  • As they're about to turn 50, and wanting to adopt a more healthy lifestyle, Josée and Michel decide to plant a vegetable garden outside their home in the suburbs of Drummondville, Quebec. Their backyard had little sun exposure, so they decide to set up the garden in the front yard. Once the garden beds are in place and the vegetables have started growing, the city asks them to remove their garden to put lawn back, but the couple decides to fight.

    They both have full time jobs, didn’t know how to garden and had to fight the city, now they are growing 80% of their produce ? Such an inspiration !

    Incredible that government feels they have the right to dictate what you have in your own front lawn. It is mind blowing.
    As a person who has become passionate about vegetable gardens the past few years - I applaud this couple for fighting for their right to grow their own food on their own land. Their space is gorgeous!

      Some people are boring, dull and you name it and they'd rather have boring ugly lawns than a front yard garden. And now, there's another hoax inflation and global market manipulation by the few rich so they can amass more profit from food consumption businesses... And that's why we have to outsmart them by learning to grow our own foods so we don't have to be at the mercy of market manipulation...

    Yes his couple have been able to enjoy their garden. They are able to get all the vegetables they need and save money on it. They know where their food comes from and know it’s safe and the way they want.They also have a nice front garden view. It’s neat and organized and look beautiful.

Though it is the middle of the night here in Ireland, I have just measured my front garden and am about to draw plans for my own productive space.

    It amazes me that one can have a home and pay a mortgage, yet have someone tell you that you MUST have a lawn. This frustrates me to the core. People have had gardens for ages, while the obsession with flat boring lawns is quite a new phenomenon. I'm so glad this couple was able to keep their beautiful garden.

      Some places, u can't even landscape or pave it over without consulting a thick manual or rules. I don't think i'd want to live in such a neighbourhood.

    • @Moss_piglets
      @Moss_piglets 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      theuglykwan I live in NYC and it's not a problem here. Urban farming is huge here. People now have coops and bee hives! But it's definitely a problem in residential neighborhoods outside the city. I find it very strange that people would rather have a useless lawn than fill it with edibles that can save them hundreds and even make them healthier.

    • @Rinsuki
      @Rinsuki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Because they are lazy...and busy bodies. I don't get why people rather cut grass every week and water the lawn when they could invest in their own backyard orchard. Imagine how many fruit trees you can buy with the cost of one iphone. People are so out of touch that they rather import food from across the globe and pay with their health. Gardening takes initial effort, resources, and knowledge.

    • @Moss_piglets
      @Moss_piglets 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Rinsuki I guess people like their manicured lawns. Although, it would be great if cities can plant fruit trees on the streets or berries. We have giant london planes here in nyc that are quite useless. The parks dept. had a program called Million trees and gave out tons of trees but most aren't that useful just for cosmetics. If I could I would litter the sidewalks with edibles but I'm sure some douchebag will complain.

    • @Rinsuki
      @Rinsuki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes they will. I see so much wasted space purely for looks and it isn't helping native insect life. I'm sure someone will sue if their child or pet decides to munch on some herbs from your yard. I see people in my neighborhood bask in the sun for hours but beyond cutting the grass many don't care for gardening but they will ask for some produce. There's no reason people water their lawns or clean their decks or side walks wasting gallons of water but when it comes to watering their plants they forget...go figure

    I happened to come across this 'front lawn project' in my neighbourhood some years ago and am very glad to see people all over the world are making this happen. Personally I think a vegetable garden is an enrichment of not only your life, but also the estate itself. Those who say all front lawns should be grass-filled, useless aestheticae should open their minds to this idea. Who wouldn't want to be able to use all of their garden space to the fullest?

      They should make a bye-law against the soul destroying, narcissistic, sick, individuals that would make a complaint about a neat, well cared for & beautiful, neighbourhood enhancing garden like that. The day someone has a front garden full of rat infested, rusting scrap metal, or has dumped a load of manure close to your bedroom window, or lets their blackberries start overgrowing your fence, then you can complain, till then, if you don't like it, well, you just look the other way. Its not affecting your life. If you don't like someone elses taste in garden design, just be polite & look in the other direction.

      Are you serious that american home owners in suburbs and urban areas can own roosters and their neighbours are without recourse? That seems so unlikely to me as I have visited various american friends and suggested they do this and that to landscape and even very reasonable things were banned by local guidelines.
      I'm not sure if in Scotland the weather and often tiny gardens prevent us from doing much but it seems like some localities in the US had a group of busybodies legislate almost every eventuality into law with rather specific guidelines.
      Having kept chickens myself, I have to say if my neighbour got a rooster I'd complain. Hens would be no problem. I've kept them myself although you weren't supposed to and my neighbours didn't care. The fox kept sniffing around even a couple of years after I had eaten them!

    • @gratituderanch9406
      @gratituderanch9406 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      theuglykwan it depends. Some areas have an HOA (Home owners Association) and they often have much stricter guidelines for what's allowed or not.
      Roosters do make hens lay more, but they aren't necessary and can fertilize eggs, which can be undesirable.
      The USA is very large, and differs widely from East coast to West coast, from Canadian border and Mexican Border. People are often surprised how different the culture as well as the climate can be. If you don't like it, just try a different area. Even suburbs vs rural in the same state can be quite different culture and norms.

    just simply an amazing story. people are sick and dying from bad diets, lack of exercise, lack of sunshine, lack of purpose, etc. Here, someone complained NOT just because of the garden, but because this couple dared to take back their power and their health. there was a time when having land meant feeding our family. somewhere it turned into an atrocity of aesthetic lawns that need to be mowed every few weeks and lawns that produce zero food. as a young girl growing up in Miami, we had a giant avocado tree, an enornmous mango tree, and a cherry bush that ran the entire length of the backyard and all produced so much amazing fruit that I rarely enjoyed our mother's cooking! and, yes, it had a impact on my entire life creating a healthy palate for life. i turned Vegan at 17 and 42 years later I am still Vegan and I have never had surgery, a pill or ANY medication of any type, or any major illness. land is for survival and not just aesthetics. whoever complained is a hater and a slave to a world that only cares about profiting on our ill health. people often hate courage and outliers. I say BRAVO to this couple for not only their garden, but caring about everyone enough to get involved.

    I did my front yard in garden here in Tampa last year.
    Before I even started I got it in writing that it was legal to do it from the city code
    enforcement.
    Neighbors complain.
    I had a security camera on my property some even come over and destroyed my garden. I file charges against them. One had a felony record on probation so he went back to prison.
    The other one now had a criminal record went to the county commissioner to try to get it outlawed
    I went to meeting and they about passed it and said they would table it until the next meeting.
    No body had ran against the county commissioner in 2 terms. I told him that I knew that he was running again that I will run against him.. I was retired and had a lot of free time. I told him that I did not need the $50,000 a year salary that he was getting that I was going to donate it to Veterans if I ran and use that while running.
    He backed out at that point because it was going to cost him money to run.
    I did run. lost but not by much... Plan on doing it again next time.

    It's sad because I'm fighting the HOA in my community.... We can't have ANY form of vegetable garden whatsoever. (I'm doing it anyway to look like landscaping) My argument is why do they think they have the right to control what I eat? And why do they nurture a yard of consumption and not a yard of production? I understand if it's messy looking, but I have seen some absolutely gorgeous gardens (like in this vid) I'm just beside myself.... :-(

      KallieBunny Wow really? How come you can't have a vegetable garden? Surely that has to be illegal or against human rights in some way? I'm sure whatever you grow turns out amazing and bountiful, more power to you!

      KallieBunny if you signed the HOA agreement then they can legally take you to civil court to get you to do what they want. What you should do is get an up-to-date HOA manual of the one you signed and then use that to bug the shot out of them

    Beautiful garden. I make my own front yard garden too leaving the backyard for fruit trees. That feeling of satisfaction when you pick your own produce is so fulfilling I cannot describe it. I stay away from local supermarkets that sell everything with pesticides and chemicals. However, when you start planting yummy vegetables all kinds of pests will come, some I have never seen in my life before. One day I counted like 20 over types of pests attacking my plants. So have to take the measure to make organic spray. Just lots of hard work and time and money too.
