    I like how this is actually reality. Not one of those learn in 30 days and is a professional. So many people have probably picked up an instrument excited to become a master quickly and get depressed and turned away with how hard it really is. Well done! (Also the imovie edits are amazing)

    I love the idea of practicing in a barn, serenading the farm animals and such. Hard work always pays off, if you're willing to sacrifice. I can't wait to hear you a year from now. In real life, luck and talent minimally affects your life and has little to do with just about everything. Go girl!!!!!

    • @MeghanBowman

      I totally agree - "luck and talent minimally affects your life"... life is about hard work! Thanks for the encouragement :)

    I bought a cello with the intent of teaching myself. The first time I tried running the bow across the strings my Doberman began howling the most mournful howl I ever heard. I don’t know if he was trying to accompany me or being critical. Odds are he was being critical... Darlington, South Carolina

      Hi William, thank you for sharing! I have had this happen also to me. Your sweet pup was probably wanting to 'sing' as you played. At least that's what I was hoping with my own dogs. Be well.

    Very inspiring! I played the clarinet from ages 10 to 16, played in school "concert bands" and "orchestras", etc, but quit in high school because I no longer liked the instrument. I've always admired the cello, and at age 45 I've been considering buying a bargain one to attempt to learn how to play it. Thank you for your extremely inspiring video! And good job!! If that's just 30 days of progress, you clearly have talent!! Practicing in the steel grain bin is a brilliant added touch, and letting us hear that gnarly weather hitting the steel grain bin was amazing.

      Hi! Thanks so much! The cello that I am playing in this video is a "cecilio". I bought it for under $500 online. I think it's one of the cheapest cellos you can buy. It is quite poorly made, but I bought new strings for it (the strings that came with it were horrible) and it has been a great cello to learn on. Learning the cello (as an adult) has been well worth the investment, both financially and time wise. I hope you do decide to pursue it! Let me know how it goes :)

    • @MeghanBowman
      @MeghanBowman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's $500 Canadian I should mention :)

    • @christinadarling23

      I'm curious about strings. I also just bought a Cecilio, and I'm wondering if I should upgrade the strings. I still have a spare set, but I'm looking at the D'Addario Preludes as replacements for a beginner.

    Great video. I wish I had such a great sounding reverb chamber. The hail is a nice touch, but doesn't make a very good metronome. ;)

      There is a trick I use to get good reverb. On my recordings I just record it normal and then add reverb effect in audacity. Be sure not to add to much though because it will be obvious that you are tweaking the sound and overdoing it. Plus it will sound horrible. Check out my recordings.

    • @mymindandbeatingheart
      @mymindandbeatingheart 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing I see wrong with you besides that you are a beginner is that you should take better care of your cello. The wood on your cello is very sensetive to temperature. Too cold and it can crack. Too hot can be damaging too. Keep it at room temperature and indoors as much as possible. Also use a humidifier to keep it from getting to dry. Dryness can cause your cello to crack. Other than that I congratulate you that much progress in 30 days is phenomemal. Your sound is very smooth and rich quality.

    • @MeghanBowman
      @MeghanBowman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks Jason! Yes, I play piano and guitar as well. I am around your age and have been playing the cello for about 5 months now. It's probably the most difficult instrument I have ever studied - but I believe learning an instrument is worth every minute you spend with it. And the cello is definitely worth picking up again! Do you play any other instruments?

    ok so try buying string basics books 1,2, and 3 and look at videos it helps a lot and your hand on the finger board should be like grabing a water bottle "soda can hand" so your elbow should be up and not hiding behind the cello and remember practice makes the master 😄

    I love this. I just bought one and it arrived last night. I'm going to file the bridge in more of an arc so I won't hit all the strings at once, then hopefully learn a song. I thought cello would be the natural thing to go to along with violin. Thank you for posting this. Hope you have more coming.

      @MeghanBowman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Aw that sounds so nice and it's so inspiring! I play ukulele, piano (though I have trouble with treble clef so I can't really read the music), guitar, and trombone is my primary instrument. My music teacher suggested I learn cello because the range is so close to trombone for a string instrument, so he'll lend me one and I'm watching videos for motivation haha :)

    • @haleymarie9618
      @haleymarie9618 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meghan Bowman thank you! Also I have a question I was wondering if you could answer, I have heard it is really difficult to self teach because people can accidentally develop bad habits without noticing, especially with an instrument like cello but I don't think I will be able to get a teacher, what's your experience with being self-taught?

    • @MeghanBowman
      @MeghanBowman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi again Haley, I actually do study with a teacher. I know some people who are self taught but I think the process of learning is a lot slower, and it is very possible to learn bad habits that you may have to unlearn later when self-taught. You could definitely try to self teach - there are a lot of good videos here on youtube you could use. But I love having a teacher and would recommend learning that way! I know it is difficult to find a teacher though. I drive two hours every week to see my teacher. Are you learning the cello for school band? Does your music teacher (who will lend you a cello) play the cello?

    • @haleymarie9618
      @haleymarie9618 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meghan Bowman it isn't for band, but my school does have an orchestra (I'm not in it though). I know people at my school who play cello, but my music teacher doesn't. For me it would mostly be the expense that would make it difficult to do lessons 😣 but I was probably going to ask my teacher if he knew anyone who I could do lessons with, or maybe I could talk to some of the students and see if they'd be able to give me some lessons either for free or for a good price :) I agree though, I feel like I always learn things better with a teacher!

    • @MeghanBowman
      @MeghanBowman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand the expense being a problem :(
      Good luck with everything! I hope you find a beautiful cello and a reasonably priced teacher to help you out. And if not, go with the youtube video tutorials :)

    yikes the wolf note on the d-string e was very noticeable. A simple wolf note eliminator should be able to fix that. Doesnt take that long to set up either

    Hi Meghan, I've had great fun watching your video! I have a cello, I've had it as a present and have the aim of learning to play it, at a basic level, in a year, 'cause I haven't much time to dedicate to it. Your video is so inspiring! Thank you. p.s. what's the title and singer of the song in the background? EDIT: is that YOU?????? WOW!!!!!!

      Hi. Thank you for your comment. Good luck to you in your cello practice! Yes, the song in the background is me. I am a musician from Canada and write and record music. The two songs on the video are called 99 cents and O My Heart. You can find them on Spotify and iTunes. Cheers!

    Meghan, this is awesomeness indeed! Great job on the French Folk song. Are you taking lessons with a teacher? I hope you will continue to practice and share your cello progress. We could all use a little motivation from each other. Looking forward to your next progression!

      Hey thank you Alex! Yes, I was taking lessons with a teacher (I'm on a little break right now). I saw some of your videos - good work to you too! Are you taking from a teacher?

    • @alexmonticello
      @alexmonticello 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I've been taking weekly lessons. I'm learning through the Suzuki book, that's why I recognized the French Folk song. Are you using the same book?

    • @talhaacar2342

      Meghan Bowman it’s a double edged sword. I hate it as much as I love it. Are you going to practice cello like as a main instrument or was this just an experiment?

    • @talhaacar2342
      @talhaacar2342 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or rather have you been playing it for a while now ? I now realize this video is two years old

    • @MeghanBowman
      @MeghanBowman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like the cello has been the same (double edged sword) - it's incredibly rewarding and also incredibly frustrating sometimes. Yes, I have been playing for two years and play semi-professionally now, occasionally getting paid for gigs. I am continuing to practice and take lessons... it's a long process to learn a stringed instrument well I am learning. Cheers!

    • @MeghanBowman

      Thanks! I'm not sure about the squeaking. The cello I play in this video and the 10 month video are two different cellos - I'm not sure if that could be it? I still squeak sometimes when I play difficult songs :)

    • @MrGreencheetah
      @MrGreencheetah 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've played various other instruments, but never a "string" instrument that requires a bow - the cello, as you know, is not an "easy" instrument, but knowing that, I am enjoying putting the various pieces together to be able to play. You may know of the famous cellist Pablo Casals. Even when he was world-famous someone heard him practicing scales very very slowly - later he asked Casals, why he would be practicing scales so slowly; he responded "I always practice as if I will live forever." ... I like that! Also like your dog and cat!!!
