    One cool aspect about when Aang fuses with the ocean spirit, he only pushes with his waterbending, as the moon who pulls is gone. Just the attention to any small detail in their world building is really what takes this show from a 9/10 to a masterpiece.

      Exactly. I love every time Iroh steps up and faces down his own side when he realizes they are in the wrong. Team Avatar are technically the enemy but Iroh will absolutely stand with them at the drop of a hat against the more corrupt and evil Fire Nation members. ANGELA, STOP READING THIS! SPOILERS BELOW!

      It's one of my favorite parts in Legend of Korra, seeing Iroh has basically become the only non-Avatar to have access to the Spirit World and is living his best afterlife there when Korra visits.

    19:14 I always assumed Yue's father overheard Sokka defend her and decided he was the best chance of protecting her. He might have been in denial about his vision of her leaving the mortal world, hoping he could prevent it. I imagine that's why he's not mad at Sokka for failing to protect her at the end. He knew it was her destiny.

    It's such a beautiful detail: Aang's avatar state is triggered by the death of the moon spirit, and he walks into the spirit oasis and is empowered by the ocean spirit. You can see, the form they take resembles a koi fish! And then, when the moon spirit is restored, you can see them turn and look at the moon, then fizzle away. Not when the fight was over, but when the balance was restored. I wonder, was the ocean spirit trying to enact revenge? It wasn't mindless destruction, it only targetted the fire nation, but is something so violent it's normal nature? Kept in check by the harmony of the ocean and moon's duality? So deep. This show man. Unreal.

      I don't think that was the case that time. The trigger for the Avatar State being last ditch and nigh uncontrollable, I mean. It seems like this might've been an intentional connection. The spirit definitely helped Aang trigger the state, but his actions seemed more deliberate than the other times we've seen the Avatar State. Like the move was to connect with the other spirit to temporarily become that balance in order to fight back.
      If that makes sense.

    It's always kind of chilling when Aaang and the Ocean Spirit fuse. Like, you just feel that the Ocean Spirit is in a stage of primal rage when their partner/counterpart is killed senselessly and mercylessly by that moster. When Aang offers himself as a vehicle for their revenge they become unstoppable.

    Zuko's sister was first shown in episode 12 next to Uncle Iroh while they were watching Zuko's duel with his father. She was on one side of Iroh while Zhao was on the other. Its at 26:50 of your episode 12 reaction if you wanna see her reaction to the duel lol but its better to do so after watching the first couple episodes of season 2 imo.

    I think Yue's character demonstrates the show's excellent storytelling. She was introduced as a side character who we only recently got introduced to. To think, we've known her for only three episodes and her death still hits hard! It's in part how young she was, and a lot to do with how she knowingly and willingly chose to sacrifice herself, without hesitation, and the reaction of the people affected by her death, combined with the poetry of how the moon would be a constant reminder to them about their loss.

    So the giant Koi Godzilla wasn't just the power of the Avatar State, but also the power of the Ocean spirit. That's why even after Aang powered down there was some of the bright blue water that was able to take Zhao; that part was purely the Ocean spirit angry at what Zhao did.
    Also Iroh telling Zuko to rest is the exact same line he told Zuko in episode 1, but Zuko ignored him back then. The fact he listens now shows his character development.

    Iroh was always well liked, but in more recent years he seems to have moved up to nearly the fan favorite for many people. I think that's because, as adults, we have a much deeper appreciation for him and his wisdom. He remains one of my favorite characters in any media. I have always been a fan of the "older mentor who is pretty silly but is secretly one of the most powerful characters in the show" trope because it makes their jovial nature that much more impactful and vice versa.

  • @MattSamma
    @MattSamma ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The "since I lost my son, I think of you as one of my own" part is shattering.
    It's amazing how a show can deliver such a solid first season, and the following ones are EVEN BETTER.
    I think you already knew this but the voice of Fire Lord Ozai is Mark Hamill. When he read the script for the show, he said it was most likely going to be cancelled at episode 4 because he felt it was "too smart" for kids, but that he was glad it had continued because it's a show that plays up to the kids and doesn't underestimate them.
    I like what you say about all these kids being affected by trauma. It's something to remember throughout the series. All of the child/teen characters that appear are characters born in the war. The war has shaped their behaviors, and this can be seen a lot in the Fire Nation characters. Of course, Iroh, Ozai, Paku, all of them were also born during the war, but they are now adults. And Zhao is a character with a bit of a megalomaniac complex and the world is better off without him.
    Regarding what you say about "why the waterbenders didn't cause an avalanche or something"; having watched the series several times, I think the bending of an element is not the same for everyone, and depends a lot on the inner power and training each person has. That's why sometimes fire beats water, or even a single earthbender could defeat 5 others at a time (write this down somewhere :P).
    By the way, get ready, you're going to love to hate Azula; she's by far one of the most capable antagonists I've ever seen in a series, and dangerous as f***.
    And in closing, I know this must be the most repeated comment in the reactions to this episode, but: "everybody is a gangsta, until Uncle Iroh raises his voice".

  • @ponny2948
    @ponny2948 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    Zuko’s sister’s name is Azula, she’s a great character can’t wait to see your thoughts on her haha.
    Just so you know, you were saying Katara should heal the moon spirit, she couldn’t because no moon means no waterbending (her healing is a part of waterbending) and the fish was already dead (she can’t revive people from the dead).
    As far as Zhao being dead or alive that was a big debate when this show was first airing. Mild spoilers: you won’t get a definite answer unless you watch the sequel series The Legend of Korra.
    Personally I always loved season 1, it has some of my favorite episodes! But season 2 and 3 definitely just get better and better, there’s so much good stuff coming up!

    The northern watertribe was so out of touch with the rest of the world that it became a huge disadvantage for them which sucks when you remember its whats kept them safe for 100 years. Imagine how much better prepared they couldve been (even without any modern world knowledge) if they trained the boys and girls in both combat, bending and healing instead of segregating them

    • @SnowyWolborg

      Militarily speaking, separating the genders between Warriors and healers is stupid. Like, take out the sexism angle and it would still be stupid from a tactical standpoint. Having waterbenders who are capable in both combat and healing only makes their military stronger. If an enemy was to find out that only the women are capable of giving emergency first aid, all they would need to do is attack the females.

    Capped by these terrific finale episodes (right up there with The Storm & The Blue Spirit), Book One is wonderful and provides great world-building that the following two seasons are built upon. Still, I'm confident you will find that the show definitely elevates itself in Books 2 & 3 as the story telling becomes more serial in nature. Looking forward to experiencing the ride with you.

    I just binged these Avatar reactions. Love your reactions.
    What I really like about this series is that it was planned from the beginning as 3 seasons. Of course, I doubt EVERY single episode was written from the get-go. As the finale draws closer, the episodes obviously get more intense. So most fans say that season 1 has the most "filler," but one could argue that it's character growth/world building.
    Also, I think you should rewatch the live action movie once you complete this series 😂

    I've always wondered who in the Avatar writer's room came up with the idea of Koh The Face Stealer, and what were they smoking. No other creature in any other fictional work gives me the same sense of dread as Koh. The voice actor hit the right amount of menace.

    Read if you want to find out what happened to Zhao (I dont think it qualifies as a spoiler, at most it would be a very minor one):
    Zhao is, for this series, effectively dead - he does not come up anymore. However, in the series The Legend of Korra, which takes place after this series, we find out that Zhao was pulled into the spirit world and is stuck there for all eternity.

    I didn't remember that they briefly showed Zuko's sister in the finale of this season. And I had forgotten that they don't really reveal that he has a sister through this first season. You will HAAATE her. Also, my favorite line of dialog in the entire show relates to her.
    And you will be heartbroken next season when [THING HAPPENS].
    But I am certain you will find [CHARACTER] to be amazing and funny.

    Please everyone, even an "I can't wait for episode..." is a SPOILER. You create anticipation and expectations - Our gal gets it! She sees it! Let it happen organically, let her see it without being pushed in any direction. After that is when to dig deep. My thoughts

  • @johnbarleycorn_
    @johnbarleycorn_ ปีที่แล้ว

    At the end of season one, it's easier to appreciate one of the reasons why the live action movie flopped the way it did. The need for a big climatic ending meant that they tried to compress the whole of season one, around eight hours of television, into around an hour and forty minute movie. It's not that the movie is an unwatchable dud (certainly not when you compare it to how they butchered "Edge of Darkness" when Hollywood movie-ised it), but there is so much detail, character development and charm that was lost and this is with a season where there are probably several episodes you could largely skip over as not adding really contributing much to the overall arc. How they would have dealt with the later seasons if they'd been allowed to do the sequels doesn't bear thinking about.

    The world is set. Season 2 and 3 are set up to be on another level.
    Azula is the sister. I won't spoil anything. I promise you that you will grow to love to hate her. I'll say nothing else.
    The ocean spirit was using Aang's Avatar body as it's Avatar. It was being very selective in what it destroyed. It's pretty obvious an entity like that could kill any number of people with ease.
    Zuko's at the end of the series is in turmoil. He's even more lost than ever. He's like an animal acting on instinct.

      I think he definitely noticed how much compassion Sokka had for his daughter, which is why he put him on her protection detail. That Sokka has personal experience with the Fire Nation military and understand their modern-day tactics was gravy on the mashed potatoes.
