This is a great example of why your channel is one of the most valuable channels on TH-cam today. You constantly teach people by your example that you don't have to have the latest and greatest to have a great farming operation. Instead of building a new building, you make use of what you have. Whether it's your chicken trailer, your feed and water dishes from cut off barrels or that scrap lumber which can be used for everything, you show people how they can save money while providing themselves with the infrastructure they need. There's a long way and a lot of money between what's pretty and what works.

Pete I love your channel for your humbleness and intelligence. You aren’t buying new expensive tractors, building new “Dream shop’s” and you make an emphasis on farming as a business. You are very relatable compared to other channels. Thanks for keeping your originality on your channel.

Two years ago I found your videos and started raising pigs. We now farrow 5 sows and just invested in a new farrowing pen setup (6 stalls with covered shelters, 3 pens and a "paddock" area for humans to move around in).

      How much did it cost?

    • @bjcombs1989

@vadanadav I spent about 4k for new 2 5/8 pipe, 1k for new tin, 1.5k for panels and about 3k on labor. I have a skid steer with post driver, mobile welder and all the tools needed already. About 10k total investment overall.

25 years ago, I used to furrow in a 10 sow furring barn on concrete bedded with straw. Clean them every day. If I were to do it again, I would build a raised approximately 6 inch high pen approximately 7' x 7' with a 2 foot aisle around each pin for the manure to escape then you clean the aisle, not the pen. I always enjoyed raising pigs years ago.

Used to run a computer business. We came in for another company to help configure a new network of systems for running a third business. The customer expected the new system to run perfectly with all new hardware and software AND networking on day one. It never does. They had sold their old system. Now, I do understand that they did this partly to fund the new stuff, but they found out quickly how bad an idea it was.
Have an idea, make a plan, adapt, use old systems in parallel for at least six months, adapt some more. They were not my customer, but we tried to help them and all they did was get angrier and angrier. Having to fix other people's messes taught me lots of valuable lessons I'm glad I didn't have to learn the hard way by making them ourselves.

Moving the water back of course. then you open up the entire side for the pig area. Should be just as easy to feed an clean out. move the cattle outside as usual.

That is an interesting idea Rhonda. Thanks. I worry the hay would not be sufficiently protected from the weather. But it got me thinking; we are only utilizing about half of each side for feeding. If I cleared the junk out of the bay adjacent to the winter pigs and utilized the whole length of it for feeding, then I could eliminate feeding on the side where we want the farrowing pens to go, and the hay would stay well protected from the weather.

You could buy second hand shipping containers to store your stuff in… keep what you need and recycle the rest ….. instant storage at a set price
Good luck with the barn conversion… hopefully all on film

Hi Pete! Ken here from Nova Scotia. I think your aiming towards the right idea now. Building with what you have already will be cheaper and something that just makes better sense.

Very sage advice! This is the way we do things too since we never have the capitol to do the big things first. It has generally worked out really well this way.

I love ya, Pete. I no longer farm, but you remind me of all the joys (and headaches) I had when I did. You're my peace and inspiration. I don't miss farming so much, as long as I can watch you.

I love the idea Pete. Why assume the additional risk when you can put your toe into the water by reconfiguring and utilizing what you all ready own outright. Makes solid business sense. After all, the one principal of business that never expires, is that debt kills when the risk is measured with expectations of optimum sales.

Another major added benefit having consolidated operations; decreasing your work effort in frigid months 😊

2/27/23;..utilizing existing 'barn'...more little🐖 piggies...😋 Ok Pete, clean out 300 (?) pieces of 'junk' (tools, rakes, pipes, plows, blades, wire etc..) & where do you put those tools? So make a 3-sided 'shed', slope roof attached to existing location...other side of same wall. Or..consolidation over in your tractor & round bale storage. Right? What, no clutter around 'beautiful' tractors (some work & some don't...). Humm...I see another building in your future...✅️💪🪚🔧👷

As a former architect student and have an Associate degree in architectural engineering from Alfred state. This is my favorite of your vids. But especially because I'm getting Tamworth piglets soon. I been around farms all my life, but that's not same as having a farm. So, I've researching on the barn designs. Thank you, you've help me out and gave me some insights and thoughts on how I want move forward. Thank you.
