Calgary water main break: Mayor praises locals for record low consumption, offers Father's Day tips

- Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek delivered another update on Sunday morning, regarding water restrictions stemming the breakdown of a major water line 11 days ago.
Breaking a streak of mostly bad news, Gondek revealed that the city reached an all time low in its consumption of water on Saturday night, using just 438 million litres, as city officials continue working to fix five different breaks in the pipeline. She said the city currently has "enough water stored to meet demand and also protect ourselves in case of any emergencies."
Gondek also offered some Father's Day tips, suggesting dads opt to drink beer instead of water, or avoid washing the car, and brush their teeth in the shower, if they really need to.
The latest update comes after Gondek enacted a local state of emergency on Saturday. Though she made it clear that the state of emergency was "not linked to the level of water in the reservoirs," she said the difficult decision would allow City officials easier access to the feeder main sites that require repair.
This comes after an extended repair timeline revealed Friday. Rather than an estimated one-week timeline for a complete repair, it will take another 3-to-5 weeks due to further damage at five other locations of the pipeline
Additionally on Saturday, Calgary’s capital priorities and investments director Francois Bouchart said that “sufficient pipe material” has been secured to complete the remaining repairs for the critical water main break that has triggered a water supply crisis in the city.

10:30 am here in Calgary on Sunday. I have a huge yard and garden. Thanks to the wonderful rain, my green and blue bins are doing double duty to collect rain water. We are hand washing dishes and no rinsing. We wipe them dry to remove all water and soap. I am not rinsing my tins or plastic for recycling. Just scraping. Also, my dish water is going directly on to outside plants. I am collecting all water that would normally run down the drain, as I run it for correct temp for a shower. I'm doing my part. You're welcome Calgary!
Me too to all! 😊
I'm doing my part as well. ❤ I'm grateful for these updates.
As bad as this sounds. This is a blessing in disguise. I bought 4 barrels to collect rain water and I’m now watering my alberta wild roses. I think if you’re a proud Albertan. You will be more than happy to collect rain water like our farmers do. We need to rethink how we use water because Alberta is not like other provinces with a lot of lakes or by an ocean.
That’s a great point! Water resources are more limited in southern Alberta than anywhere else in the country. Rethinking water use today can be beneficial for the long term.
P.s. I love the wild rose! 🌺I’m a Calgary expat and even though my career took me out of Alberta, I planted Alberta wild rose in my yard so I’d have a peace of home with me.
What I’m doing to save water in Calgary? Avoiding the town all together. We will not attend stampede this year, to help reduce the strain. We will spend our money eating in southern towns like Wokotoks and Diamond Valley. We will avoid Calgary at all costs. From the overzealous speed trap cameras to the lack of utility infrastructure, Calgary is quickly descending into a dystopia of tyranny
So u don't even live here and u are throwing a tantrum! LMAO

Despite the majority of AB being against this DECISION!!????? hmmm
@@justicetrufaux6722Are you aware that Calgary municipally is against developing the coal industry throughout AB & the Foothills? The water required for the coal industry would be a huge drain on our water supply.......
Wow I feel sorry for Calgarians due to there mayor.
Pretty bad
She seems sane. 😂😂😂
Thanks Major Gondek!
It's amazing how resourceful we can all be and how much personal responsibility we can all engage in.
The two fav talking points for conservatives.... so they should all be content with this!!
Drink beer and exacerbate your dehydration! I loved these analogies… the mayor ate 1/3 of your ice cream and now you have to fight they/them/those for the remaining 2/3. 🤣 priceless!
Also, if things are so bad...shut down restaurants, coffeeshops..etc!?
You want to put people out of work? Or make them lose their business?
@anthonyhulse1248
No, but we are all in this together right?

This reminds me of the covid!
Why even talk like this ?
My thoughts exactly. She seems to be getting mad that people are expressing their frustration with the situation. I dont know who wrote her briefing today but they did her absolutely no favors.
Karen’s gots the powa now!
We have companies that repair and build pipelines all over the province ,are you getting their help ? What a joke !
Rainbow plaid work shirt engaged!
Thank you Calgary 🌝🇨🇦❤
Happy Father's Day!
Everyone who just moved here because it was cheap. Now you know why!.... although it's not as cheap as it used to be. It's hardly worth it now.
??Its more expensive to live in Calgary than any any other city in Canada.....when was it cheap....lol
@@ron8802 in 2022 and 2023 the AB government ran a nationwide campaign to encourage people to move to Alberta. They boasted that it was the cheepers to live in Alberta, even saying a person could sell their house in Vancouver and buy 4 in Calgary…. That statement didn’t age well.
We did better because it rained , I'm putting out some storage bins under the gutters, save for plants and toilet water, Rainwater is softwater too ,good for the hair.
The mayor/council need to start bringing in water trucks to water gardens, any overhead can come out of their salaries as it's beginning to look intentional. The city also needs to give everyone rebates on their water bills.
keep lying i will not comply
Why are all chats turned off on all sites pertaining to this issue? Today’s news release was about using popsicles instead of kiddie pools, June 22. I’m sure we can figure out how to stay cool. I am not sure why the direction has turned to a Calgary led committee to share why this happened with other cities while Calgarians don’t have answers to anything.. It didn’t happen in other cities, it happened here. We weren’t prepared for an emergency having only 3 pipes in stock. I feel like the city is trying to turn this lack of foresight into a different conversation.
Was it laundry day?
She is just the worst mayor.
Wrong.
She is stepping up as mayor to keep us informed & safe this summer. Practice some PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.
@@JEdwarrd she is the worst mayor ever. She is only doing her job, and she’s doing it badly. You need to practice some personal responsibility. I can tell you’re not saving water by your comment.

Sure let's close down the city and its businesses because of city councillors incompetence.
I been watering and using probably 200-300 gallons a day 😅 with out problem. Got a 3000 gallon water tank in my back yard and 2 500 gallon small tanks I use on a trailer I drive to stavly Alberta they got a pump house u can fill up tanks with for free. Then u drive back to Calgary and pump the water into the 3000 gallon tank takes about 1 hr to fill 1000 gallons at the pump house and about 3 hrs of driveing for there and back. Did 3 trips 1 day filled up the 3000 gallons and using it to water plants and grass a and anything that need water flushing toilets
Keep in mind this water is not drinkable so I still need to use water for drinking and washing dishes

Is that why Doug Ford wants beer in convenience stores but won't tackle rising food costs or addiction?
Many UCP voters love Doug's idea, and want the UCP to bring the idea here.
Is that professionalism? Or yet another double standard coming from a partisan throwing a tantrum!?
Power over spice is power over all.

Why is her hair done so well but tells us not to shave or shower?
@JesusIsGoodTruth her hair tells us to shave and shower but her shirt says relax bro
Cancel schools then, too.
I use wet swiffer pads to clean floors instead of mop and bucket and avoid meals that require a lot of water eg pasta and mashed potatoes.
I did the same thing just yesterday.
That will save Calgary and make them fix it faster!! Good for you gold ⭐️ such a good Canadian
Yeah no, my Swiffer is for quick clean ups. Have not washed my floors in 3 weeks now. With 3 dogs, they're getting washed today. Swiffer just smears the dirt around.

What the hell is she wearing. Can’t she be more professional? We all know she was installed & not voted in but this is ridiculous. Remove her now!
She is saving water by not doing laundry. Good grief.

People, you are on your own if there is a real problem. The fact this isn't fixed yet should be an alarm to everyone. Imagine if the power was out as well. Interesting China can build a hospital in one day but Canada can fix a water pipe 😂.

Also him not mentioning the huge problem with the 'Tofu Dregs' in China. Essentially very horrible building practices heavily influenced by vast corruption and no one being held accountable for that.

Not a problem we just have to reduce to Europe levels. The low cost of water made Canadians wasteful. If Alberta wants to double the population we will have to change our habits.

Spoken like a true Canadian liberal and don’t compare oranges to apples and no we don’t want more people and yes how government spends our tax dollars does have to do with funding wars .. you sound so smart … but what a facade
@@stephey808 No actually I'm a true conservative. Smith wants to double the population, more people more power in Ottawa. Liberal/NDP want more government and don't want personal responsibility.
The consequences of not reducing water consumption by the required 25% is also not as terrible as people are imagining as it just means that some districts may not have enough pressure some of the time (they would still be having their reservoirs supplied just not be enough to meet demands), to ensure the water is safe to drink hence there will be a boil water order as there was in Bowness and no no longer have. Potable water will be distributed to the affected communities so you can pick up drinkable water in your camping water containers if you still have any such containers but even if you don't, you can still just boil whatever water that does trickle through your taps some of the time (most likely during the morning as the reservoirs partially fill up overnight due to reduced usage).
Relax, the world isn't ending and plenty of people live with far less water supply... There's even cities in the US which normally would have less water supply than we are considering as the worst possible consequence of this break.
