Genesis 8-9 | The Rainbow | Bible Study

- This Bible study devotional covers Genesis chapters 8-9. The flood waters have subsided and Noah and his ark come safely to dry ground. It is here that God renews his covenant with humanity and seals it with the sign of the rainbow.
As always, we are committed to showing you how Jesus fulfills these specific passages. In Genesis 8-9, we see how Jesus fulfills the covenant God made with Noah and embodies what the sign of the rainbow was meant to communicate.

**An important note on Ham vs. Canaan being cursed: Noah's curse fell on Canaan, not Ham. We obviously don't condone or propagate any evil done against a people group because of a misreading of the Bible. It should be noted that many evil things have been done because people have misused Biblical texts. However, that should not keep us from using those texts, but seeking, rather, to understand them aright.
In this narrative, there is a tight link between Ham and his son Canaan. Twice in a short span, leading up to this curse, we hear that Ham is the father of Canaan. In the Hebrew mind, the father and son link is extremely close, almost a unity. Therefore, not only was Canaan cursed after Ham's actions, Ham was cursed because his son was cursed. The link is plain.
The important theological concern of this text is to continue to distinguish between the blessed and cursed line started back in Genesis 3. God is saying that sin has continued to rule in Ham's life, therefore the curse is within his line - particularly following his youngest son Canaan.
We apologize for using shorthand - "Ham" - to refer to the recipient of the curse - "Canaan" - but we do believe the point of the devotional still carries the message of Genesis accurately. Please read the below quote from commentator Kenneth Matthews for a more thorough explanation of our view.
"A better explanation is afforded by noting the purpose of 9:20-27 in its theological context. Its perspective concerns the life of later Israel as it anticipates entry into the land of Canaan. As the patriarchs’ actions may foreshadow the national life of Israel, for example Abraham's descent into Egypt (12:10-20), the lives of the antediluvian fathers modeled in a sense the future nations derived from Noah's sons. Shem, the father of Abraham, is the paradigm of later Israel; and Ham of their archenemies, Egypt and Canaan (10:6). Lying behind this is the ancient concept of corporate personality. Because of this unity of father-son, the character of the father is anticipated in the deeds of the sons. Hebrew theology recognized that due to parental influence future generations usually committed the same acts as their fathers whether for ill or good. 171 In this case the curse is directed at Ham's son as Ham's just deserts for the disrespect he had toward his own father, Noah. Yet the imprecation was 421 spoken against future generations of Canaanites who would suffer subjugation “not because of the sins of Ham, but because they themselves acted like Ham, because of their own transgressions.” 172 Those deplorable acts by the Egyptians and Canaanites are sexual aberrations that merited their dispossession by Israel and thus were forbidden by Moses as obscene offenses against the Lord (Lev 18:3-30)."

Why isn't this addressed in the video? That seems like the most obvious way to express the intentions of the video, clearly.
Noted related to Canaan being cursed. Praying that you redo the video for this episode, because most people will not come down into the comments to realize your error.

What an incredible blessing! Each week we study the parashat from a Messianic perspective, playing the game "Where's Jesus?" (like Where's Waldo?) in each section. As a Jew, finding Yeshua in every portion of Scripture is beautiful. To me this is the only way to approach The Word, for The Word IS Yeshua, every bit of it. We take it whole, like the Passover lamb, not discarding one part or breaking it in half from old to new; Hebrew to New Testament. It is ALL The Word and thus all Jesus every part. Preincarnate or Post or Immanuel; it's all Him.
Wow, thanks so much for sharing, Nikki! Super encouraging to hear. Amen!
Nice

@@hugebig2711 Thank you for your honest question. One of the ways I would answer you is to keep doing what you're doing. Seek out helpful and reliable resources to explain scripture to you. We are honored to be one of those sources. Getting a good study Bible is a great way to start. Here is one I recommend: www.amazon.com/NIV-Zondervan-Study-Bible-Hardcover/dp/0310438330/
Also, if you haven't already check out our friend's TH-cam Channel called: BibleProject.
Second, and more importantly, I would encourage you to pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand God's Word and to see the glory of Jesus within it. You can pray the short prayer from Psalm 119:18.
I hope this helps!
🌚🌝Awesome Presentation Brother. I will be honest, I was quite disturbed to see Noah's extreme reaction for seemingly innocent act of his sons. 🙄 Very surprising to know about incest being present so early in the Bible. Bible has something for every sinner out there - the molester, the incestor, the rapists, the adulterous, the murderer etc.. everyone is invited to see themselves in the Bible - one of the joys of reading the Bible.
if anyone from my grade is reading this...........hi
some thoughts - Have you ever wondered why Jesus does not appear to be in Chapter 4 of the Book of Revelation? Let's look at Heb 1:3 "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being". Now, the emerald is the stone of the tribe of Judah in the breastpiece of the high priest. You will find this to be true in the KJV, not in the NIV or the NASB. However, the Jewish historical societies all agree that the emerald is the stone of the tribe of Judah. Notice that the rainbow encircles the throne. No one comes to the Father except throught the Son. Note that the rainbow is not mentioned in Chapter 5. However when the elder refers to the Lion of the tribe of Judah do you think he was looking at the rainbow? When John then looks he sees a Lamb looking as if it had been slain. Remember God the Father is represented in Chapter 4 as one sitting on the throne. The Holy Spirit is represented as seven lamps before the throne. Do you think that Jesus is represented by the rainbow encircling the throne?
The first thing I thought of when the rainbow was mentioned is the book of Revelation. Thank you for bringing up how the emerald represents the tribe of Judah.
And WHY was Shem blessed?
Because he KNEW the Lord
_(this is why)_
And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard. Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent.
And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.
^ The ACCUSER... no love... The god of Canaan is the serpent... no compassion... the serpent is also a gossiper
unlike Shems God... who is The Lord
But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.
^ THIS IS AN IMAGE OF JESUS... and this is why Noah says "Blessed be the Lord - the God of Shem"
I will rejoice greatly in the Lord,
My soul will exult in my God;
For He has clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness
The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”
AND THIS CAN GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO GENESIS
"Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them."
Remember Jesus was not of Joseph's seed therefore the genealogy is totally irrelevant. The holy spirit came upon Mary not Joseph. Joseph was not the father of Jesus. Get it?
Good point. But both parents Joseph (Guardian and Legal Father) Mary Mother (Mother and Blood relative) trace to David and back to the founding fathers of Israel.
Check out Mary’s Genealogy in Luke 3:23-38
At the best a fairytale at the worst a terrible act of deception.
