I like this episode but there's one thing I never got. If past Lister ended up with no kidneys that means our Lister at the start of the episode had no kidneys. But don't we see Asclepiusbot take them? What did he steal if he had no kidneys in the first place? Seems like an obvious paradox.
Good point, and I hate it when I miss stuff like that. I guess it's possible that they weren't Lister's kidneys--maybe they were older ones that were preserved in formaldehyde.
I guess it depends on how you view these stable time loop stories. Perhaps in the original timeline, Asclepius took Lister's kidneys, but in the altered timeline, he didn't. There's also a fan theory that Asclepius was actually never trying to butcher Lister or Cat. That the reason he tranq-darted them was because he scanned them from afar and recognised that Lister had no kidneys and was in need of a transplant, and Cat was a viable donor. Then Rimmer and Kryten started attacking him before he actually did any surgery. Of course, that theory would also mean Asclepius just randomly had 2 extra kidney-like organs lying around.
I love how high your voice got when you mention the Scutter having turning lights, so cute the both of you. :D & Damn that Robot Doctor needs it's own Horror Movie.
Whatever they ,made Asclepiusbot out of horror movies should do it more often. Asclepiusbot was genuinely terrifying despite being almost a gag character.
Asclepius' Design is so fucking good, Legit, that droid is one of my fave sci-fi characters visually, totally sucks that such a great look got like 2 minutes of screen time.
My only exposure to RED DWARF is through your vlogs despite owning the now out-of-print DVD box set some where around my house. Unlike most people, I don't mind spoilers at all and will watch the full episodes when and if I ever find said box set. I will say this: I adore fully non-human creature characters who are also brimming with personality which I blame on my lifelong exposure towards and love for Japanese movie and television monsters. On that last note, I'm also a sucker for practical and analog creature effects despite the value CGI can offer. It's a shame you rarely see such realized creature characters in American entertainment anymore beyond predictable and equally unimpressive cartoons or barely seen and virtually lifeless CGI cameos (the dragons from GAME OF THRONES) though it's nice to see British shows can still pull such uniqueness off as seen with this episode's two robot characters: Snaky was adorable and I'm glad he wasn't unceremoniously killed at the end like a lot of guest star characters so often do in high concept series these days (see any show on Adult Swim). However, Ascepius was amazing and looks like one of the more intimidating POWER RANGER monsters if it was allowed to be as terrifying as such characters are in theory. His demented design and likewise demented demeanor is so nightmarish magnificent that I hope he returns in some fashion in the future.
I loved seeing the bazookoids again. The escape scene from the space station really reminded me of some of the older episodes where they go salvaging and run into trouble. Also the fact that Rimmer actually fought Asclepius (albeit with Kryten as a shield) shows how much they've gone through in deep space.
This really was a great episode. A number of RD episodes feel like 2 completely different stories stitched together to meet the episode length, but this one was nearly perfect.
just picturing the possibility of a series xiii but every episode is a different joke pilot for a spinoff on some other group of not-aliens or robots met by the crew in the series' run...one episode with the kinatawowi gelfs, one week with the simulants, one week revisiting the holoship crew, one that's a soap opera about the Red Dwarf vending machines, one revisiting Ace Rimmer Space Adventurer, endless possibilities
Considering how long this video has been up, I'm surprised that nobody else in the comments seem to have brought up the fact that Snacky has a prominent role in the secret Red Dwarf area for the video game, Lego Dimensions. In one of the Fantastic Beasts levels, Snacky can be reached by the Tardis when the player reaches Red Dwarf. Snacky must be repaired to access new areas in Red Dwarf and will give you a Minikit. By the way, I would love to see you do a Let's Play of the game and would be happy to help you get 100 percent completion in the secret Red Dwarf area if you are interested.
A Thrill Kill reference? And here I was thinking I was the only person who hadn't forgotten that game! In 1998 I went to Gen Con with my dad and they were doing promo for it. My dad and I got pictures taken with two of the characters (don't know names) I think a nurse and a maid? In...um...compromising positions with bondage gear. Still have the polaroids!
Sounds like two variations of Belladonna. One of my first videos on this channel was a Thrill Kill retrospective--for some reason I like to reference the bit where I talk about Dr. Faustus whenever I come across a "deranged doctor" sort of character in anything I'm covering =P
Kind of surprised you didn't mention the hilarious outtake of the Snacky unit falling over when they shot the silhouette escape scene, as well as the actor's reaction to learning there was a guy in there in the special features.
I'd like to see Snacky come back in a future episode extremely upgraded and knowledgable. Maybe make him a cosmic threat a la VGER in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
I'm sorry this isn't relevant to the video I'm posting this on, but I have been in the mood to watch classic Resident Evil Let's Plays as I play through it myself and your playthrough as Jill is the one I remembered the most. It's hard to believe it's been 10 years, but I wanted to say thank you for producing that series back then and it's awesome to see you're still at it. I hope well for your content and definitely will be coming back to watch as much of your stuff as I can :)
@@Cyborcat I was in the middle of watching the first video and saw that comments had been disabled, and went to your latest video figuring you would be more likely to see the comment. Just wanted to let you know your videos are nostalgic for me and I appreciate them all :)
I was actually quite relieved that that they couldn’t use Cat’s kidney. I work in the veterinary field, and a lot of senior cats succumb to kidney disease. I know they probably wouldn’t address it, but still. In fact, Cat looks like he’s even skinnier than he used to be! Could be hyperthyroidism. Hope they carry an ample supply of methimazole on Red Dwarf! All jokes aside, could’ve been a good opportunity to highlight that cats do share 90 % of their DNA with humans.
This is the episode where for the first time ever the Cat grated on me. i grew up watching this Show and The Cat was always my favourite character so its really unfortunate. The how could you! whingy reaction to Lister as he walks out the room because lister wanted his Kidney was the first moment i realised something felt off with the character. which for me is similar to the issues some had with Kryten's Wingy voice in series 7. and it gets worse in Can of Worm.

I thought our Lister had some old, fake kidneys that only worked for a few days which were switched out with past-Lister's real ones
He was injected with a microchip that did the same function that kidneys do--nothing that would look like kidneys.
It's red dwarf it's all plot hole rule of funny hehehe but your not wrong

I would die for the Skutters =P
I have a red dwarf t-shirt that says captain bollocks
That skuttle is a better driver than 90% of the people I see on the road
Omg when he signaled when he turned, was too cute!
I love how it just implies that Lister was just left on Rimmer’s bunk this whole time and Rimmer just, let him.
How many times has Rimmer had “professional disagreements” with the ship’s machines again?
Snacky is my No. 1 character I want to make a return appearance. After all, he should still be on the crew!
I would die for Snacky.
Jesus that doctor robot is something right out of dead space

Oh Dena! You'll never escape the shadow of Thrill Kill ;)
Glad I'm not the only one who felt like this episode was only 5 minutes long.
That's pretty much the opposite of what I said.
This really was a great episode. A number of RD episodes feel like 2 completely different stories stitched together to meet the episode length, but this one was nearly perfect.
I love your reviews so much!
I love this series and this episode is great especially Snacky ! It's also nice to see another female fan of Red Dwarf!
Next time: one of my all time favourite episodes!
Good to hear you mention Thill Kill again. That was the first review i ever saw of your work, back in 2008. Christ I'm old, just remembering that.
I have a feeling Red Dwarf is gonna pull another Kryten on us and make Snacks a regular character when season 13 comes out

I find it so nice that at the very beginning of the episode you can just see kryten pushing lister into the lift
Who doesn't want a snacky the snack robot in their life.

Snacky is best girl

I haven't actually seen any of the behind-the-scenes stuff from this season yet.
@@@Cyborcat
Oh I see, when you get the chance watch them there's some enjoyable stuff
Sounds like it ^.^
Hahaha, somehow I never noticed the skutter signallng until you mentioned it!
Finally Red Dwarf is backkk

7:21 Haha of course Cat helps himself to Listers food. :)
Captain Bollocks FTW!!

Oh, that's right. I used to get a lot of randos complaining that I was talking in it, so I disabled comments in the first video.
I was about to comment on how even Rimmer thinks Rimmer is an idiot, then he topped himself at the end. That's ol' Arnie J in a nutshell, ain't it?
6:03 my dad had a theory that Asclepius isn't dead, cos the saucer doesn't blow up like the rest of the space station, just breaks off away.
I have snacky on the red dwarf 12 app
I still use him
Snacky was brilliant!!!

Red Dwarf meets Priest of Mars 🤪
The stasis booth time travel a call back to stasis leak perhaps?
Dr Sizzer hands.

I want a Skutter for a pet!
Know what, this episode weren't half bad. Maybe I've been too harsh on these later seasons. Mmmmmaybe
Why does Rimmer keep saying Me Laddo?
I don't know why the new seasons get such hate maybe not as good the classic obviously but there good.
How must IQ does Lister still have by time of this Ep. ??
