I'm so familiar with all these songs. When I was a kid in the sixties, I used to sing them to myself all the time! But I have never heard them performed by The Carpenters before! This performance was nothing short of spectacular! You two have done such a wonderful thing by sharing it with us tonight. 💖💖💖

African American singer Dionne Warwick sang most of these, many were big hits. She was buddies with Karen and Richard...they were on the same record label, A & M records. And buddies with Burt Bacharach and Hal David who often wrote songs for A & M.

I always enjoy the look on these young vets faces as they watch this beautiful young 19 year old woman with an ANGELIC voice, PLAY THE DRUMS, AND SING, AT THE SAME TIME! Very unique at the time. Tip of the hat to Karen and Richard! Extremely talented sibling duo. RIP KAREN.

Karen looked the part of the girl next door to all back then, and also sang that way, just phenomenal. Brother Richard was impossibly a musical genius...but he loved his sister and her talent too.

@@thomastimlin1724 So true. Richards extreme talents were often overlooked by Karen's beauty and ANGELIC voice. Wish Karen could have been my girl next door!

Karen started playing drums in the high school marching band, Downey High School, Downey CA. She played drums with her brothers (Richard) group a jazz trio and they won a battle of the bands in 1969. Then formed The Carpenters in 1970 and released their first album in 1970, Close to You. She preferred to continue to play drums but producers, managers, etc preferred she was in front of the band and just sing.

Voice of an angel....one of a kind. RIP Karen. This was when you had to be real musicians....to be able to sing an play live without any gimmicks or electronic crutches. No Autotune, no signing to a track, just pure raw talent.

Karen was only about 20 here, my God! Proves that Karen was a bad ass on drums and singing at the same time. She could play the crap out of the drums. She was really a jazz drummer. These harmonies by the Carpenters and the band are extremely tight and great! BTW that was Ed Sullivan announcing at the beginning, but us baby boomers MUST tell you, NEVER EVER rely on Ed Sullivan for a correct pronunciation...he screwed up everything HAHAHAHAHA

The soldiers sitting down, were ALL WOUNDED VETERANS coming back from Vietnam. I'm sure if they could, they would have been jumping up and down, if they were fully recovered from their combat wounds.

Hi Shawn and Mel! A little background on The Medley. It was live to tape on The Ed Sullivan Show 11/8/70. A Veteran’s Day special. It was filmed live to tape at Walter Reed Hospital in D.C. in front of Viet Nam era vets and patients. They were probably expecting The Doors! The Carpenters were just off their Close To You hit that summer so, just getting started.
I spotted something on the freeze frame your monitor sat on for a while. The lower left was Tori Holub and her video of her first live performance! So you had a subliminal hint happening! You know why? Who was the ONLY PERSON IN 53 YEARS to accurately cover The Bacharach/David Medley? How about Tori Holub!! Last October Tori, after covering a small piece of the Medley as a Short video, was challenged to cover the ENTIRE Medley! She accepted the challenge and did it. Now she did not play drums. So instead she self produced The Medley singing ALL THE VOCALS including Richards parts. Edited, mixed, everything. For music she used a Richard Carpenter produced Karaoke track for the Japanese market. It was at the correct tempo. That happened last October right after TH-cam introduced me to her.
This past February, Jim Wilkas saw the Medley video and thought it needed “More Richard.” So he added himself doing the harmonies and showed the resulting video to Tori. She loved it, he released it and a collaboration was born. We’ve Only Just Begun was the first result! You saw that and were duly blown away!
Now you know the rest of the story.
    Joe
