I'm not a bug fan of the BK line but I have to admit it looked great after you where done. Vast improvement for sure. Thank you for taking the time to share the process.
I think I'll leave the coating on mine and just paint the scales green and wilson wrap the handle. I don't mind the blacked out look and I don't need the spine as a striker. GREAT VIDEO!
Yeah, and probably real late at night if you can find one that's open 24 hours. I want to do that to my BK7. One thing I did to the handle, which is like nearly a 0 on the grippyness scale, is I cut a length of bicycle inner tube, soaped the handle up a little (the fun part) and slid it on. You'll catch hell trying to get the thing on without KY or your favorite lube... I used the ribbed portion of the inner tube for extra grip. This works really great; I recommend it.
I bet your wife wasn't home when you turned her clothes dryer into a do it yourself rock tumbler and you only stopped because she was pulling into the driveway !! Well done sir : )
@@livingsurvival When I get caught doing something that my wife would have a fit over . Example Valentines Day a few years ago . I had a bag of lemons and a bottle of tequila . My plan was to have a few drinks with her and than go upstairs if you know what I mean wink wink . But she got home late and my bag of lemons was gone , which didn't matter to much because the bottle was empty . When she walk in and saw me sh*t faced she said . Why did you drink so much ? That's basically what she said I just left out the curse words . I looked her in the eyes or in the general direction and said . " Its not my fault its yours . I had no adult supervision !! " Please feel free to use this line next time you get busted by your wife . It doesn't work like a Jedi mind trick , " these are not the droids you're looking for " . In fact it doesn't really work at all . But it does break the ice , just be careful she doesn't push you in the hole : )
Nice Ben, was expecting your dryer to flip on it's side haha. Just got to see Angry Jackalopes video of this now hehe - Stone/Pigs head wash coming right up :p Thanks for the vid bro :D
Liam Thomson Idk I don't own a bk9. I stripped a knife once and it ruined the knife cuz i was new to this shit and since I haven't looked into it i just know it rusts like crazy
Man, that's a lot of work/time/resources and dryer abuse to put into a $100 knife. Hopefully Ka-bar will have more clearcoat Becker options available soon, like the sold out BK39. If you agree, contact them and let them know through the Ka-bar website contact option. I think many buyers would appreciate a alternative to the gritty black finish that looks like crap in short order of use.
Dude Ben I got that knife and the remora 2 days after I ordered feels like one might be I dknw kinda in a daZe Lol you got me also on the snugpak bunker and the poncho can't wait for that next package to come in omgaaaaaad prepping is addicting fuhhhh haha.
Everyone is using plastic gloves and plastic spoons! This stuff dissolves plastic and keeps wood and metal intact. A spoon is going to melt and leave some of the product inert. Just use a stick or something.
Living Survival thanks for the response. Yeah I've been practicing with a whetstone , it just takes some getting used to. Keep up the good videos my friend
Diamond stones are the fastest way to sharpen knife/tool steels. Any of the knife "experts" here on YT that criticize certain premium steels as hard to sharpen are oblivious to the diamond stone options.
Iratus Jackalope Mustard, lime juice, oranges, grapefruits, anything would give it a petina over the stonewash so if you did it in stripes or something it would look pretty dang cool.
wouldn't the steal rust? high carbon steal is not as rust resistant as stainless steel blades that's why they usually have a coating on them. Nice video by the way.
LOL admit it, you took it out of the dryer when your wife went off!! Looks good. Maybe get a barrel mount it on some legs and mount a hand crank next time.
Say Heah, Nice, and Thanx You for sharing, But I left my BK-9/BK-10 Combo stock. Yeah they show love Mark's, But both are in tip top sharp condition and you can tall that from the moment you pick one up. Infact I like the Love Look. ,, .
Mr Spades actually you've got it twisted. function before looks as the traction coating is simply put on there so they don't rust in shipment/warehouse. it causes friction and is better without it.
I used gun blueing on my BK9 after I stripped it. Love the look of gun blue on the 9 so much I also did it on my BK16.
So, I'm guessing that your wife wasn't home while you used the dryer as a rock tumbler...
John Burr 😂😂😂😂
That's great!!! Nice one man
I'm guessing the wife wasn't home..LOL!!!! Turned out great man.
I know that's right. Hahaha
ChiefPrepper haha
***** nope
Nice job on the homemade stonewashed finish.
Survival On Purpose thanks
I'm not a bug fan of the BK line but I have to admit it looked great after you where done. Vast improvement for sure. Thank you for taking the time to share the process.
***** Thanks man.
Great tutorial! I like that you used the dryer to roll it around! Just hope it didn't ruin it after a while in the dryer.
Jason McDaniel HAHA yeah
Dryers are basically just a big cylinder with holes in it driven by a belt. I’d never do it but I doubt it would hurt it much.
Great looking knife. Now I know how I'm going to do my knife. Thanks. Ronnie,Texas.
RDM1978 thx
Looks great! I did mine minus the stonewash. I’m going to get rid of thumb ramp.
I think I'll leave the coating on mine and just paint the scales green and wilson wrap the handle. I don't mind the blacked out look and I don't need the spine as a striker. GREAT VIDEO!
AWESOME BROTHER, JOB WELL DONE
That knife is sweet bro!
Jarhead6 thanks brother
Should use a dryer at the coin laundry.
Yeah, and probably real late at night if you can find one that's open 24 hours.

Was about to comment that
They'd get hella pissed lol
If you went to a laundry mat and used their dryer for this your blade would probably break due to karma.
turned out really nice Ben !
the mi woodsman thx
So much for the gaskets in the sink's garbage disposal.
Nice job! That looks pretty good.
Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors thx
knife turned out real nice!
Clothes dryer..... love your commitment !!!
+A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge thanks.
Man, the dedication!!!
Nice finish! Looks cool Ben! Cheers, Marc
Scouting Free thx
Awesome tutorial. That paint remover is some wicked stuff.
MI Timberwookie YES. IT. IS.
I love it man. Low tech awesomeness
The Daily Shooter thanks, worked ok
I thought the knife looked pretty good right after the acid wash. Albeit, the sanding on the top and handle were necessary.
Not if you leave that particular chemical on for twenty min .... no sanding at all ....
I put a whole bunch of river rocks in a 5 gallon bucket and black washed a my D2 Fighter and it came out sweet.
+specopsbrat hell ya
I bet your wife wasn't home when you turned her clothes dryer into a do it yourself rock tumbler and you only stopped because she was pulling into the driveway !! Well done sir : )
That about right.

Perfect or not, pretty damn good looking
nice job, gonna be doing this to my BK7 soon. Wife will probably hate the dryer idea, but oh well, lol.
LMAO
Looks good Ben
Nice Ben, was expecting your dryer to flip on it's side haha. Just got to see Angry Jackalopes video of this now hehe - Stone/Pigs head wash coming right up :p
Thanks for the vid bro :D
Chris Lee HAHA
That was a great how to thanks for sharing
Turtle Bushcraft thx
That's gonna rust very quickly depending on where you live. You have to put a new coating or something on so it won't rust.
Liam Thomson Idk I don't own a bk9. I stripped a knife once and it ruined the knife cuz i was new to this shit and since I haven't looked into it i just know it rusts like crazy
I used a sandblaster on mine. got rid of those machine markings and gave it a nice, rough hue.
nice.

This is now 2018. The bk-39 shows discontinued at midway & Amazon. Did they stop making it or was it just not able to compete with the bk9?
Dude Ben I got that knife and the remora 2 days after I ordered feels like one might be I dknw kinda in a daZe Lol you got me also on the snugpak bunker and the poncho can't wait for that next package to come in omgaaaaaad prepping is addicting fuhhhh haha.
I may do the same in this vid for stripping cept I think I might tape the handle .. I dknw.
Nathanial Roy haha yeap!
Why don't they offer this as a factory option? Because it looks damn great... I'm going to do this with mine as soon as I get it.
makes it look good!
Looks sweet, how do you sharpen your blades? Do you have any videos on that?
cfred841 no videos, I just use a sharpening stone.
What kinda oil?
Doesn't scrubbing it with a wire brush run the risk of scratching the knife? Excuse my ignorance
Cody L well a knife can get scratched but you can sand it out.
Everyone is using plastic gloves and plastic spoons! This stuff dissolves plastic and keeps wood and metal intact. A spoon is going to melt and leave some of the product inert. Just use a stick or something.
Good looking blade brother
Big Brown thx
HOOONEEEEEY!!!!???? ......" I'm gonna turn the dryer into a metal tumbler!........
Hahaha I bet you fucked that dryer up! That’s something I would do too haha
How long would it take just rolling it with my foot
+nick kuttian a few hours most likely.
How do you sharpen your bk9? I have a bk7 and any tips would be welcome thanks
wet stone
Living Survival thanks for the response. Yeah I've been practicing with a whetstone , it just takes some getting used to. Keep up the good videos my friend
Diamond stones are the fastest way to sharpen knife/tool steels. Any of the knife "experts" here on YT that criticize certain premium steels as hard to sharpen are oblivious to the diamond stone options.
Get a carbide sharpener for quick resharpening and a leather belt to strop the blade with works too.
thats how i stonewash, it works very good!
FishingTheGreatLakes great, thanks for watching
Fun little project, a little extreme in the application perhaps :)
TRUNKBACK JIM needed to be more extreme, barely stonewashed it after an hour.
Can someone plz explain to me how this works? Thanks
soooooo what would happen if you stone washed it and then did the mustard thing????? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
Iratus Jackalope Mustard, lime juice, oranges, grapefruits, anything would give it a petina over the stonewash so if you did it in stripes or something it would look pretty dang cool.
hmmmmmm perhaps a a tiger-blade?!!!!!! TIGER BLADE!!!!!!!
Iratus Jackalope DO IT
I will do this to my BK9 and Film it... :) (COLOR ME INSPIRED!)
+Iratus Jackalope no pun intended...I am gonna love to see the result!
That was great man kick ass.
I actually decided to blue mine
Looks great! :)
SurvivalTech Nord thx
looks great
what exactly does stonewashing do?
As far as I know it just gives that finish. Not sure about any protection benefits, just a desirable finish
it does give it a nice look, from what i can tell, its main purpose is to hide small scratches that form on the outside
bk9 is beast! cool mod
+KALZONE850 thanks!
wouldn't the steal rust? high carbon steal is not as rust resistant as stainless steel blades that's why they usually have a coating on them. Nice video by the way.
Andy's Video Log coconut oil works a treat at rust prevention
The MoFF so I can use coconut oil on kife edges?
Sure. Mineral oil works fine too and it's cheaper. Just look in the health products section of a grocery store.
Cool but won't that scratch the knife blade.
yeah, usually when a blade is stonewashed, you have to go and resharpen the edge
Did you buy the BK9 from Amazon or Ka-Bar website, or some other site? Just wondering..
Josh Cook Amazon.
Okay, thanks!
LOL admit it, you took it out of the dryer when your wife went off!! Looks good. Maybe get a barrel mount it on some legs and mount a hand crank next time.
Jerry Morris LOL, just don't have the money to replace it :)
You know, you REALLY should show you putting the knife into the rock-filled bucket, dude. You skipped that step altogether.
Did it cost you $500 for a new dryer? Lol. That's just nuts.
+NewHampshire Bound hah, nope dryer was fine.
that looked easy. i took my coating off with a razor blade ..... looks pretty sweet tho.
Did it workout in you're favor or did it ruin the blade?
Hope you got tumbler, now. Lol.
im tryin this
Cool. Now tell us how to put a stonewash finish on a bk9. Because that looks exactly the same as before.
I'm guessing you're single..😂. There ain't no woman alive that would allow that hocus pocus you did with the dryer.
LOL
i give u tip . necx time try with oil
Say Heah, Nice, and Thanx You for sharing, But I left my BK-9/BK-10 Combo stock. Yeah they show love Mark's, But both are in tip top sharp condition and you can tall that from the moment you pick one up. Infact I like the Love Look. ,, .
Cool!
Declan Mcgillivray thank you!
i've watch video on stipping ...... then we have that in common sir.
the terrible rabbit of death, Your grammar was so bad that it wasn’t even funny
That’s great but you screwed those shitty scales back on it!
damn, i hope that blanket wasn't alpaca wool....chaching!
Still not sure why you would take off that nice coating.......
Azvoltman comes off with heavy use anyway and some believe it causes friction or traction when cutting.
MY FUCKING EARS
I have a good idea for knife makers. Don’t paint knives black.
Looks before function...not really my cup of tea. But Im not american, wich probably explains it.
Mr Spades actually you've got it twisted. function before looks as the traction coating is simply put on there so they don't rust in shipment/warehouse. it causes friction and is better without it.
