  • In this (poorly edited) video i remove the gearbox and diff from a 2011 Renault Kangoo to replace the clutch. Top tips are: remove the sub-frame, leave the starter wired in, use a brace across the top of engine to hold it up and have lots of jacks. Ideally get someone to help. Bleeding the clutch is easy when you know how - i wasted two hours! To bleed just push the pipe in to the first click and then run a clear hose of the bleed nipple and pump. Once no air push pipe fully in and clip. Should take 10mins - not the two hours I wasted :) - see here for instructions • CLUTCH TECH: Renault S...
PS - i def. not a mechanic - just saving money!

I am glad you posted this. I have a friend with one of these and a dead clutch. The local garage quoted a silly (high) price, and as there are a few other issues with the vehicle, she has decided to out it. I had a silly idea that as I have changed clutches on Morris Minors, Ford Cortinas and more motorbikes that I care to mention, it could be a 'quick' and 'cheap' way to get a small van. Having watched this, I think I will pass!

I think we may be a similair age :D I did a Marina once years ago and the only struggle was the weight and one bolt on top of bell housing. These days everything is so tight. Just did a Suzuki Alto - not as bad but bad enough. The Renault would have been ok if I had started by dropping that sub-frame - but what a faff.

Great video can you tell me how to remove the hydraulic connector to the gear box, this is on a Mercedes CITAN but the engine and gear box are the same as the Renault Kangoo?

That's a bit of a nightmare as it is plastic! Take off the two wire clips - i take them right off as they seem to slip back otherwise - and then really carefully pull the hose out without breaking the plastic slave cylinder. If you can get in there use something to hold the plastic so it doesn't bend. I find it is quite tight, To bleed when you put back replace the clip closest to the pipe and push pipe partly in and take rubber off of bleed nipple - then bleed in normal way before pushing pipe in all the way and replacing clip - the link in my description helps.

4 to 10 hours depending on how much access you need to the clutch and when you last did the job. There are some shortcuts e.g. not removing the RH driveshaft (mentioned), not disconnecting the trackrod ends (I don't know about this exact model but I've never needed to disconnect them on any Renault), etc, and once you know exactly where every bolt is you can work fast without being able to see. If the gearbox doesn't need to come right out you can sometimes leave the LH driveshaft connected to the gearbox (but not the hub) and hence don't need to drain and re-fill the oil. Things like that, again depending on the exact model.
