The album isn't perfect but it's by far the most exciting thing I've heard in ages. Nice to feel that thrill when hearing a new band. Definitely looking forward to their future work.

Just saw these guys live in Madison, WI. They are really good... especially the drummer. I listened to their album on the way home from the concert and thought they were better live. They didn't talk but they were very in tune with each other and were able to bring their segments of chaos back to peace and back on a dime. The rhythm guitarist broke his high e string and still kept playing till the band gave him some time to restring. Took him like a minute and he was good. I was surprised to find out how young they are... pretty much fresh out of high school. I felt a mix of talking heads, King Crimson, dabble of american football, and a little bit of muse.
I’m so glad you reviewed this album so I was able to know it exists, this album is amazing and a 10/10 for a debut album. I’m definitely following them now!
BMBMBM is without a doubt the peak but I cant help but feel like Speedway is the standout track. I just keep coming back. I love how this band takes the best parts of Battles and Melvins and moves them forward with an intelligence found in Zorn's freestyle sessions

I'm sorry but this album is way more enjoyable, creatively, than Kids See Ghosts. At this moment, I'm spinning and hearing the LP for the 1st time, just starting the B-Side, and so far...it's fan f'ing-tastic!!! There is 'beauty in the dissonance'!
I got the chance to see them live at Immergut Festival and I can only recommend seeing them yourself. The music translates incredibly well to a live environment and I felt like I was in trance listening to some weird Krautrock band, even though one of the guitars didn't even work properly for nearly the whole set. Just an incredible project and I'm very much looking forward to what they're putting out next.
To me Black Midi is the equivalent to drinking a full bottle of Robitussin because a friend of yours told you that you'll trip. But instead of getting that noxious buzz that you'd normally get from downing a lot of cough syrup you actually have the best trip of your life.
I love this band's approach to an unapproachable sound. Speedway for example starts off sounding sort of peppy and sparkly with snare hits straight out of a half alive track, and then it just starts layering sounds on top of it as those weird uncanny vocals come in and doesnt stop until its straight up unsettling.
I saw a black midi vinyl of their previously released "Talking heads and Crows' perch" at Rough Trade (Brooklyn) yesterday. Highly anticipating the wax from this release.

This is so close to a 10 for me and might be as time goes. I really really love this album and have loved all their non-album singles as well. Def competing with Igor for AOTY. Probably a 9 for me so far.
Black midi almost looks like post-mathcore to me, the same spirit as early Dillinger Escape Plan and other adapters, but slowed down with more of a funkish, rockish vibe rather than coming from a metal starting point.
All song dissection aside, I really love black midi’s debut and I cannot wait to see how they choose to progress their sound. (Personally a 9)- just because I can’t really think of another band that’s delivered something like this. I guess Dry Cleaning have a slightly similar thing going on but on a more easy listening scale.
I found these guys by stumbling into a live set on youtube. I knew i had found gold immediately. Just kidding. I didn’t know it was gold until I watched this review 6mos later.

The first band that came to mind is US Maple. I haven't seen anyone else make that comparison. Underrated band!
