Nice comparisons, Brodie! FYI, The Hockey Guy recently did this as well on his whiteboard. Unfortunately it was hard to see the fine print in the phone watching Shannon’s stream, your pie charts were a big help. However, Shannon did include the numbers for MLS, which were quite, quite interesting. If only he’d included the CFL numbers… I’d love to compare attendance numbers for cities with CFL, NHL, NBA, and/or MLB teams. I’d love to see the historical trends on the percentages if they are available. Obviously, everyone started out with ticket sales at nearly 100%, with some concessions, and sponsors would have been limited to anyone advertising in the game programs or media guides for a long time. I’d like to draw your attention to total ticket sales for the NFL. If you compare NBA and NHL attendances, a winter team averaging 16k would take five games to hit an amount equal to a single game NFL of 80k. Based on those numbers, 8 crowds of 80k is equal to about 40 crowds for the NBA or NHL-almost a season’s worth of home games. Some seasons, baseball teams will average the 16k as well--but they will have twice the totals of the NBA or NHL or the NFL-two seasons worth. Sometimes, the MLS teams also can average 16k-but with a 16 home game season, a handful of MLS teams can rival a poor-drawing NFL team for a season’s total attendance. I’d love to see a full set of attendance comparisons for all the sports over the years. Thanks for the breakdowns. I’m not an economist, but these numbers are just as important to sports teams as their stat averages are compared to their league or city rivals.
This would be much easier to understand as bar charts. You can figure out the absolute dollar breakdowns across sports of the different components, but it takes work.

The NBA viewership in the USA is down by around 42% this year, but the deal they made with Amazon and NBC made them surpassed the MLB in revenue. If you combine the USA and Asian Viewers of the 2024 World Series about 30 million viewers, it is more than the highest NBA Finals with Michael Jordan in American Viewership about 29 million. The NBA in the USA is declining by a lot, but the NBA is making more money than ever and the players are getting paid more than ever even when adjusted by inflation. 75% of NBA followers on social media are outside of USA. I daresay that the original Winnipeg Jets were stronger in Winnipeg and its population of currently 800,000 than in Arizona and the nearly 5 million in the urban area in and around Phoenix. Gary Bettman has focused his time at the head of the NHL trying to find a national American broadcast rights deal, essentially giving them away for a stretch, while in Canada the rights are subject to competitive fights, especially for the Hockey Night in Canada rights Saturday nights.
