Learn from me how to install a garage epoxy flake coating. This is a step by step video training course that teaches you all you need to know to do this type of epoxy coating the right way.
GARAGE FLOOR EPOXY FLAKE COATING COURSE:
    www.theconcreteunderground.co...
In this video I'm going to show you what I feel is the best type of paint to use for a garage floor. If you want to paint a concrete floor in a garage, the best paint to use is a 2 - part polyaspartic concrete coating.
This kind of concrete paint is more durable, more chemical & scratch resistant, bonds extremely well to concrete, and doesn't peel up under hot tires.
I'll show you the best way to prep the concrete before applying the polyaspartic coating, how to mix it properly, how to roll it on the concrete and how to add decorative flakes to the floor. Then I'll show you how to apply the clear polyaspartic top coat to finish the floor.
My two favorite companies to buy the polyaspartic coating from are:
    Epoxy2U : epoxy2u.com/collections/one-d...
    Flexmar : www.flexmarpolyaspartics.com/
These two companies have the most user friendly concrete paint, polyaspartic coatings and epoxy garage floor coatings I have ever used.
You can purchase product to roll down a solid color or do a flake floor like I did in the video.

I had a brand new house built 3 years ago. This was the first project that I did on my concrete garage floor. I bought Rust-Oleum Rock Solid garage floor paint. I followed their instructions and it came out fantastic! I used 2 kits at about $95 a kit. Only problem with that product is, you must roll it within 10 minutes after you mix it, or it will turn into taffy!!

Great video, Mike. I've been hesitant to use the big box, Rustoleum brand as it seems to be hit or miss. However, the main goal looks to be prep prep prep and I like what you did here. I'll be noting these brands you used for my garage floor. We own a driveway sealing company and it's basically the same mechanics for a concrete floor. Nicely done.

I used HC coating for our garage floor. Product application went well and we did not park on the garage floor for about three weeks. Within six months the rubber from the vehicle burned into the top coat in several locations…..disappointing. I used Goof Off, a scraper and commercial detergent to get the rubber off. Haven’t had any issues since. Plan on using Polyaspartics on the next garage project. Thanks.

Hey Mike I have done two garage floors now. First one I just bought the rust oleum 2 gallon epoxy kit....only comes with enough flake to speckle the gray epoxy nowhere near as much as you are applying. Second time I went with simple gray floor and porch paint, broadcast some flakes onto the wet base coat and then went over it with clear epoxy with silica mixed in for traction. I did it without cleats so I screwed up a few spots but no one can tell. Next time I do it, I going to use a lot more flake
..looks much more professional. Oh and I didnt grind either floor just pressure washed with strong degreaser and then etched, then I finished prepping with a coat of white concrete primer which makes the actual paint spread out much better. Concrete seems to drink up that first coat of paint if you don't primer it. I spent about 300 bucks the second time

Mike, having new house built and learning a lot from your videos. Have a question, my garage floor has been poured for 6 months. It is not a smooth finish job so I have something to bite on with either of these products. Two days ago, sub spilled oil on it and let it stand for 2 days before degreasing and scrubbing. There is still a stain there about 12” diameter. I was planning on just deck scrubbing the floor and allowing a day or two to dry before the oil spill. What would you do for prep? I was trying not to rent a grinder since floor was triled rough. Thanks so much!

  • @bryankopesky8228
    @bryankopesky8228 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nice Job! Prep is key and you guys seem to do an excellent job on that front but just a heads up to DIY'ers -- it's easy to get "fatigued" during the prep as it is a lot of work, takes patience and confidence, and a little thinking about the science going on here to get a great bond. Certainly, don't hesitate to buy the right tools as well. Mike - I really like your videos as you have a great cadence to your narrations. I am always looking for close up shots of the finished work you do so I hope you can add that to your videos in the future. Thanks so much and keep up the great work!

This is a great video and really explains the process well. I had a question about the products you are using. You put down one coat, then the flakes, then a second clear coat. Are the products that you recommend that have 2 containers, is that the product for the first coat, the second coat or for both coats? It is for both, are you mixing them together for the first (to get the color) but not the second (to get the clear)

Hey Mike…I work concrete myself, mostly industrial formwork, and my best advice comes from you. I’m in the process of prep for a slab in my own garage…which is set on a 5’ frost wall. I’m debating placing foam under the slab, poly for sure. Should I do a separation between the slab and wall?
Sawcut and caulk? The slab is 24x26.
Also…what thickness would you recommend, and should I use wire mesh/ rebar? It’s mostly going to be used as a woodworking shop. And…how long should I wait before coating?

So I went to the E2U website and found a clear top coat like you lastly used. But I can’t seem to find a base coat. What’s the base coat you used just before the flake? I’m also assuming the base coat is still wet when you add the flake. What if I’m doing a 1200sqft area alone? Do I do a patch and then flake, scrape clean and do it again? Or can I get get it all done at one time?
Big thanks to who ever gets back to me 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I want to cover my garage floor soon. I have been in my house for 20 years wanting to do this. I have seen some disaster coatings and some crazy expensive coatings. After watching this I think I can do this myself and do a good job. Is there something I can do to fill the control joints? I prefer to have a full flat floor. Thank you.

We use this same crack repair material to fill expansion joints. th-cam.com/video/J21TImyZL98/w-d-xo.html

Hello Mike! Thanks for the video! So the first coat you applied was a tinted polyaspartic? Like E2U's Polyaspartic 85? Then after flake, the top coat is the same product without the tint? Thanks!

Would love to do my garage, but the thought of pulling 8 storage cabinets, rolling toolbox, work bench, etc, etc out of the garage BEFORE I even start prepping, is a huge deterrent.

I had a situation where I used Polycoats polyaspartic on a concrete floor , a 5 car garage. I’m 40 years in the business as a painting contractor and floor coatings specialist doing floors like urethane membranes over new plywood exterior decks with ground up rubber granules broadcast into self leveling urethane rubber is what I started doing. The granules penetrated into the rubber until it wouldn’t take anymore and then we swept off the excess and then put a pigmented top coat of urethane over the granules, so everything was very flexible as well as the top coat of urethane . But when I used this Polyaspartic I didnt have much help , it was very hard to put it down at the right Mil thickness so I wouldn’t get too much material buildup. My helper rolled the basecoat too heavy. By doing this , by the time you would broadcast the paint chips and as fine as they were ,they would pile up higher where the basecoat was put on heavier and they created peaks and valleys. The pot life or the grey base as well as the clear only gave me 15 min working time, I tried to roll it out like your video example keeping a wet edge. To look at it the next day especially with the garage doors open when the light hit the floor the roller marks were in all directions and very uneven very messy and looked very bad because the valleys excepted more clear as a puddle , and where the texture was heavier ,where the flakes piled up and dried up in the heavier base material that showed more text texture and less gloss. So I had high gloss and lower sheen all over the place as the light hit the floor . I ended up sanding the texture down to even out the floor where there were slick spots and where it looked too glossy . So the floor actually became smoother without the heavier texture of the piled flakes ,then I took an airless sprayer with a lower sheen Polyaspartic clear , and misted it over the floor in circular spray patterns to get rid of all the roller mark patterns It came out even finally, but with a matte sheen.
Polycoats material is way too quick setting for the roller marks to self level. If you dont have 5 men working in unison, you cant get a uniform finish. I finally looked into some Polyaspartic that I was told had longer pot life and a longer working time. I never end up doing any more floors with such a difficult material . Please tell me what you think about this and what material companies may have a better product ,so one man could work alone ,especially on a single car garage. These products are such a bullet proof material nothing would compare to it
    Thanks for any ideas

With the E2U , you have to add your own pigment to the clear correct ? Have you ever used any of the metallic pigment ? If so, how does it come out ? Thanks

hello mike, if i just scratched prepped a new concrete floor could i use a polyaspartic top coat right over it or over a prime coat...if i was going for concrete looking finish instead of a flake or painted look? thanks, looking into doing one for a good customer in a small garage where NO CARS will be going in and out
