Wow! Thank you for sharing! A lot of fun watching those skiers going down-hill with that old technology! 👍👍👍

Funny you should say old technology… and it certainly makes sense considering the advances since ‘52.
But if you look at it another way, that tech was absolutely new, state-of-the-art. For 10 thousand years (likely more) the “why” of skiing was practical not recreational, and the “how” of skiing was free heel.
So, if you look at the wider scope of history regarding skis, the alpine (captive heel) binding and boot combinations we see here were (in ‘52 and still are today) a last-minute update. Cheers!

3:32 I got such a kick out of seeing #13, just like a hotshot resort skier today, adjusting his glove on the in-run!

Действительно отважные люди - при таком снаряжении и скоростях. А уже электронный отсчёт времени.

1952? Unlikely, the "egg" downhill position was 1st used by Jean Vuarnet at the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley

They had no metal edges they were skiing on wooden boards 😮

    • @sethfrankel3542

By 1952 metal edges were quite common. They were invented in the 20s and gradually took a hold solidly by the ‘36 Olympics (in which metal edges were used in the Games). Post-WWII they were in significant usage for recreational skiing and certainly in timed racing. No doubt, the equipment, especially boot/binding combination, were crude by today’s standards, but edge control was a safety feature that took hold by the filming of these races.

In fact, edges were sold in sections and they routed out an edge groove, then screwed the edge sections into place. Quite crude, but effective. Yes safety and control, but a necessity as the growth in popularity added to packed snow and ice on the piste. If you only skied fresh unbroken snow, no need for a metal edge. I have an old pair of skis that have an inlay of mahogany for the edge, I believe they are pre-war 1940 vintage .

Doing this in leatherboots and planks of wood takes great skill and a lot of bravery.

They'll teach the kids that skiing was banned because it was not SAFE.
