    _____________
    Adobe Lightroom Smart Previews allow photographers to edit preview images on-the-go by creating smaller DNG versions of offline photos. Once connected to the original RAW file, the edits made to the preview sync to the photo easily and automatically. Like magic!
    While not intended, previews are also a great (smaller) backup and will greatly increase the performance of Lightroom since it has less data to handle and work through when editing Smart Previews.

    Hi Chris
    Awesome video!! I have been using lightroom for the last year, and really like it.. but I dont really have a workflow.. It looks like you have a pretty awesome workflow! I hav no idea how to use catalogs and collections... can you in some way (maybe in a video) show how your worflow is? like how you have a catalog with smart previews on your laptop and then all the raws on a hard drive? maybe by showing what you do eveytime you get home from a shoot?
    And yep I have seen the video that is named My complete PHOTOGRAPHY WORKFLOW in 10 Steps but that more says what you do not how...
    Thanks again for all your incredible videos here on youtube!

    Exporting files takes a LOT longer once I have made this change. That may not seem like a big deal, but I shoot events with MANY galleries. Sometimes up to 100 per event. And they need to be exported separately into their own galleries of photos. This slows that process down significantly.

  • @FlorianLand

    This is absolutely GENIOUS, Chris!!! I've always been struggling with never having the option to go back to some old pictures on the go... Quick question: Are the smartpreviews automatically stored next to the catalogue they were created in or does Lightroom choose any other local space to store it?

    • @chriseyrewalker

      They are automatically (and have to be) stored next to the Catalog yes.

      Not too sure actually. I so rarely export to Photoshop.
      I’d say stick with the original RAW file to have the maximum resolution in PS to work with.
      The PSDs will definitely not synch from Smart Preview to RAW in Lightroom.

    Hi Chris
    , thank you for your very helpful videos and blog on workflow
    I would like to know if I am correct in thinking that the workflow is to place your culled RAW images into a folder structure, go into Lightroom and create Smart Previews. I have three questions
    1. I am assuming that it is possible to move the file structure from 1 Hard Dr to another, but one should not adjust the file structure as the Smart Previews would not be able to find their home files. Alternatively, the Smart Previews are really smart and I need not worry about this.
    2. Once I have created the Smart Previews I can use them to edit images in Lightroom and dropping across into Photoshop as necessary when the SSD with the Smart Previews on is next attached to the computer with the RAW images, all the edits will be transferred, as I don’t want to destroy the original raw image does this go back to a copy of the raw image?
    3. Additionally, if I am using other programs from within like the Nik Collection 3. These edits also survive and be transferred to the edited full-size image when the Smart Previews SSD docs with the hard drive with the RAW images on?
    Please could you clarify these points, many thanks

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard,
      Happy to hear that it was useful to you.
      As to your questions:
      1. As long as you change, move or copy things INSIDE Lightroom, the Smart Previews will stay connected to the RAW files. No need to re-connect anything.
      2. You can't edit Smart Previews in Photoshop, as this is a pixel-based editing process and you're manipulating pixels in Photoshop. So you need the original pixels to work with. The Smart Previews are, essentially, a compressed, smaller (2500px long) DNG version of your original RAW files. When editing RAW files in Photoshop and saving them afterwards, Photoshop creates a PSD file and saves it next to the original RAW file. You shouldn't lose any data this way.
      3. Can't say for sure as I don't use these plugins. But it would be an easy test: Import a RAW file into LR, Generate the Smart Preview, disconnect the RAW file (rename it or move it outside of Lightroom), try to edit the same file (now LR is using the Smart Preview as it will tell you this under the Histogram), try to open this file with a third party plugin and edit it, then reconnect the RAW file again so Lightroom detects it and see if the edit is transferred or if Lightroom.
      Hope this helped.
      Chris

    Great vid thanks for sharing! One thing I don't understand, is do smart previews work together with 1:1 previews? If I convert a folder to smart previews, should I then disgaurd the 1:1 previews? Or do you use them together with?

  • @alexmetcalfe4668
    @alexmetcalfe4668 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Chris, what do you thinking of exporting edited files as DNG from LR and leaving the library clean?
    I saw Chris Burkard recommends this approach.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alex,
      Yeah, I worked for Chris for a while. I know his system and he’s actually one of the guys who got me into Photo Mechanic.
      I don’t mind the DNG system, but I don’t see the advantage. I’d much rather have all the files in one central LT catalog where I can organise, sort and even have virtual copies.
      DNGs are basically a RAW file + a low res JPG alongside it packaged into one. But in Lightroom I can see the edit anyway (previews or smart previews represent them) and can browse the files in there. No need to convert or export first.
      But both systems work.

    I realize this is old mate, but im low on internal computer space and if I listened and watched correctly you can build smart previews, you said for you it is 73gb of extra space, and then when you disconnect your external drive you can still edit the smart previews but obviously you can export them as full size. Now my question basically is if you plug that external drive back in lightroom it automatically knows that and allows you to edit and export the full size raw photos rather than the smart preview?

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Correct. You can export up to 2500px on the long edge with smart previews. But as soon as you connect the RAW files Lightroom accesses those. You wouldn’t even know it has, except that it’s a bit slower at processing larger RAW files, compared to the light Smart Previews. Below the Histogram you can always see what files are there: Preview, Smart Preview, Original RAW file.

    You must be psychic! That was an item in your previous vid where I thought, "I really need to do that!"I have 80,000 raw images so am assuming it would be simple to create SPs considering your 100,000. Interesting you also keep you catalog on your hard drive. Mine (1.9Gb) is currently on OneDrive. I'm guessing moving it to my laptop could speed it up further? Thanks again for the tip.

      Hi John! I actually don't keep it on my internal drive. I could, but I don't. I have my catalog (+smart preview) on an external SSD and with of USB C (3.1) I have a very fast connection. You can discard smart previews and the re-generate them. But, if I’m not mistaken, smart previews only exist in one size. It’s the regular (non-editable) previews that allow for different resolutions / sizes.

  • @mubblemann

    Interesting video. I have a question.
    I use HDR merging in Lightroom CC before moving over to Photoshop CC to mask in other layers. Can I still use this functionality if I want to edit on my laptop using smart previews in Adobe CC rather than the full res raw files on my desktop? Or would it be easier to just import and edit the original raw files on to my laptop and then transfer the files and catalog over to my desktop once finished?

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’d stay with the RAW files when editing in PS. You’d want the maximum quality and resolution for merging to achieve the best result and PS is also always better with higher resolution files. Easier to work more precisely.
      You can always generate a smart preview off the final file once imported back into Lightroom though.

    • @mubblemann
      @mubblemann 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chriseyrewalker Yeah that's what I was thinking. I'll probably end up uploading the raw files to the Adobe Cloud to work remotely on my laptop or just transfer the full catalog between machines. Appreciate the response Chris.

    After you export the raw+smart preview files to your HDD do you then go back and delete them off your SSD Catalog?

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The RAW files are moved across.
      The Smart Preview files always stay with the catalog on the SSD. This is what allows me to disconnect the HDD with the RAW files but still access (a smaller version of) the RAW files in form of a Smart Preview.
      As soon as I connect the HDD again all changes to are automatically transferred from Smart Preview to RAW file. You don’t even notice this happening.
      Hope that makes it clearer.

    Good video if you keep your LR catalog on your system drive. But it's a whole new ballgame if you have your LR catalog on your external HD with your Photos! Which a lot of people do for ease of backing up. If you do keep your LR catalog on your external HD it gets quite complex and I'd recommend staying away from SP unless you learn the steps it will take to keep everything in sync.

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I DO keep the catalog on an external SSD and the RAW files on an external HDD. Synching with Smart Previews isn’t that complex actually.

    • @nashvillecsx
      @nashvillecsx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you well know the pitfalls if you screw things up here. Of course to get your catalog on your laptop you have to make a copy of it and move it to your laptop. You now have TWO COPIES of your catalog. One on the external HD and the other on your laptop. It is a dangerous game to have TWO COPIES of a catalog unless you know exactly what you're doing.
      If you don't mind, I'd like to know your workflow since you say it isn't complex. Of course that term is relative... the cockpit of a 747 isn't complex if you know what you're doing! :)

    • @chriseyrewalker

      No I only have the one catalog (+ backups of that catalog). But that one main catalog is located on the SSD and never copied across to the laptop or computer I’m using. Since I’m running it on an SSD I have a solid and fast connection.

      OK, I think I understand what your saying. But you do have to "lug" the external SSD drive with you where ever you go. Not any different than carrying your external drives that you keep your photos on really. SSD may be smaller but you still have to have it. Sort of defeats the purpose of Smart Previews and is definitely not what you are demonstrating in your video. Not only that but like I said in my first comment, if they house their LR catalog on their external HD (which a lot of people do) then it does become quite involved... Right?

  • @juliamueller8968
    @juliamueller8968 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Chris, great video! Thank you! I just started my first import using smart previews. I see you chose "minimal" for the type of smart preview. I've read that 1:1 previews are best then have them discard after 30 days. I'm a little confused about smart previews vs 1:1 previews... are they the same thing or just a different resolution. Do you indeed choose minimal when making smart previews or the other options...1:1, standard, or embeded/sidecare?

    • @chriseyrewalker

      Smart Previews are editable.
      ‘Normal’ previews are just viewable in the Library view. The larger, the more detailed, the more space they will take on your drive.

      Hi Gareth! Yes you can tell Lightroom to use Smart Previews when in develop mode. Just go to the System Preferences (or Catalog Settings, can't remember 100% right now) and select Performance at the top. Then you can check a box so Lightroom uses Smart Previews when editing.

    • @gjj9358
      @gjj9358 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. One other question. If i create smart previews (for a wedding say), detach my external HD or tell LR to work on the smart previews instead of the RAW files. When I come to export, will LR export from the RAW (assuming the external is attached, applying the develop settings etc?

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. If available LR will export from the RAW files (with the applied settings), if not it will export from the Smart Previews (Which is MUCH MUCH faster btw.) So if you don't need the photo to be over 2540px on the long edge I'd recommend leaving the RAW files detached for a super fast export)

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If will always use the RAW files when they are available.
      Easiest way to see if Lightroom is using them is to check below the Histogram of the image. If it says: ‚Smart Preview‘ or ‚Smart Preview + Original File‘.
      If you export full res from Smart Previews it won’t be larger than 2500px on the long end.

      SO.... just to be clear... if LR editing is faster with SmartPreviews, then I should disconnect my RAW files drive after import to force the quicker editing on the Smart Previews and then I should re-connect the drive with the RAWs afterwards for hi Rez exporting. Is that right?

    There is one thing I can't figure out, or find anywhere on the internet. Right now I have all Lightroom files and folders in the "pictures" folder on my MacBook Pro. But I want the original RAW files to be on an external drive in the future. How do I do that? When moving the files (in Finder), there is no way to tell Lightroom were the originals are. Not even an alias folder can help. How is this done, so that I can erase my main files on the MBP?

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      - Attach an external drive.
      - Add one photo to that drive.
      - Import that photo (Drag and drop) to Lightroom. Make sure it says: Add in the import dialog.
      - Lightroom will now show the new drive in the Library Module.
      - inside Lightroom: Drag the folders from your ‘Macintosh HD’ to that external drive.
      - files will now be moved from the MacBook to the external drive.
      - delete the ‘dummy’ image you imported at first. It was just there for Lightroom to recognise the external drive and add it to the Catalog as a destination.

    Hi Chis! Thanks for the info man! Got a question: I just generated smart previews for all my collections for my raw files (which are on my external drive). Now does LR automatically use those smart previews for editing or do I have to tell LR in some way that I want it to use them instead of the raws to speed up my editing?

      If your RAW files are attached to your computer then Lightroom will usually work with them and ignore the Smart Previews.
      BUT you can tell Lightroom to work with the smart Previews (until you zoom in, then it loads the RAW) in the Catalog Settings (or Preferences... not 100% sure right now). It’s a box you tick.

    Nice explanation. However I'm still not 100% clear on how Smart Previews would benefit my workflow. I store all of my LR photos and catalogs on external drives. Nothing is stored on my local computer. Would there be any benefit to using Smart Previews in this scenario?

    • @chriseyrewalker
      @chriseyrewalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you keep your catalog on an external drive, then the speed of your Lightroom is most likely bottlenecked by the USB connection. So, by using smart previews, you'll actually have less data flowing between your computer and the catalog. This means Lightroom will perform faster. So, yes, it's probably worth it.
      Even better is when you disconnect your original files from the catalog and let Lightroom work with ONLY the smart preview files. Then it won't be trying to juggle both the full RAW files and Smart Previews.

  • @thetruth6444

    • @chriseyrewalker

      The smart previews are generated next to the catalog file. So, if your catalog is on the SSD, then all you need to do is plug in that SSD into your computer at home and it will read the smart previews.
