      @@milkjug4237 a lot of people mistake the warcraft thing and think Starcraft was supposed to be a 40k game at some point, which wasn’t really ever true
      Aesthetically it pulls from a lot of sci-fi from the era so it has some elements of 40k but leans a lot heavier into alien and starship troopers style sci-fi than anything else.
      There’s a very weird non-written agreement between Games Workshop and Starcraft to not use certain starcraft 1 designs for zerg creatures (like cerebrates and the starcraft 1 version of hydralisks specifically) going forward that people say is because zerg look like tyranids, but the reverse is actually true- tyranids of the era starcraft 1 was released in all looked like weird bipedal bug men, and kind of assimilated the appearance of zerg after starcraft came out (though this is just because the sci-fi aesthetic of that era was all about that vibe and they were both pulling from the same inspirations, not that 40k was directly ripping starcraft and only starcraft or anything). This isn't true, though, it's a misconception that comes from people not understanding something Mike Morhaime said. They never actually had the Warhammer license, and as far as I can tell they never even contacted GW about the possibility.

Then they banned my Inquisitor Miniatures for using too many non GW parts and so I used only my original design figures... And they asked me not to take up space. Good video. Glad I found it. If you ever decided to do a follow-up or revision, take a look into the history of GWs retail outlets, webstore and FLGS relations. GW managed to push a lot of FLGS' in the UK out of business in the 80s and 90s. In the early 2000s they tried and failed to do the same thing in the USA. During this period, they did things like combine customer service and mail-order shop and forbid trade accounts from selling GW products using an online shopping cart (making the new GW webstore the easiest, though often most expensive, way to buy GW products online). While you touched on it briefly, one of the great GW marketing strategies has been to isolate their customers from the larger miniatures wargaming hobby. Various tactics including GW retail stores only selling GW products, branded everything (from brushes to rulers to glue) and strict policies forbidding the use of 3rd party miniatures in their stores and official events.

The outrage this time is somewhat amplified by the fact it's affecting the parts of the community with the loudest online voices, but it's also not directly affecting the tabletop, which remains GW's bread and butter. I have a love of warhammer from when my dad introduced me to the game in my childhood and it makes me sad to report that Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40k in their current forms have turned me off from table top war gaming almost entirely. At least in my experience tactics and infantry mean almost nothing as monsters can blend through a maximum sized unit worth three times the number of points in one turn and heroes are one man armies, whoever has the most expensive monsters and heroes usually wins and whoever found the least corners to cut on infantry gets shafted.

    • @variableaxis9652
      @variableaxis9652 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right now the only super strong infantry in 40K are skitarii vanguards just because of the new stratagems anything else feels kind of weak.

      @luketfer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest switching to Kings of War. It's basically old school Warhammer with big regiments and the like, it's miniatures agnostic so...those GW models aren't going to waste...

    • @cornmaized
      @cornmaized 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Funny you say that because the current meta is infantry spam.

    • @variableaxis9652
      @variableaxis9652 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      part of that is that is the fact that I mostly play craftworlds and my friends run very tank heavy lists so I do have a rather narrow view of the game. Most of the reason they feel weak to me is probably because of the insane anti infantry my friends field. Punisher Gatling cannons are not something to scoff at.

    I was first exposed to GW in '87 when I got Rogue Trader for Xmas. Never played it, but loved the art and the style. I steered *waaay* wide of 2e as it seemed to have a built in Argument Phase...
    But, then, I got stuck in MD. Being about 60minutes away from the US HQ of GW I struggled to find a D&D Game. So, I bit the bullet and jumped into 40K.
    I went deep. I played a lot. I devoured lore. I loved it. I got good at the game. (my painting was barely tabletop-quality, much less Golden Demon, so...) By the end, @2006 I moved overseas (from AZ to Germany) and let 40K start slipping.
    After several years I tried to dip my toes back in, and all I got was a "I fucking hate Flyers" attitude. The game definitely chose it's new meta (buy me!) and I was not willing to follow it.
    I am grateful that I got to play a mad lot of 40K during it's Golden Era (3e to 5e), so there's that. And about 25,000 points in models in GW pistol cases in my basement...
    Thanks for the video :)

    Loved this! Well done! I remember playtesting Mega Hulk (Space Hulk with multiple sets) in Derby (just down the road from the main office in Nottingham) back in 1988(ish). Stepped off the 'wagon' shortly after and stopped paying attention, due, by and large, to everything you mentioned. Still have a friend that writes awesome 40k novels for the company though.

    As a child, I played Warhammer 6th, but the problem was that in a town like me you do not have anyone else to play except your brother. At the end, we painted, we collected and we mostly played Paperhammer (where you use all your miniatures and then complete the army using paper squares with the name of the unit, TOTALLY "unacceptable" according to GW).

    • @chrismorel8613
      @chrismorel8613 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahha! A fellow paperhammer fan. I'm at the point now where models are 1 off purchases to sit and ain't as a relaxing separate hobby and gaming is done wi rule book,codex, notepad and either empty bases or proxy models. Last big game my group organised we used adaptus titanicus rules and my transformers collection to re fight the battle of Autobot city from the 80s cartoon movie.
      It's was a)utter carnage b)a massive laugh and c) put exactly 0 quid into GW's pockets

    GW never made or published a video game.
    They had a booth at a corporate-fair where they advertised their IP to sell licenses. Other companies then purchased a license or engaged in ‘partnership’ and made stuff.
    Loads and loads of that stuff was really bad, GW is just lucky some of them were actually good and popular. They really had nothing much to do with it, other than the Warhammer IP. Even Total War Warhammer was made on Sega’s initiative.

    For what it's worth, I heard about 40k in 2020 looking for a new hobby to pass the time in isolation. A couple of friends and I played a couple games on roll20 to learn the rules. But when I went to find current material for armies and the cost of minis to play with, everything was either ridiculously expensive or just didn't exist. I really like the Custodes and I put a 1200 point army together on a Google doc because as far as I could tell that was the standard army size (standardised play is another issue that 40k has in that no one seems to agree on what a normal game should look like) and it was just shy of £2k.
    So after an honest good couple months trying to pick up the hobby, I can say that 40k is just not welcoming to new players or people without expendable income. The closest I've come to a 40k game is the Play on Tabletop channel.

      @davieturner339 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      2k, how? Assuming you purchase through 3rd parties in the UK for the usual 15 to 25% discount you can get a 2000 point Custodes army around £200. Paints, glue etc adds a bit. But unless you are going full scale Forgeworld I can't work out your numbers.
      I get GW armies are hell expensive, but I actually think they are cheaper now than anytime since red and blue stickers were a thing in the 1990s.
      Age of Sigmar massively reduced the cost of fantasy armies.
      For anyone outside the UK I get pricing is a massive problem.

    Ironically, 2020 was when I actually got into 40k, despite not being able to play it at hobby stores. Which is why it was all the more shocking when 2021 rolled around and GW struck down youtube animators; the ones who helped me get into the series. It's 2022 now, I'm still playing the series but I haven't gotten over my ire for GW. To me, they're not the "owners" of 40k, they're just the only fans who can legally make money off of it. So yeah, to everyone who wants to play; try 3d printing and third party buyers! There's absolutely no reason to pay 35 dollars for a single space marine captain that you cut out of its spriggs, glue together, and then paint yourself.
