  • 6 window Town sedan. Here I give an overview explaining why I bought this car, the things that are good and those that need fixing.
Although there are plenty of TH-cam videos on how to fix cars, there aren't that many on these cars so I will be making more as I do various jobs. So far we have:
Pressure bleeding the brakes including making a circular adapter for the reservoir.
Conversion of rear lights to European spec with yellow turn indicators.
    To come in the future:
Fitting a disc brake front conversion kit.
    How to fit new windscreen.
Feel free to criticise what I do in a constructive way. If you have a better way of doing something, ideally post your own video or send me a link to an existing one.

I have the exact year of New Yorker. My grandfather bought it brand new, a few years later my mum had it then it was the car I drove in high school. I used to live blowing away the Camaros and trans ams. Lol. I have since then rebuild the engine, bored .030 over, 68 charger cam, etc. take it out on Sunday’s for church. Of course I’m still a gear head and if some young buck is running down the freeway… I do feel obligated to show them what old school can do. I hope you love yours as much as I do mine. Good day to you sir.

Your 1965 6 window Town sedan reminds me of our beige (exterior and interior) New Yorker including the clear taillight lenses, A/C, power windows. We had it in the Washington DC (USA) area until 1977 time frame and had over 150,000 on the motor before we gave it to my in-laws. Best wishes to you and your '65!

Beautiful car, especially the 6 window version. The headlamp glass covers are a neat feature that i believe only appeared on the 1965 models.

Beautiful car! You made an excellent choice. I love the tail lights, and dashboard of these cars. Yeah. These are thirsty cars, but on long trips they do surprisingly well! Not much difference between these old cars and today's Escolades, etc.

To be honest, these days cars like this do not do many miles per year so the low mpg is not really a problem. It's more about the whole experience of driving such a thing. Here in the UK people seem to mainly just get out of the way. They cannot believe people ever drove such huge cars.

I must admit I did not realise how rare the 1965 6 window versions seem to be these days.

My first car I ever owned was a 65 New Yorker 2 door. It had a 383 ci engine. No power windows, no AC. But it did eventually develop the problem with the electro-mechanical Voltage Regulator. The contacts on the inside of the regulator would get welded together from over arcing due to that short, Iam glad you found it, I never could.

I also did change to a solid state voltage regulator early on. I experienced the electromechanical one on an Autralian Chrysler VE Valiant, the car I cut my teeth on before this one. Also a new ballast resistor!

1965 New Yorkers were not equipped with a 383, only different versions of the 440.

Very nice auto. The most beautiful Chrysler ever built.

That is lovely... my grandmother had a '66 Newport, but the New Yorker 6-window was way better. Chryslers, unlike their GM and Ford counterparts, could manage low- to mid-teens in terms of fuel mileage. Tom McCahill of Popular Mechanix magazine used to buy a new Imperial every year and boasted that he could get 16-17 mpg on the highway.
FYI: The Torqueflite transmission was continued through the late nineties in trucks, with an overdrive gear added.

I'm not sure it is relevant to fuel consumption but I believe they were built lighter around the front end as having chassis mounted torsion springs rather than coils meant that they only then needed to create upper mounts for the shocks rather than having that area take the whole weight of the car which was the case when using coils.

"a load of very dodgy wiring" love that! yes these cars could tow and how, with a big V8 and bullet proof trans many an American has fond memories from childhood of those glorious summer trips with a huge camper in tow behind the family car

    • @XenonJohnD
      @XenonJohnD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It must have been pretty scary towing a huge trailer going down a hill in one of these with single-circuit brakes. The under-dash electro-mechanical adjustment system for the trailer brakes is quite an interesting item too.

@@XenonJohnDelectric trailer brake controllers are still with us. They are usually needed for trailers weighing more than 3000 lbs.
These days, the only vehicles capable of pulling that kind of a load are pick-up trucks and utility vehicles, so you are unlikely to find one in a passenger car.

You have a gem here. The 65 New Yorker with its clear rear taillights was probably the coolest Chrysler of the sixties. A friend of my Dad"s had one, and as a kid of seven years old I still remember it vividly. Where in Auz are you? Lived in Adelaide for a year, I'm from Canada.

Thanks. I live in the UK. Have spent all winter getting it ready for this summer. Big fan of Cold War Motors on YT (Canada), he does the occasional MOPAR

I don't see too many of these with the clear taillight lenses these days!

One side was broken when I bought it but I managed to find a clear one on ebay - I won't say how much I had to pay for it though! If it ever breaks again I may experiment with mould making and clear resin.

With the milage and being garage kept could be original interior. Also at least our group of friends with classics we drove the cars. I've done a thousand miles in a month before.

When you talk about gas mileage it reminds me of when i owned a 1970 cadillac coupe deville doing 7 miles per gallon , It had a 7.7 liter engine , the chrysler 440 when run lightly was not too bad really.

That should be adequate then, as Rolls Royce used to say :)

It's not my daily driver....... so fuel consumption pretty irrelevant.
