Paula Rego lies in this interview about not knowing that Victor Willing was married when she met him, and claims falsely that he wasn't living with his wife when their affair began. (He and his wife Hazel Whittington had been a couple for many years and lived together in a maisonette in Bayswater.) 2. Rego also exaggerates the prevalence of illegal abortions in Portugal during the 20th century to make her personal life look 'normal'. (She wanted to keep sleeping with Victor Willing without contraception, she had several abortions because he threatened to go back to his wife if Rego kept any of the babies.) Even after the full legalization in Portugal in 2007, Portugal has the world's second lowest rate in 2021 (0.2 per 1000 women).
@@cg8397 Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. You make good points. Sounds like Rego doesnt want to make herself look bad. Interviewer doesnt ask any hard questions , just stroking her ego by listening basically. Shame, but still a great series, i still learnt alot. Thanks for the information . Ill always take what people say with a pinch of salt... maybe a tablespoon.
Its well known the abuse she suffered back in Portugal and maybe explains the inaccuracy on the speach .dictatorship last 41 years not 20 or 28 ..Calling the mother of cow , well , not nice but what do I know? I will keep the arrist paula Rego on my memory , the human conditions ,the dramas, Ileave .Peace to her soul.

I just found out Paula Rego passed away in 2022. It really makes me sad. I had always wished somehow we would meet. Her art is perfect.
