John saw you @ Godfrey Daniels I lived in the valley you are absolutely the most awesome folk singer up there with woody, you have a heart of depth and substanence and a way with word and guitar. How anyone could confuse racism out of this song truly does not get you at all. No worries you have fans who truly afore what you have contributed to this world. At the music festival many years ago in Bethlehem my daughter ran up to you yelling " your the the great John Gorka" you blushed and ever so sweetly gave her a hug. She was 8 yo and she understood your music especially the ones about the valley my sister lives next to the wagners
John !!! Your voice sounds great! Sweet and clear! Like your faster tempo songs! But all are a source of healing and calm. Thank you for sharing your gifts!
This song is most likely about him and his generation and how is father worked hard to send him to college, as that was the way of the baby boomers generation etc. not any political racial whatever unbelievable. I love you John I love your music and when the family the girls and I play it on the holidays especially reminding us of home and better days. Thank you for your poetry it reaches so many of us. I know no other man to be as humble as you are wishing you nothing but great success always christine
This song hits me square on. My parents didn't go to college but they provided a good childhood for me and made sure I want to college on their dime. It didn't occur to me how blessed I was until a couple decades later. Being a white man with a solid family and a college education is be privileged.
How is IT EVEN POSSIBLE this guy is not at least I mean as well known as like, James Taylor or that Edmund Fitzgerald dude? I DON'T GET IT. He's so fucking great!
James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot broke through during the hey day of the singer-songwriter, folk rock explosion of the 60s and 70s. John Gorka arrived on the scene about 10 years later when the culture had largely moved on, relegating folk once again to a niche genre. By the time Gorka began putting out his brilliant songs, many more people were into rap, techno-rock, urban pop, and neo-soul music. As an old timer of 67, folk and country rock will always be “my music”, and I put Gorka right up there with the best of the genre: Taylor, Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, etc. His best songs rival Dylan’s, imo, and even surpass Dylan sometimes in their honest, emotional resonance.
Yeah I remember how Clinton just had to not fuck it up n the rust belt and told a bunch of poor white people to be mindful of their privilege lmao. Enjoy trump. You deserve it.
My hat is off to John Gorka with "Ignorance and Privilege". Sir, you grok #WhitePrivilege and I commend you. That tune is now alive in my mind. THANK YOU.
Did you ever get harassed because of the color of your skin, systematically oppressed by new jim crow laws, racially profiled by the police. It doesn't mean you had an easy life where everything was handed to you, it means it could have been worse because of something about yourself you can't chamge and has no bearing on your character.
does anyone know how I can find my two theme songs "Always going home" and "Up until then" I think it is on the album Out of the valley but cant find it anywhere on Amazon Thanks in advance
I found Japan a very racist country--saw signs everywhere in clubs, bars, some regular stores that said "Japanese Only" or" Hakujin OK Cocojin not allowed" (whites are ok blacks are not---I never went in those stores etc. If my brothers in arms (USMC) were not allowed then I was not going to give them my Yen
David Brewer also, persons of mixed blood (what they call "Han" or half) which means the same thing in America (Half Blood)--Japan is the most homogenous country in the world and many especially the older Japanese still feel that fact is one of the defining aspects of their country. And to answer your other question. Yes, I have been to France, the UK , Germany,, all through the Med. and certain South American countries and several South Asian countries as well as Beirut (1983), Israel, Saudi Arabia. With the middle east I suppose you are meaning the Muslim countries: Their hostility comes not by race but fanatical religious fervor. It is not the fact that a person is of another race but another religion that draws their ire. And sonny boy I have probably spent more time abroad (mainly Japan, the countries in the Med. and the middle east) than you have spent in school. Do not confuse religious extremism with racism--same result but different reasons. In the U S most hate comes as a result of race (of course you also have religious hatred) and I consider more racist than Japan. Now before anyone calls me an American Hater, I am a white (with some Cherokee American (through and through), socially moderate, a patriot and a veteran who was proud to have served, but I am all too familiar with the hate in both America and other countries. So unless you have been in more than a few foreign lands (Japan included and specifically) do not mistaken racism with religious hatred.
Funny how narrow minded people turn a song about someones upbringing into a racial dispute.Since the US has the least tolerance of any other country, please don't try to bring everyone else down to your level. It just adds to your "intolerance"
Always been a John Gorka fan. He is brilliant.
John Gorka was the first musician I saw in concert, I have loved the guitar ever since.
The lyrics really say a lot! Great song John.
I love this! Being a long time John Gorka fan & still amazed by his talents.
Thank you Peggy for this link. I'd never heard of this man and I am so glad to have heard of him now! AWESOME song. Praise Him.

You say it and sing it so well, and beautifully.
Such nice tone and resonance!!!

John is playing a Martin OOO28, I would guess from before the early 1960s.

Yes!
The morning after the election, I woke up needing to hear this song.
Yeah I remember how Clinton just had to not fuck it up n the rust belt and told a bunch of poor white people to be mindful of their privilege lmao. Enjoy trump. You deserve it.
No one deserves Trump. He is ripping off his cult and they love it. Kool aid drinkers don't get it.
love it bro :D
Nice one John ! :)

Very nice. :-)
Jackie Pollaro Bill Carangelo loved this concert.
I think that I seen him in Ohio. I was all hopped up on Cold medicine at the time. He was really good live.
I agree!
Grew up in a house without running water. Cut firewood to sell. Worked on freight docks as soon as I was old enough. Haven't found the privilege yet.

yes but at least we know where the real good music is
Sorry: a correction to my own Comment! I think John's guitar is actually a Martin OM 28-VR reissue. Try a YT search on the Model.

How many capos do he need?
@Lawrence- really? The least tolerant of any other country? Have you traveled to any of a number of middle-Eastern countries recently?
