Inside Creggan: the estate where Lyra McKee was murdered

  • Northern Ireland's troubled history of sectarianism, of violence, of cultures and traditions which refuse to reconcile, still can't be entirely consigned to the past. The murder of the journalist Lyra McKee earlier this year was a vivid reminder of how organisations like the New IRA can still operate in communities struggling with a profound sense of political alienation. We report from Creggan, the part of Londonderry where Lyra McKee was killed, to find out more.

    Brexit is poking a stick into a hornets nest in NI

      Agreed.
      Just having a Tory government at Westminster is bad enough without the lunacy of a form of BrExit that damages the economy or requires borders that breach the spirit of the GFA/BA 😱

      @@redghost6386 what are you waffling about WE HAVE NO INTEREST IN LEAVING THE EU. WE don't want to commit Economic suicide unlike you idiots.
      For some reason you seem to think the Irish would back the UK on anything, we WOULD NEVER EVER. After nearly a 1000 years of oppression and genocide we would never ever trust the English, which caused the divide and the anguish of my Nations History. The Brits took N.Ireland from us in 1922, and in the process treated the population of Nationalists like a disease. Which caused Sectarian violence and segregation. The Brits treated and still does the 6 counties like a colony. There has been no investment in N.Ireland except Belfast over the past 30 yrs. Nothing has changed.
      Ireland will be reunified because of Brexit and I welcome it gladly to see my country as one. Beause the UK will break international law by Breaking the GFA if the new PM leaves without a Deal.
      All it takes if a hard border is placed in N.Ireland is one bomb or people to die as a result of it to kick off again. If Britian wants to be alone then it can be, The North voted to Remain and the EU will gladly see that transition happen.
      So on your bike Mate...

    6:47 - The frustrations this man talks about are not limited to Ireland. I alot of places North of Birmingham in England people are getting pissed off. Wages are a joke even if you can get a job. A experienced nurse can work 37 hours a week and only take home £1500 a month. Even worse, if you are on minimum wage your life is not going to be a happy one. Poverty or massive debt are the only options for many working families! The young people are not stupid and they see whats happening. It's no surprise so many kids want to join gangs. It's their only way to get anywhere.

    I know it is complicated but I want to understand it better.

    • @sophietitz4206
      @sophietitz4206 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So the not very detailed explanation is, that the around about 100 years ago the whole Irish Island was English but the Irish people felt surpressed so they fought to become Irish. Around about 60 years ago Ireland became Ireland but NI stayed English, because over 50% of the people are english. As a result the Irish people continued to fight for a Irish NI and it ended in 1998 in a Peace treaty. But of course people wont forget why they Family members are dead and Irish and English people also go to seperate schools and they live in one City in segreated areas with high fences so the mistrust between the people never stopped and the Fight between the English and Irish people never stoped.
      I personelly believe that the Brexit is Not helping either. The posibility of a hard border between NI and Ireland helps that people wish a united Ireland.

      800 years ago Ireland was invaded by the Anglo Normans and bother we’re catholic so eventually they blended in. The reformation happens in England and Scotland in the 15/1600s. The English start to invade Ireland again. The North was the most rebellious part so they strip the Native Irish population of their land (except a minority who convert to Protestantism) and ‘plant’ the area with poor, persecuted or trouble making Scottish Presbyterians and English Anglicans. This creates a three way split which the English Crown uses to divide and conquer. The Penal Laws are set up to discriminate Catholics and Presbyterians. They rise up against the English and are put down in 1798. The Act Of Union is signed in 1801 making forming the UK of GB and Ireland. The Presbyterians out of fear and the repercussions along with bribery now consider themselves British instead of Irish. The Great Famine happens causing 1 Million deaths and several million more to emigrate over the following half century. American fundamentalists come to Ireland and spread fundamentalist, anti catholic evangelicalism. 1916 Easter Rising, failed attempt for Irish independence. Early 1920s after the independence war Ireland becomes a free state but Protestants in the North form the UVF to threaten war with Britain and Ireland if they don’t let the North remain in the UK. Ireland is portioned into Northern Ireland and what would become the Republic of Ireland in 1921. For 48 years Catholics/nationalists (those who want a United ireland) face systemic oppression and discrimination under Jim Crow style laws. The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association is formed. After police vs protestor violence the British army are called in to intervene. This was the beginning of the Troubles. The between 1968 and 1998 there were 30 years of almost civil war, violence from both republican and loyalist paramilitaries and the British Army and the police force. Atrocities were committed by all these groups. In 1998 the Good Friday Agreement was signed bringing a relative peace. Paramilitaries now turn to drug dealing and controlling communities via fear now there is no war or cause to be fighting. Brexit is throwing a spanner in the works as a hard boarder either on the island of Ireland or in the Irish Sea will cause tension and the potential of violence from republican or loyalist groups respectively.
      This is a big overview and misses out many nuances and big details such as 1641, Cromwell, 1690 and the orange order etc. Ireland is a very detailed and confusing place and it’s history can’t be easily explained in a few lines but hopefully this helps a bit.
