    Thank you, came across you by accident. I am rusty, and old. And I knew Israel when I lived in Hawaii, and that song is true to my heart. Even as a holy guy who is back on mainland. I cry sometimes when I play it, and I’ve met and played with brothers, Cazimero 20 years ago at Carnegie Hall. I’m trying to play again and bumping into your video was awesome for me tonight all by myself on Friday picking up my old 25 year old G string concert. Thank you sir.🤙🏼😎

    Steven, I've been on a Hawaiian rabbit hole when looking for videos to learn how to play the 'ukulele, came across many Hawai'i 78 and not only did you justice with your beautiful voice and technique, but also a passion and love for sharing your craft and culture. I subscribed to your channel, hoping to learn more songs and about Hawai'i. Mahalo from Catalonia!

      Steven- now that you’ve introduced finger picking so well, I’d like to request hearing you do a tutorial on The Queen’s Jubilee. I am so inspired by Dennis Kamakahi’s version on his album ‘Ohana - it’s hauntingly beautiful. Am trying to teach myself how to slow it down and finger pick this mele - I’m sure your version would be amazing. Mahalo! Keep up the excellent videos ;)

    Hey Stephen, I think this might be new for TH-cam or not. I just don’t do it enough. But I hooked up with someone just like you in a different genre and got comfortable with some music and I was able to tip him or contribute. I couldn’t find that with you. Not that I’m worth a reply, but if I missed some thing I enjoyed, your media and it helped me thank you

      @@joey7899 Mahalo! That is the first custom they built for me back in 2006. It is a Pea Li’i Super Tenor...all premium O’ahu koa. Kolohala wood on the trim and rosette. Yes, that is a prototype volume/tone dual concentric pot which controls the LR Baggs Element pickup. This was built before ‘ukulele pickups were even a thing so LR Baggs created this pickup for it...still haven’t found its equal in amplified tone til this day ;)

      @@StevenEspaniola so cool! What a neat instrument to have.

    • @StevenEspaniola
      @StevenEspaniola  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joey Grieb thx!! Actually more special than you know ;) the koa that was used to build this instrument came from a koa tree that fell on a house during a storm. A firefighter friend called Joe and said he could have the koa stump if he came and got it...he saved it for a while before using some of it to build this awesome instrument.

    Mahalo bruddah Steven for simplifying this challenging intro by explaining the three chords it's based upon ~ and that was key. Uddah instruction videos were okay but your approach was no ka oi. Don't know if you remembah but this is Johnny Kealoha Pal and we both played at Hulaville from time to time. I played uke, steel and geetah wid Uncle Lucky Keli'iholokai on uke. Mahalo gen and wishing you success!! Shoots! Johnny

It is such a beautiful but haunting song & I just do not do it justice I have it in temp of anywhere from 90 95 100 and 120. I have heard different people sing this but my first love is by Theresa Bright. If cannot that is ok also. Just placing 1 request. Love your teaching style.

    Wow! Great embellishments for the intro!! It'll take me a while to get that down - kind of like trying to pat my tummy and circle around my head at the same time :-P My brother lives near Hilo, and he took a Hawaiian language course for a while. He taught me the "Ua mau ke ea....", so I have that part down pat at least. :-)

    • @StevenEspaniola
      @StevenEspaniola  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aloha Taylor! I’d say the low G works better with this song and many Iz songs since thats what he preferred. All personal preference really but I play low G as well. Let me know if you have any other questions ;)

    Would you suggest any different pattern with a high G? Pick the strings in a different order?

    • @StevenEspaniola

      I would play it the same way, will just sound a little different. You can also try staring on the C string.

    Was curious how your ukulele is tuned. When I played it while watching. My top string tone doesn’t match.

    • @StevenEspaniola
      @StevenEspaniola  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Standard GCEA. My top G string is tuned with a “low G”. You can find sets of low G or can also just swap out the one string.
