I think he might have hired an animator for this video, but not sure.
And above all, math.
looked it up - he's the lead engineer at Formlabs' R&D department, which makes a lot of sense now.
I'm sure that I am not the only one who enjoys your videos so much, they could be twice as long. Seeing you going through all the problems one by one is really amazing.
I can't imagine the pain he went through while programming and debugging everything
Yeah, definitely worse than labor ;-)
I'm more impressed by the machinery... I would've just build a NN and spend all that debugging time shooting and shooting... and shooting and shooting... and after that, maybe some more shooting
What kind of language he is using to program all of that? Is it high lvl or low lvl? I'm a layman but want to understand a bit more...
@@bobocpe definitely Python

Engineering in a nutshell
Why does this hurt so much?
*Me, literally on iteration 5 of a "simple" set of 4 covers to keep dumb humans from touching 480 volts at a couple of amps*
Software engineering too, except that sometimes a solar flare causes something to go wrong so you have to take that into account too.
@@Lizlodude "Bonus Round!"
Huge Respect for your intelligence.. and knowing all these different aspects to solve problems is itself God Level... Not seen anyone like you ever.. 🌹❤️🌹
I find it mind blowing how someone can actually be this intelligent
It takes dedication
You can try learning programming. It gives great returns in looking smart for a relatively small amount of work. MatLab (featured in the basketball hoop video) is the language I think is the most useful for this type of stuff.
@@joshuamorin2123 well kind of. He is using python and python has become the go to language for machine learning, data crunching and computer vision. In python you can use opencv, tensorflow, numpy etc. to get work done fast. Matlab is just super annoying after a while and imo unnecessary if you have libraries to replace its functionality.
And consistent

This is actually really extreme from a tech perspective. I've looked at other youtube tech projects and enjoyed them while thinking "yeah I can do that" but seeing this, no way in hell.
Same here. I’m in awe, but I’m also kind of depressed…
agreed. The complexity of this, just wow. It's not Just fabrication (multiple methods), just coding, just robotics, just web design, just camera and projection...like so many complex systems that are then assembled into an even further complex system. And in the end it works flawlessly. People that don't build things will think this is so cool. People that Do build things I hope got the same goosebumps I did when he was shooting pool with Destin online. I was on my feet cheering. So so cool.
This dude always does some insane stuff. I'm not even into this kind of stuff but the level of his stuff makes me interested. No idea what he's talking about most of the time but its great lol

I can barely understand what's happening but it's still amazing
Most impressive part is that you didn’t give up. It always amazes me.
Winners never quit
Watching incredible People failing but never giving up, are one of the best aspects of youtube.
Hi Shane. Jose from Puerto Rico and a new subscriber. This channel is fascinating. That pool stick is amazing, but the work you put in is what got me to subscribe. I'm not an engineer by a long shot, but science has always fascinated me. When you combine fabrication with science, it's something incredible to watch. I'm 65 and retired, but Engineering is the way to go If I were given a chance to start over. Having said that, I saw the video where you made the non-missing bow and arrow setup. I was wondering if you can design a slingshot with the same capacity? I would love to see how your brain would go about designing something like that.
When he says “I am an idiot,” he just means “I am a regular person.”
Actually that's still slightly smarter than a regular person...
It takes a good mind to realise your own mistake
He is probably the smartest person I’ve seen and this is the second video of his I’ve watched the first one was the basketball hoop he’s so damn smart
It's like Einstein calling himself an idiot. I think he's just trying to make us feel better about ourselves.
when he says "it's also very easy to solve this
mathematically using linear algebra"
everyone watching : shut up
can't imagine how many offers he got from big companies offering him thousands of dollars to work for them, he's an entire team in one person. Just WOW.
Not even kidding. What he just made would probably cost 10 million for many companies to make.
The biggest problem with companies are their management. They can hire the most expensive genius but if Larry the manager is a controlling asshole no job will be done.
@@faizalf119 the other problem for the corporations is they have to take these proof of concepts and turn them into an actual reliable product, which is the most labour intensive part of the whole thing. lucky for this guy he doesn't have to worry about that since his main product is the videos about the things he's made rather than the things he's made themselves

How is this man so knowledgably in so many different areas, it's actually insane
He's a nerd
He's worked for decades on getting to this point.
@Peter Evans yes, he accumulated knowledge up to the point where everything he does is at least kinda similar to sth else he already did. like the plateau thingy he made isn't new, he used that in another video as well. i'm also pretty sure he already calibrated different things in his life as well, which is also where he pretty much used old/deprecated code and got an error in.
he is very knowledgeable and all he does is very impressive, but it isn't completely out of this world. i assume anyone can do this, given enough time and willpower. and i'm pretty sure that for someone with programming knowledge this wouldn't take decades. maybe like a year or so if you really have no much experience on any of these points.
i'm a programmer myself and have also worked on similar projects. i'd say i could code the stuff necessary in like 2-3 weeks maybe. however on the engineering part i'd need like 6 months to even get to know the basics probably. that's the stuff that i think is very impressive and requires not only a lot of knowledge but also the necessary machines to work with. he probably spent like 100k for every machinery we see in the videos, i'd assume. which is pretty much equally impressive. like who got all that stuff at home?!
@@nadvic1797 It is out of this world for ONE young guy to basically do it all: machine shop, software engineering, web design, microcontrollers/servos/motors/encoders/solenoids/etc, math and physics, 3D printing, and the list goes on.
