This is actually one instance where I agree with Trump. We don't want any unsolicited immigration of that comet beyond our atmosphere. It can free to take pictures of earth from a distance though😜!
A dwarf planet is still a planet... Just of a dwarf type. Just like a dwarf star is still a star. Therefore, Pluto, and others, are now planets. Time to get with the program.
"Comets are space fossils." That's a _wonderful_ analogy you put together there, Mr. Nice! Quick to explain, easy to understand. I'm gonna start using that.
Personal astrophysicists in-the-making/first day of school....here...uhh... Neil, you have inspired me to do what I love i.e. astronomy, physics first sem. I used to think this carrer was out of reach, so I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Maybe I can meet you one day, shake hands and say so in person, maybe have you autograph my diploma. Now that's a dream. lol
Even into the 80's there was a horror movie called Night of the Comet and that was the plot line. We pass into the tail and it pretty much wipes out everyone on Earth leaving a couple of valley girls that thought it just wasn't very cool and stayed inside, and a bunch of zombies. I wonder if people still believed that, or someone was making fun of the whole idea.
EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUSE ME..... Night of the Comet is a CHRISTMAS MOVIE, not a horror! lol ( no, really. it takes place at xmas time - pay attention to the beginning when theyre at the movie theater)
I loved that movie as a kid. I always wondered if it was based on Halley's comet, even though the movie came out two years before Halley's comet passed Earth in 1986.
Day of the Triffids, a British production. A green comet blinds most of humanity and giant meat eating plants, called Triffids, took over. It was an excellent production for the times, eighties, I think.
This is great guys. It's good to see down to earth talking about astronomical subjects. It can kinda help the lay people. Actually informative thanks!!!!
The comet tail pointing away from the sun even on the way out was something I learned about in middle school and found it so hard to believe. Really thought they were pulling my leg.
I remember seeing Halley's comet when I was 14 yrs old in science class. And one thing I've always hoped is that I can make it to 90 to be one of the few to see it twice.... Great topic guys.!!!
I was 3 when Halley came by. So I had no idea whatsoever. I hope that I will make it until 79 and even close my eyes for the last time when I see Halley.
I'm in the UK and I sae this at 7am and it was incredible. I was driving but with a dash cam. I will try and download it and post as proof later today.
Not to belittled Chuck, but as a comedian he is smart and understand lot of stuff Neil explain, love these videos, science with humor just brilliant, keep it up!
Great video! Thanks for the Cyanogen info. Whew, I can put the umbrella away. My greatest takeaway however is "Comets are Space Fossils"! Thank you Chuck. Thank you all.
Even in a small town, it'll be difficult to see this beauty. Usually what happens when astrological events happen, it's overcast / bad weather where I live.
Love you guys! Thank you for your humor injected science talk! BTW, As a kid, I was fascinated with characters like Spock, and Kato, who btw in addition to his amazing Martial Art skills was the chauffeur of the modified 1965 Chrysler Imperial AKA Black Beauty for the show. I've always enjoyed the celestial visits such as Haley's Comet, Hale Bop, and recent Neo-Wise. I would love to hear your thoughts on the Chicxulub event. ( I have friends that are Jurassic period extinction deniers cause and effect.) Ha...
11:21 I suggest to change it to 'pennant' then. (tapering flag, although inverse taper in this case.) As pennants can be directed by wind, the 'pennant' of a comet would be by solar wind.
I was lucky enough to see Haley for a few nights in 1986, working night shift in the forests of Fort Nelson BC...Canada. I would turn the lights off on the logging equipment and just be amazed by this gracious celestial body. And BTW It is almost ready to be heading back towards us in a couple years already...time flies
44,000 views in 12 hours! You guys rock! (Pardon the comet related pun) Making science cool again! I will be forever thankful to you two! Kind regards from the UK
Seriously, every single video he has to say it, though he never ever will poke the hole in the EAU's criteria for classifying it as a dwarf planet in the first place. It's completely flawed and arbitrary at best, at worst, it requires classifying Earth, Mars, and Jupiter as dwarf planets as well.
Fun Fact: Mark Twain was born in 1835, the year of an appearance of Halley's Comet. In 1909, Twain predicted that he had come in with the comet and thus would go out with the comet. The next year he died one day after Halley's Comet had again reached its perihelion.
Could you do an explainer on the discrepancies related to the galaxy count and ages of said galaxies by the JWT versus what was theoretically proposed and it's indications?
The Green Comet -- sounds like a 1950's science fiction movie -- Watch out for the pod people in the flower bed taking over the small town! Our hero is, of course, a kid with an anti-comet umbrella, and his dog. The dog and the boy both narrowly miss getting taken over by the pod people..... (What, you didn't like Invaders from Mars, or whichever movie that is almost the plot of?) Haha. -- Man, anti-cme5 umbrella, that's people very unclear on the concept. -- Loved this episode. It/s good to see Dr. Neil down to earth, laughing, just a regular guy. And Chuck is awesome.
Neil I fell in love with you in the Cosmos series ( that I have on DVD’s) I watch many of startalk videos,I must say the two of you are very entertaining as well as informative. I love the way you explain the solar system that I can understand
Indeed, Guns N’ Roses has put out an album in this century. Albeit, early in this century, but in this century nonetheless. The album was Chinese Democracy, released in 2008.
To see all know I am so curious by nature about nearly everything I walked past, But I'm also a pothead. Sometimes people don't have the patience to explain things to me and I appreciate this so much cuz I have so many questions
"...goes well past Neptune, the last planet in the solar system...deal with it." LOL! Speaking of the 'comet pills', the Canadian series Murdoch Mysteries weekly episode last night had Hailey's Comet showing up in 1910 Toronto. The very first scene was in the police station, a man of science had been brought in for taking those 'comet pills' from a scammer, saying that his hobby was outer space. The character was played by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.
I like how the professor rewinds humans undestanding of things for the sake of goog comparisons. Brilliant Its obvious there are more things we need clarification on 👽.
Dr. Tyson, suggestion, please do a segment about "Population" from 2 sides where some people say we need more than 1 earth to sustain human population right now versus people say population is declining.
LOL at Chuck with the Guns N Roses reference. GN'R hit the big time in 1988 with their debut studio album, Appetite for Destruction (which was released in 1987 but didn't get much attention until the following year), which is the best selling debut Rock album of all time. GN'R's last release was Chinese Democracy in 2008, but that was not with the "classic" line up, as Axl and the rest of the band had yet to make amends. In 2016, most of the original members have rejoined and they've been touring together ever since.
Guns put out an album, Chinese Democracy, around 2010. In my opinion, it has 2.48 good songs. Axl was flighty with playing shows in the 90s. However, saw them in 2017 and they played a blistering 3 hour set.
Lub you Niel. I feel your pain and effort in laymen to pop references. His response was just a few light-years off... but still in social context as far as I could tell. This channel is good but would be better if Neil could make a leap from laymen to simple minded. Yes. That would be better. Love you guys. Keep the topic on point. :)
The year mark Twain was born Haleys comet, passed within 7/100th of an au. It passed ahead of the earth. And is still the most spectacular comet event in recorded history. I saw comet hailbop and it was very spectacular and in the sky a long time. But was no where near as close
If the Oort Cloud extends halfway to the nearest star (Alpha Cen), is it conceivable that Alpha Cen also has its own "cloud" of frozen objects which might mingle with the Oort?
Lauren Hill released a live record in 2001 (so this century). This was actually my first experience of Lauryn Hill and I thought she was a folk singer because it was just her playing guitar, and I like folk music. (Later on I realized that I had heard some other songs but I didn’t know they were hers at the time).
I once showed my friend a dust mote and said, "imagine a full solar system inside a little ball of dust" then I explained the Oort Cloud and the comparative size of our Local Group of galaxies. Its sounds crazy, though that does not make it any less true.
Vacuum consists of fabric, permittivity space, permeability space. If we take 4 molecules in 2x2 matrix form.2 molecules up and 2 molecules down. The gap at the middle of those 4 molecules is permittivity space and the gap between 2 molecules is permeability space. In other words, fabric and permittivity space and permeability space are attached to each other in a way that,if we take the light,it is a particle in the fabric and a wave in the permeability space and permittivity space. But,the motion of wave energy range through permeability space, permittivity space is instant. We know that the light has the compressing property so,the permeability space, permittivity space and fabric compresses in a way that compression is maximum for maximum light.Permittivity range is nothing but the permittivity of a medium increases with increase in it's velocity. Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson sir, please tell me whether the above theory is correct or not.Thank you, Sir.
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a... green comet?
This is actually one instance where I agree with Trump. We don't want any unsolicited immigration of that comet beyond our atmosphere. It can free to take pictures of earth from a distance though😜!
Well, you are not far from advocating for his other takes with that.@@user-yc3fw6vq5n

Saw the comet through my 8-inch telescope today in Cyprus. And now I know even more about it thanks to you. Fantastic!
I love the chemistry you have in these conversations, laughing while learning with friends in the process 😁🤪
I love the comedy of their dynamic! This is a perfect fusion of my two favorite things: Learning & Laughing!
Absolute public treasures.

"down to earth"😂
The comet tail pointing away from the sun even on the way out was something I learned about in middle school and found it so hard to believe. Really thought they were pulling my leg.
Instead they were pushing it.😊
I think I was 12, I found out after making fun of the special effects of the
intro/outro to "SPACE 1999" for showing a comet moving tail first....
Some starcraft going on there in your profile picture, nice!
so i guess it starts off as a tail and leaves as a horn?
doomsday comet.. meaning the ELITE will blame their agendas on the comet
I enjoyed Chuck's comedic analogies in this explainer video. Keep it coming, Neil and Chuxk!
