You are so right about that, Brian. Grades aren't everything and grades don't define who we are. It's the learning that defines who we are. Letter grading is what causes us to stress and cheat in the first place.
You are speaking facts. It's absolutely relatable. Really great informative video. I actually failed calculus on 1st take and it sucks to fail for the first time. I've never failed a subject before in my entire life. I would say failure is part of life. It's not the end of the world. You can still have improvement if you devote and commit your time on the topics you were wrong at and how to correct it. Or in basic saying is "Learn from your mistakes". I believe I can pass Calculus this 1st retake. I'm not gunna give up. There is still hope. And this video really helped me to become motivated of passing and getting good grades. Thank you, Brian.
I tell my students, "this is what you were able to do THIS time; it's up to you whether you'll be able to do more in the future. That's what matters most and you don't have to get there next week or maybe even next year, if bad things are happening in your life. But the point is to be working and/or growing towards a point when you WILL do more. Grades are pointers to point us in the next direction, that's all."
I have a problem where I get hyperfocused on grades and will spend way to much time than I need to studying for a test or perfecting a project. Idk why I'm not even in college yet. My biggest regret is how I spend more time studying than with my family or hobbies and when I do get time off I don't seem to enjoy anything.
First year of high school is easy but important so get your assignments done on time and set them first I am ending my freshman year right now and I regret not getting assignments done and settling for less. Get the best grade you can get it will pay off and the end of the year!! You will have plenty of social life time if you focus on getting assignments done.

Don't grades measure learning? Of course there is some deviation like testing schedules that force cramming, and extra credit for ridiculous reasons.

I’m going into highschool so my main focus is grades and also learning, but I’m also focusing on social life as well.
