best passing big man. nuggets win more often when jokic gets 11-16 assists as opposed to 40 pts.
to beat nuggets, you have to force jokic to be the primary scorer.
he will shoot 16 of 23, but that wouldn't win the game if the others are 3 of 11 or 5 of 15 with joke having 4 assists.

He is committed to always getting better, and he comes from a place where the style of basketball increases reversals and an increase in just playing the game the right way taking only what it gives you. He us willing to ALWAYS make the right play no matter what his stats look like. He just cares about winning. It's hard to guard or beat a guy like that. Plus he's lost a lot of weight but he'd still a tall thick big man who can literally wear you out by leaning on ya. He's just unguardable no matter what you throw at him now.

It's Jokic basketball IQ that makes him unstoppable. James Worthy said he'd rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird because he only had to react against MJ and had to think as well as react when guarding Bird. Here's the scary part... Jokic consistently is among the league leaders in touches but ranks middle region in usage and turnover s. This shows that he reads and reacts more quickly and decisively than anyone currently in the NBA, with relatively a fraction of the turnovers you'd expect from the epicenter of the Nuggets offense.

If the NBA put all the players back into a draft pool tomorrow, there's not a coach in the league that wouldn't draft Jokic first. He is the ultimate cornerstone around which to build. He is smarter than the coaches because he can actually think about AND execute the play to perfection. Coaches just draw it up. Jokic is an enigma that will be written about for decades. His dominance is undeniable and his style is all his own. But, going forward, every big man coming up through the ranks will be forced to watch hours and hours of Jokic so they can do just half of what he does. He is redefining his position while being the most dominant force in the league. That alone puts him in the Top 20 players of all time. But he will not finish there. Once he has multiple championships under his belt, his greatness will be too much to deny. He has a legitimate shot at being the GOAT!

Jokic plays for Denver a small market, not much $ or population watching them so media panders to covering big markets and their stars: LA, Dallas, Philly, etc. His style is simple (yet deadly) so not flashy for posterizing and more publicity. His attitude and personal style is also simple, workmanlike- cares about home, family, horses etc. doesn't hype the NBA and being a star over team play and wins. So is low key, not 'Star' qualities the media likes to cover. Also he's Serbian, Americans tend to be 'ethnocentric', not so ecstatic about 'foreigners'. Lack of media coverage supports that attitude.

    • @davidcaspian
      @davidcaspian 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Denver isn’t really small market. They are medium, approaching big, because a lot of the Mountain West doesn’t have a solid team to back. I think it’s definitely more due to Jokic’s style. A guy like Kyrie gets so much attention simply because he is flashy and immensely talented, but he isn’t as ruthlessly efficient as Joker. He gets the ball and maybe doesn’t move much, but makes a pass or absorbs pressure and finds a man open for an easy bucket. If your team is behind it becomes impossible to catch the Nuggets and the frustration builds and affects play.
Jokic is really a new type of player who is changing how teams are formatted, and the commentary is locked into a style of play that began to fade years ago. Jokic is the future, for big men at the very least. So, tl;dr, I don’t think it’s the market really; the commentators like watching a certain type of player (Durant) and that player will always get attention no matter what size market they are in (OKC). I bet Anthony Edwards is next in this category, and while Minnesota is probably the biggest medium market team, they aren’t considered a big market team.

To try to answer your question "why is Jokic so hard to guard":
IMO - it's because he's the most complete basketball player skills-wise and has the highest bb IQ in the league. Pair that with him being completely team oriented and only focused on wining - and you get the uber-efficient offensive machine.
It's a cliche I know - but Jokic does make everyone better and not just that he creates opportunities - he forces you to be better. There's no other way to play next to him. It's contagious and directional.
He MAKES you play better basketball.
His sheer PRESENCE on the court sets the tone and focuses the team. He recently had a triple-single... completely unusual for him - but he orchestrated the whole offense and the team blew-out the opponent.
The number of passes, assists, hokey-assists in that game is just stunning. The way he was screening, blitzing and setting up plays was just brilliant. He just made the team play the perfect team-ball and that's unstoppable.
The confidence and identity (the way team plays, attitude, decisions) he instills in his team mates is unique in this league.
    I hope this helps explain.
Also - it does explain the other question "why is media silent" - there's no wasted time or effort on "flashy" things. It's all about efficiency. Getting the job done. Winning.
Media is all about creating and milking "brands" - and they're lazy at that. "Give me a tomahawk, or a poster, or a logo shot, aggressive block so i can run a highlight and create clicks easy... don't give me anything cerebral that I can't easily sell and sometimes can't even understand" - and Jokic does exactly opposite. Media, the way it is - with the talent they have, cannot but quietly dislike him.
It's a combination of laziness, inability to see/understand, and in many cases - sheer envy. Not to mention the quiet racism, xenophobia and primitive turf-protection.

I think you're pulling on the right loose thread when you say Jokic doesn't feature all the high-flying dunks or flashy step-backs. To me, it has a lot to do with his physique and the technique in how he handles the ball when shooting or passing.
So often, players are praised for looking the part of a star before they've proven themselves to be effective. Like, Deandre Ayton is such a large and chiseled muscle man that of course he'd be drafted over the Slovenian who's already proven more and plays at a more valuable position. Or look at all the players about whom scouts have gushed, "what a pretty shot" -- like Ben McLemore -- even though their shots never seem to go down.
Jokic, in contrast, still looks like he's lumbering and out of shape even though he's clearly moving at just as high a gear as the other big men. His passes and shots often look more like he's flipping the ball around, or even playing water polo, than like he ever did a skills drill at hoops camp. And because he doesn't look the part, all these basketball commentators just don't seem to process the fact of how effective he is. It's like their brains break when they look at him, so they go back to praising the players they can comprehend. Add to that his apparent aversion for the spotlight, so that he's not exactly going out there and demanding R-E-S-P-E-C-T, and it's easy for them to skip over him. I don't think it's an active disrespect or a calculated decision to ignore Denver's small market; it's just that they've got nothing to say when their minds skip a groove like that.
To me, what really shows his value is that, in addition to all those personal stats, he's the player you'll see who, after a whistle or even in the middle of a play, is telling his teammates where to go. All too few players have such command, both in the sense of authority and of having a handle on the situation, that they can direct professional athletes through the right set without ever coming off as bossy. Because it's not about doing things his way, it's about getting the whole team in place.

@Eastunder ESPNs coverage is horrible top to bottom ... I get excited go watch a game on tnt or even nba TV with local announcers ... but espn? Then they have Greenburg and Stephen A on at halftime? I'd rather listening to the sound of cats fighting with raccoons for scraps of food then those two pretending to know something about sports.

I'm a Jokic fan and watch all Denver games.
Jokic's December numbers show a large drop compared to November:
22.2 pts compared to 29.7 in November, 10.9 reb compared to 13.4 in November, 50% fg% compared to 55% in December.
IMO he is not the MVP favorite as of now, Embiid, Giannis and Luka are ahead of him.

I really don't understand this obsession with MVP and statistics. Wouldn't it be nice if it wasn't talked about during the season, and when the season is over, to decide who is the MVP. Wouldn't it be nicer to discuss the game itself and everything that makes the game beautiful..
